DESCRIPTION:MS 89 is back with a special screening of our 1995 Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant\, co-hosted by Harrison Apple (Pittsburgh Queer History Project) and former contestant Jezebel Bebbington D’Opulence (The Puerto Rican Princess of Pittsburgh). Join us for a once in a life-time community nightclub archives event\, taking place in The Warhol theater\, where the pageant played out almost 30 years ago. \nThe MS 89 series is a live and in-person only nightclub archives screening event. Community members host screenings and discussions of tapes that they had a hand in creating. Pushing back against the tendency to consume archives\, MS 89 packs together to watch and rewatch as a ritual in creating new intergenerational friendships via their shared desire for a shared past. \nThis event is made possible by a generous gift from the Dietrich Humanities Scholars Program\, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry\, and The Andy Warhol Museum. \nAbout Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame \nThe Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant was created by Raina Lampkins-Fielder (former education program coordinator) and Glenn Brown (NYC Ball Scene). With a star studded line-up of contestants and judges from Pittsburgh’s queer nightlife\, Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame tells a lesser known story of cultural meaning making spanning performers\, museum curators\, and after-dark personalities from the Steel City. The documentary footage was captured and edited by filmmaker Roberta Kenney with editing support from filmmaker Chris Ivey\, and produced in the editing bays of the former Pittsburgh Filmmakers. As a result of interviews with members of the House of D’Opulence\, Apple and Kenney connected to reintroduce this footage by donating her source tapes to the Pittsburgh Queer History Project in 2021. \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Future Tense: Microcinema Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of films and conversation with co-curators Barbara London and Ellen Larson.  \nWe are living in a time of crisis. Anxieties about the future and questions concerning the sustainability of the planet and its inhabitants have never felt more urgent. Future Tense asks how artists approach these and other global uncertainties in relationship to identity\, home\, and environment. Selected films highlight both the fragility and resilience of human ingenuity in relationship to nature\, space\, and place. Collectively\, the artists included in this program direct themselves towards the future. They look to the past to reclaim lost histories while simultaneously imagining new possible futures. Participating artists: Imani Dennison\, Fang Tianyu\, Thomas Allen Harris\, Pedro Neves Marques\, Joan Michel\, Su Yu-Hsin\, Wang Mowen\, and Zheng Yuan.  \nBarbara London is a New York-based curator and writer who founded the video-media exhibition and collection programs at The Museum of Modern Art\, where she worked between 1973 and 2013. Her current projects include the book Video/Art: The First Fifty Years (Phaidon: 2020)\, the podcast series Barbara London Calling\, and the exhibition Seeing Sound (Independent Curators International\, 2020-24). London’s writing has appeared in numerous catalogs and publications\, including Artforum\, Yishu\, Leonardo\, Art Asia Pacific\, Art in America\, and Modern Painter. London teaches in the Sound Art Department\, Columbia University\, and previously taught in the Graduate Art Department\, Yale University\, 2014-19. \nEllen Larson is a PhD candidate at the University of Pittsburgh\, focusing her doctoral research on contemporary video art from Asia. Alisha Wormsley\, a Pittsburgh-based artist\, has curated a selection of experimental artist films to celebrate the often-overlooked place of female filmmakers in film history. Inspired by Marisol’s narrative of great acclaim during her lifetime and the subsequent erasure of her place from art history\, Wormsley selected films from six artists\, including Akosua Adoma Owusu\, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz\, Cauleen Smith\, Malakai\, Nan Collymore\, and Kite\, who are making important contributions to reimagining the archive and the advancement of experimental film. The evening includes an introduction from Jessica Beck\, Milton Fine curator of art and organizer of the exhibition\, an introduction to each film by Wormsley and a screening of each film. The night will conclude with music by Pittsburgh-based DJ\, Jessica Fuquay. Registration is required. \nFilms\nDrexciya\nAkosua Adoma Owusu\nSet in an abandoned swimming pool in Accra\, Ghana\, Akosua Adoma Owusu’s Drexciya draws on the myth from the Detroit-based electronic band to create an afrofuturist portrait of an underwater subcontinent populated by the unborn children of African women thrown overboard during the Transatlantic slave trade. The Riviera was once known as Ghana’s first pleasure beach. A one-time extravagant Ambassador Hotel of post- colonial – early Kwame Nkrumah era\, the Riviera Beach Club thrived until the mid-1970’s. The Olympic-sized pool\, now in a dilapidated state\, is used for locals for things other than swimming. \nMarché Salomon\nBeatriz Santiago Muñoz\nTwo young workers at a busy Port-au-Prince open-air market have a conversation about the mystical properties of common objects and whether the divine can inhabit any kind of object—mass-produced bottles\, toxic rivers\, beheaded goats. \nPilgrim\nCauleen Smith\nA live recording of an Alice Coltrane piano performance accompanied by a visual track that documents a pilgrimage across the USA taken by Cauleen Smith\, tracing historic sites of creativity and generosity that were an inspiration to her: Alice Coltrane’s Sai Anantam Ashram; the Watts Towers; and the Watervliet Shaker Historic District. \nSouls\nMalakai\nUnable to deal with her grandmother’s declining mental