Buggin': Taps for Justice
An examination of the history of wiretapping in American politics during Andy Warhol's life. Warhol painted portraits of Justice Louis Brandeis, who in 1928 was the first Supreme Court Justice to write an opinion opposing wire tapping (Olmsted v. United States). His opinion was, however, instrumental in determining another legal case in 1967 (known as Katz), which overturned the Olmsted decision. Warhol also made a portrait of Richard Nixon, shortly before his presidency was ended due to the Watergate scandal, much of which hinged on Nixon's personal recording of his conversations and phone calls - some of which are included in the show. Now, as our nation once again debates the legality of wiretapping and electronic eavesdropping, this exhibition examines some of the milestones of legal precedence, and the public discourse surrounding them. |
