A central aspect of the museum’s mission is to use its collection to create an understanding of and appreciation for the art and life of Andy Warhol and to re-contextualize Warhol’s work in ways that resonate in contemporary culture. It is in this spirit and with this purpose that commissioned performance and film projects are developed with the intention to tour.
The first project of this sort was 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests, which features a selection of Warhol’s four-minute silent film portraits with commissioned soundtracks by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips, performing as Dean and Britta. As a follow-up, in celebration of the museum’s 20th anniversary, the museum premiered Exposed: Songs for Unseen Warhol Films in the fall of 2014. It is comprised of 15 short Warhol films that were never before publicly exhibited, and it is accompanied by newly commissioned live music by five songwriter/composers, with Dean Wareham as guest music curator.