and physical health\, a young girl uses her cardboard spaceship to escape her reality before the matriarch of her family dies. \nFlâneuse\nNan Collymore\nGrounded in the idea of what Baudelaire described as the “flâneur”—here the shoe is used as a conceit for the true flâneur—the flâneuse—to use as a mode of transport. For those registered\, your current tickets will be honored on the rescheduled date. \nUnderground filmmaker Barbara Rubin’s 1964 art-porn masterpiece Christmas on Earth\, made when she was only 18 years old\, shattered creative and sexist boundaries and shocked NYC’s experimental film scene. Working with Jonas Mekas at the Filmmaker’s Coop\, Rubin was instrumental in creating NYC’s thriving underground film community and a rare female voice in a world of powerful men. A rebellious Zelig of the Sixties\, she introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to the Kabbalah. But beyond shaping the spirit of the Sixties\, Barbara was seeking the deeper meaning of life. After retiring to a farm with Allen Ginsberg\, she shocked everyone by becoming a Hasidic Jew. How and why did one of the 1960’s freest spirits submit to a religious life?  For years\, 94-year-old filmmaker Jonas Mekas has saved all of Barbara’s letters and cherished her memory. Working with Mekas’ footage and rare clips from our archives\, the film takes us inside the world and mind of Barbara Rubin; a woman who truly believed that film could change the world and who then vanished into obscurity. \nPlease note this film contains explicit content and adult subject matter.

DESCRIPTION:For World AIDS Day\, The Warhol and Visual AIDS present a video screening for the thirtieth annual Day With(out) Art. This year’s program\, STILL BEGINNING\, features videos covering broad subject matter from anti-stigma work in New Orleans to public sex culture in Chicago. STILL BEGINNING features new work by Shanti Avirgan\, Nguyen Tan Hoang\, Carl George\, Viva Ruiz\, Iman Shervington\, Jack Waters/Victor F.M. Torres\, and Derrick Woods-Morrow. Visual AIDS is a non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue\, supporting HIV+ artists\, and preserving a legacy\, because AIDS is not over. \nResponding to the exhibition Andy Warhol: Revelation\, artist Jordan Eagles will create Illuminations\, a light installation within the museum galleries. Working with blood donated from members of the LGBTQ+ community\, the artist will project images directly onto Andy Warhol’s paintings in order to address the stigma of HIV\, the FDA’s discriminatory ban on blood donation by gay men\, and the value of human life. Eagles is a New York-based artist who has been exploring the aesthetics and ethics of blood as an artistic medium since the late 1990s. \nThe Allies for Health + Wellbeing will be providing information and services for individuals living with\, or at risk of HIV\, viral hepatitis\, and sexually transmitted infections.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of Raymond Pettibon’s 1989 film\, Sir Drone\, selected by Kim Gordon. Described by Gordon as “epic”\, Sir Drone follows teenagers from the industrial part of Los Angeles as they try to form a punk band in Hollywood. The film features artist Mike Kelley\, bassist Matt Watt\, and even a character named “Goo”. Shot in two days on home-video equipment with dialogue read off cue cards\, Sir Drone is part of a series of feature-length\, low-tech video narratives that Pettibon made in the late 1980s focused on West Coast American radical subjects of the 1960s and 1970s. The screening will feature a personal video introduction from Kim Gordon. SUMMARY:Screening of Making Montgomery Clift with Directors Robert A. Clift and Hillary Demmon
DESCRIPTION:We present the Pittsburgh premiere of the documentary\, Making Montgomery Clift (2018)\, about the accomplished and influential Hollywood actor. Known for bucking traditions on and off screen\, countless biographies have reduced Clift to labels like “tragically self-destructive” and “tormented” because of his queer sexuality. Now\, directors Robert Clift—Montgomery’s nephew—and Hillary Demmon rigorously re-examine these flawed narratives through the eyes of those who knew him. Drawing on interviews with family and loved ones\, as well as a rich collection of unreleased archival materials from both Montgomery and his brother\, Brooks Clift\, this fresh portrait of the actor’s passions\, contributions\, and commitment to living and working in his own way gives one of Hollywood’s underappreciated legends his due. Following the screening\, filmmakers Clift and Demmon will participate in a Q&A. \n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Adam Green’s Aladdin
DESCRIPTION:We welcome musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green for a unique evening featuring a solo acoustic performance of songs from his second feature film Adam Green’s Aladdin\, followed by a full screening of the film. Shot entirely on papier-mache sets designed by Green\, this immersive fantasy film stars an eclectic cast including Macaulay Culkin\, Natasha Lyonne\, Alia Shawkat\, Jack Dishel\, and Francesco Clemente – with Green playing Aladdin. In Green’s take on this classic tale\, the lamp is a 3-D printer\, the Princess is a decadent socialite\, the planet gets a sex-change\, and its population prints out an analogue version of the Internet. Regarding the connectivity between his music\, art and filmmaking\, Green says “If you listen to my songs\, you see they’re kind of cartoonish. I try to make songs like my paintings. When creating my movie\, I approached the script like it was a song.” Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \n \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

At a moment of growing interest in the histories of AIDS activism\, ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS foregrounds contemporary engagements between activists\, artists\, and cultural workers on the front lines.

