SUMMARY:Fit to Print; Fox Movietone Newsreels (1928 - 1942) with Curator Greg Wilsbacher
DESCRIPTION:Greg Wilsbacher\, curator of the Newsfilm Collections at the University of South Carolina – Columbia\, will visit The Warhol to introduce an eclectic program of 35mm Fox Movietone newsreels from headlines past. The Fox Movietone News Collection at USC provides one of the most detailed snapshots of American and global culture in the decades before television. Consisting of over 2\,000 hours of content\, much of which are original camera negative outtakes\, the Collection records deeds great and small\, serious and silly. “Fit to Print” brings an hour of these early sound news stories to Pittsburgh for the first time to be screened in glorious 35mm. All films are 35mm\, black and white\, sound. The Fox Movietone News Collection comprises just a portion of Moving Image Research Collections (known by all its friends as MIRC).  MIRC holds over 6\,000 hours of archival film and video.

SUMMARY:Unseen Treasures from The George Eastman House 2012: Beggars of Life (1928)
DESCRIPTION:Louise Brooks’ penetrating charisma and transcendent naturalness made her an icon of 1920s silent cinema.  In director William Wellman’s early Depression-era portrait of transient life\, she gave one of her absolute strongest performances during her brief stint in the Hollywood\, playing a girl who must go on the run after killing her abusive stepfather in self-defense. Fleeing\, she meets the handsome drifter Richard Arlen and the two hit the road\, one step ahead of the law and soon encounter Oklahoma Red (Wallace Beery)\, a tough\, high-spirited hobo. Together they ride the rails\, with Brooks dressed as a boy\, through a hobo underworld where danger is always close at hand. This empathetic\, darkly realistic drama is loaded with stunning visuals and is one of the great late silent-era features.  The Warhol Museum continues its partnership with the world-renowned photograph and motion picture archives\, George Eastman House\, to bring rarely shown silent and early sound masterpieces from its extensive collection exclusively to Pittsburgh.

SUMMARY:Unseen Treasures from The George Eastman House 2012: Stage Struck (1925)
DESCRIPTION:Stage Struck\, directed by Allan Dwan and starring Gloria Swanson\, Lawrence Gray\, and Gertrude Astor\, was partially shot in nearby New Martinsville\, West Virginia\, where Swanson plays a small-town waitress determined to keep the interest of her boyfriend Gray by becoming a real actress. With her huge eyes\, seductive smile\, and unparalleled ambition\, Swanson defined the word “star” for generations of fans. She doesn’t disappoint – from the opening two-strip Technicolor sequence parodying Salome to the wild boxing match finale\, the star shines in this charming comedy which features all of her trademark trappings including elaborate dream sequences\, elegant sets\, and of course\, the famous Swanson wardrobe. SUMMARY:Community Action Center (2010) with Directors A.K. Burns and A.L Steiner In Person
DESCRIPTION:Community Action Center incorporates the erotics of a community where the personal is not only political\, but sexual.  This project was heavily inspired by 1970’s porn-romance-liberation films which served as distinct portraits of the urban inhabitants\, landscapes and the body politic of a particular time and place.  Community Action Center is a unique contemporary womyn-centric composition that serves as both an ode and a hole-filler.  Sex\, sexuality and the complexities of gendered bodies are inherently political.  This project is a small archive of an intergenerational community built on collaboration\, friendship\, sex and art.  The work attempts to explore a consideration of feminist fashion\, sexual aesthetics and an expansive view of what is defined as ‘sex’.  Directors Burns and Steiner worked with artists and performers who created infinitely complex gender and performance roles that are both real and fantastical\, set to a soundtrack of music culled from the worldwide sisterhood.  The artists have created a reason to reflect on the cultural realness of homo-grown lesbian sexuality\, and the work aims to be a hedonistic and distinctly political adventure.

