Sound scene: Jeff Mangum, Dessa, SongSpace

Fans of seminal 1990s band Neutral Milk Hotel issued a collective cheer back in early November, when The Warhol announced that the band's vocalist, lyricist and guitarist, Jeff Mangum, would perform solo on January 10th at Oakland's elegant Carnegie Music Hall. A central figure of the highly influential band, who released their now cult classic LP In The Aeroplane Over The Sea in 1998 on Merge Records, Mangum continues to have a profound impact on the underground music scene--even as his live appearances and recorded releases remain rare--and his integral involvement co-founding The Elephant 6 Recording Company (a collective of like-minded musicians forged with close friends and collaborators The Olivia Tremor Control and Apples In Stereo) has had widespread influence on new generations of artists. On Oct. 4th, 2011, Mangum performed songs to protesters participating in Occupy Wall Street in NYC's Zuccotti Park, while in 2012, he performed at the Coachella Festival and curated the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in Minehead, UK.