SUMMARY:The Black Ecstatic: An Evening of Poetry & Film
DESCRIPTION:Three contemporary black poets\, Airea D. Matthews\, Roger Reeves\, and Safiya Sinclair\, and filmmaker Jamal T. Lewis will consider how “the ecstatic” functions in their artistic work and personal lives\, within the context of the contemporary moment\, where attention to black political and social life emphasizes death and unjustifiable violence. The program\, which will include poetry performances\, a brief film screening\, and discussion\, is organized and moderated by Rickey Laurentiis\, the inaugural Fellow in Creative Writing at Center for African American Poetry and Poetics. This program is presented in conjunction with our Devan Shimoyama: Cry\, Baby exhibition\, curated by Jessica Beck\, the Milton Fine curator of art at The Warhol.\n\nFounded in 2016\, Center for African American Poetry (CAAPP) at the University of Pittsburgh is a creative think tank for African American and African diasporic poetries and poetics whose mission is to highlight\, promote\, and share the poetry and poetic work of African American writers. The center’s programming aims to present exciting live poetry and conversation\, contextualize the meaning of that work\, and archive it for future generations\, while also operating as space for innovative collaboration between writers\, scholars\, and other artists thinking through poetics as a unique and contemporary movement. \nRickey Laurentiis was raised in New Orleans\, Louisiana\, and is the author of Boy with Thorn (2015)\, which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize\, the Levis Reading Prize\, and was a finalist for the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. Other honors include fellowships from the Whiting Foundation\, the Lannan Literary Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation\, and the Poetry Foundation. Laurentiis’ poem\, “Visible City\,” opened Notes for Now\, the catalogue for Prospect.3 New Orleans\, curated by Franklin Sirmans. Laurentiis currently lives in Pittsburgh\, and is the inaugural Fellow in Creative Writing at the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics at the University of Pittsburgh. \nJamal T. Lewis\, b. 1990\, is an emerging multidisciplinary artist\, writer\, and documentary filmmaker. Lewis resides in Bedstuy\, Brooklyn\, and hails from Atlanta\, Georgia. Named by Teen Vogue as one of the “coolest queers on the internet\,” Lewis is also known as ‘fatfemme’\, a moniker that encapsulates life at the intersection of fat and femme identity — “spaces that people are afraid to occupy\,” she names. A graduate of Morehouse College and The New School\, Lewis produces work around the body\, specifically exploring and interrogating identity formation\, race\, gender\, sexuality\, desire\, beauty\, and ugliness. Lewis’s work has been featured in LA Times and New York Times. \nAirea D. Matthews’ first collection of poems\, Simulacra\, received the 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award (Yale University Press\, 2017). Her work has appeared in Best American Poets 2015\, American Poets\, Four Way Review\, The Indiana Review\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, and elsewhere. She was awarded a 2016 Rona Jaffe Writer’s Foundation Award\, the 2016 Louis Untermeyer Scholarship from Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts award as well as fellowships from Cave Canem\, Callaloo\, and the James Merrill House. She received her B.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania\, her M.P.A. from the University of Michigan\, and her M.F.A. from the University of Michigan Helen Zell Writers’ Program. Matthews is working on her second poetry collection\, under/class\, which explores the behavioral and cultural ramifications of poverty. She lives in Detroit\, Michigan\, with her husband and four children. \nRoger Reeves received an M.F.A. in creative writing and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas\, Austin. His poems have appeared in Poetry\, Ploughshares\, American Poetry Review\, Boston Review\, Tin House\, Best American Poetry\, and the Indiana Review\, among other publications\, and he was included in Best New Poets 2009. Reeves was awarded a Ruth Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation in 2008; he is also the recipient of two Bread Loaf Scholarships and a Cave Canem Fellowship. In 2012\, Reeves received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Pushcart Prize for his poem “The Field Museum.” He