DESCRIPTION:Canadian bad boy Bruce LaBruce is back with a hyper-sexual analysis of contemporary gay culture with L.A. Zombie\, featuring Francois Sagat\, Rocco Giovanni\, Wolf Hudson\, Eddie Diaz\, and Andrew James.  The film follows an alien zombie creature as he emerges from the sea and attempts to make sense of his new home\, Los Angeles.  After getting picked up by a surfer in a truck\, a severe accident occurs that results in the surfer lying dead in the middle of the road.  The alien zombie has sex with the dead man and brings him back to life.  Wandering away from the accident\, he finds himself among L.A.’s homeless population where it becomes increasingly unclear whether he really is an alien zombie or a schizophrenic suffering from delusions.  Like a kind of dark savior\, the alien zombie proceeds to find various dead men in the greater Los Angeles area and bring them back to life.  Part porn; part horror; part art film; part critique of superficiality in the gay world; all Bruce LaBruce!

SUMMARY:Swoon (1992) with Special Guest Tom Kalin\, Director
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and the Center for the Arts in Society at Carnegie Mellon University are pleased to welcome New York based filmmaker\, writer\, producer and activist Tom Kalin to introduce and discuss his 1992 feature Swoon in celebration of the film’s twenty-year anniversary.  The film\, along with Todd Haynes’ Poison and Gregg Araki’s The Living End\, heralded what came to be known as the New Queer Cinema.  It is the third cinematic retelling of the famous Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb child murder case of 1924 in which the two lovers kidnapped and killed a 14-year old boy just to see if they could commit the perfect crime. Kalin focuses on the portrayal of gay sexuality and has done a significant work in changing the public opinion of AIDS\, while simultaneously expanding the definition of activist video.

DESCRIPTION:In 2009 Madelyn Roehrig started filming people at Andy Warhol’s gravesite.  So far\, more than 200 individuals have been videotaped.  They are passionate\, contentious\, funny\, or sincere\, with a blend of whimsy and wisdom. \nEntrance music provided by Meeting of Important People with Josh Verbanets and Matt Miller. Intermission music provided by Uke & Tuba. Dave Olson will play the bagpipes during the ending montage. \n“Andy once said\, “I always thought I’d like my own tombstone to be blank. No epitaph and no name.  Well\, actually\, I’d like it to say “figment.”  He never got his wish.  But in my project Figments\, Andy becomes a real figment of many people’s imaginations\, as they talk with the artist about their feelings\, hopes\, desires and whimsies.  Many of the conversations and behavior at Andy’s grave echo the Pop artist’s own often sounding innocent\, simplistic statements\, many of which\, with time\, actually turned out to be prophetic and wise.” – Madelyn Roehrig. \nFigments: Conversation with Andy\, Madelyn Roehrig’s ongoing project\, is now in its third year. DESCRIPTION:Unseen Treasures from the George Eastman House \nThe Andy Warhol Museum continues its partnership with the world-renowned photograph and motion picture archives\, The George Eastman House\, to bring rarely shown silent and early sound masterpieces from its extensive collection exclusively to Pittsburgh. \nJazzmania (1923) Directed by Robert Z. Leonard. \nNewly restored\, 35mm archival print\, color-tinted\, 58 min.\, silent\, with live musical accompaniment composed and performed by Ben Opie. \nStarring Mae Murray\, Rod La Rocque\, Edmund Burns\, Jean Hersholt\, Lionel Belmore\, Herbert Standing\, Edith Bostwick\, Wilfred Lucas\, J.Herbert Frank\, Carl Harbaugh\, Harry Northrup. \nThis film\, restored in 2010 by George Eastman House was unseen for over 85 years and considered lost\, until a sole surviving nitrate print was discovered in Italy the late 1990s in a private collection. Now audiences can enjoy one of the precious few remaining films of actress Mae Murray and her “bee-stung lips” at the peak of her career as the charming Queen who would rather dance than rule. With art deco set decoration by Cedric Gibbons. \nThis jazz-age comedy-drama is set in the mythical European kingdom of Jazzmania\, where Queen Ninon (Mae Murray) reigns.  Unhappy with her intended\, Prince Otto\, who has started a revolution\, she flees to Monte Carlo and New York\, all the while dancing up a storm dressed in the most modern and provocative costumes worn by an actress in film up to that time. On her return\, she saves the day by creating a republic and\, also\, marries her true love. \nThe film will be introduced by Caroline Yeager\, Assistant Curator in the Motion Picture Department at George Eastman House.