is an Assistant Professor of Poetry at the University of Illinois\, Chicago\, and a 2014–2015 Hodder Fellow at the Lewis Center for the Arts\, Princeton University. King Me (Copper Canyon Press\, 2013) is Reeves’s first book. \nSafiya Sinclair was born and raised in Montego Bay\, Jamaica. She is the author of Cannibal\, winner of a Whiting Writers’ Award\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Addison M. Metcalf Award\, the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Poetry\, the Phillis Wheatley Book Award\, the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry\, and selected as one of the American Library Association’s “Notable Books of the Year.” Cannibal was a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award\, and longlisted for the PEN Open Book Award and the Dylan Thomas Prize. Sinclair’s other honors include a Pushcart Prize\, a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation\, fellowships from Yaddo\, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. Her poems have appeared in Poetry\, Kenyon Review\, Granta\, The Nation\, New England Review\, Boston Review\, Oxford American\, the 2018 Forward Book of Poetry\, and elsewhere. She received her MFA in poetry at the University of Virginia\, and is currently a PhD candidate in literature and creative writing at the University of Southern California.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Romero Lives: Pittsburgh Celebrates George A. Romero city-wide tribute\, we present a screening of George A. Romero’s Season of the Witch. Billed as Romero’s “feminist film\,” Season of the Witch stars Joan Mitchell as an unhappy\, suburban housewife. Frustrated by her home life\, with an uncommunicative businessman husband and a distant 19-year-old daughter\, Joan seeks solace in witchcraft after visiting Marion Hamilton\, a local tarot reader and leader of a secret black arts wicca set. After dabbling in witchcraft\, Joan\, believing herself to have become a real witch\, withdraws into a fantasy world and sinks deeper and deeper into a new lifestyle where fantasy and reality are blurred. Eventually\, tragedy results. Following the screening\, filmmaker Peggy Ahwesh\, (b. 1954)\, a prolific filmmaker and video artist based in New York\, will discuss her practice and the influence and legacy of George A. Romero with the University of Pittsburgh’s Ben Ogrodnik. This event is organized by Jessica Beck\, Adam Lowenstein\, and Ben Ogrodnik. \nSeating is first come\, first served.

SUMMARY:Stars of the Silver Screen Rooftop Shindig
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) are teaming up with Pittsburgh Filmmakers to present a special edition of the PDP’s popular Rooftop Shindig series highlighted by a screening of the 1932 Greta Garbo and Ramon Novarro spy thriller\, Mata Hari (1932). The event will also feature entertainment by Phat Man Dee accompanied by other performers\, food\, themed cocktails\, and a vintage fashion market produced by Second Shift Crafters. Vendors include: 100% Polyverse\, Black Lodge Vintage\, Calf Paths of the Mind\, Collectors Crypt\, Great Stuff\, Hip Modern Soap\, Lucky’s Cane and Grog\, Most Wanted Fine Arts\, North Ave Candles\, Shindig Alley\, Sub Rosa Pgh\, The Bluest Hatter\, U’Niki An’Tiki\, Vintage Alley\, Who New? and The Warhol Store. The movie will be shown at dusk and guests are encouraged to bring their own seating or blanket though a limited number of stadium chairs will be available for purchase. Rooftop Shindigs are made possible with the support of Alco Parking\, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust\, WYEP & WESA FM. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the summer exhibition\, Andy Warhol: Stars of the Silver Screen\, we present the Silver Screen Bazaar\, featuring a variety of Hollywood-related memorabilia and collectibles from Pittsburgh-area vendors including John Amplas (George Romero’s Martin)\, Gary Boas\, Rick Bach\, Jerry’s Records\, Get Hip Records\, Jan Beatty\, Christina Lee\, Steeltown Entertainment\, Theatre Historical Society of America\, Corey LeChat\, Wayno and PJ McArdle. The Garment District performs a DJ set in the entrance space\, and we present the Pittsburgh premiere of the Warhol film San Diego Surf (1968/1996)\, featuring Warhol Superstars Viva\, Taylor Mead\, Joe Dallesandro\, and Ingrid Superstar. \nPlease note the film San Diego Surf contains adult content. \nThe event area is free. Full museum admission is at the Good Fridays half-price admission rate.
