SUMMARY:Screening of Sir Drone
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of Raymond Pettibon’s 1989 film\, Sir Drone\, selected by Kim Gordon. Described by Gordon as “epic”\, Sir Drone follows teenagers from the industrial part of Los Angeles as they try to form a punk band in Hollywood. The film features artist Mike Kelley\, bassist Matt Watt\, and even a character named “Goo”. Shot in two days on home-video equipment with dialogue read off cue cards\, Sir Drone is part of a series of feature-length\, low-tech video narratives that Pettibon made in the late 1980s focused on West Coast American radical subjects of the 1960s and 1970s. The screening will feature a personal video introduction from Kim Gordon. Registration is required. \nPresented in conjunction with the exhibition Kim Gordon: Lo-Fi Glamour. \n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:We present the Pittsburgh premiere of the documentary\, Making Montgomery Clift (2018)\, about the accomplished and influential Hollywood actor. Known for bucking traditions on and off screen\, countless biographies have reduced Clift to labels like “tragically self-destructive” and “tormented” because of his queer sexuality. Now\, directors Robert Clift—Montgomery’s nephew—and Hillary Demmon rigorously re-examine these flawed narratives through the eyes of those who knew him. Drawing on interviews with family and loved ones\, as well as a rich collection of unreleased archival materials from both Montgomery and his brother\, Brooks Clift\, this fresh portrait of the actor’s passions\, contributions\, and commitment to living and working in his own way gives one of Hollywood’s underappreciated legends his due. SUMMARY:Sound Series: Adam Green’s Aladdin
DESCRIPTION:We welcome musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green for a unique evening featuring a solo acoustic performance of songs from his second feature film Adam Green’s Aladdin\, followed by a full screening of the film. Shot entirely on papier-mache sets designed by Green\, this immersive fantasy film stars an eclectic cast including Macaulay Culkin\, Natasha Lyonne\, Alia Shawkat\, Jack Dishel\, and Francesco Clemente – with Green playing Aladdin. In Green’s take on this classic tale\, the lamp is a 3-D printer\, the Princess is a decadent socialite\, the planet gets a sex-change\, and its population prints out an analogue version of the Internet. Regarding the connectivity between his music\, art and filmmaking\, Green says “If you listen to my songs\, you see they’re kind of cartoonish. I try to make songs like my paintings. When creating my movie\, I approached the script like it was a song.” Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \n \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

Highlighting the impact of art in contemporary AIDS activism and advocacy\, the program features new short videos from six inspiring community organizations and collectives—ACT UP New York\, Positive Women’s Network\, Sero Project\, The SPOT\, Tacoma Action Collective\, and VOCAL-NY.\n \nALTERNTE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS seeks to reflect the persisting urgencies of today’s HIV/AIDS epidemic\, including HIV criminalization\, Big Pharma\, homelessness\, and the disproportionate effects of HIV on marginalized communities. At a moment of growing interest in the histories of AIDS activism\, ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS foregrounds contemporary engagements between activists\, artists\, and cultural workers on the front lines.

SUMMARY:The Black Ecstatic: An Evening of Poetry & Film
DESCRIPTION:Three contemporary black poets\, Airea D. Matthews\, Roger Reeves\, and Safiya Sinclair\, and filmmaker Jamal T. Lewis will consider how “the ecstatic” functions in their artistic work and personal lives\, within the context of the contemporary moment\, where attention to black political and social life emphasizes death and unjustifiable violence. The program\, which will include poetry performances\, a brief film screening\, and discussion\, is organized and moderated by Rickey Laurentiis\, the inaugural Fellow in Creative Writing at Center for African American Poetry and Poetics. This program is presented in conjunction with our Devan Shimoyama: Cry\, Baby exhibition\, curated by Jessica Beck\, the Milton Fine curator of art at The Warhol.\n\nFounded in 2016\, Center for African American Poetry (CAAPP) at the University of Pittsburgh is a creative think tank for African American and African diasporic poetries and poetics whose mission is to highlight\, promote\, and share the poetry and poetic work of African American writers. The center’s programming aims to present exciting live poetry and conversation\, contextualize the meaning of that work\, and archive it for future generations\, while also operating as space for innovative collaboration between writers\, scholars\, and other artists thinking through poetics as a unique and contemporary movement. \nRickey Laurentiis was raised in New Orleans\, Louisiana\, and is the author of Boy with Thorn (2015)\, which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize\, the Levis Reading Prize\, and was a finalist for the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. Other honors include fellowships from the Whiting Foundation\, the Lannan Literary Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation\, and the Poetry Foundation. Laurentiis’ poem\, “Visible City\,” opened Notes for Now\, the catalogue for Prospect.3 New Orleans\, curated by Franklin Sirmans. Laurentiis currently lives in Pittsburgh\, and is the inaugural Fellow in Creative Writing at the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics at the University of Pittsburgh. \nJamal T. Lewis\, b. 1990\, is an emerging multidisciplinary artist\, writer\, and documentary filmmaker. Lewis resides in Bedstuy\, Brooklyn\, and hails from Atlanta\, Georgia. Named by Teen Vogue as one of the “coolest queers on the internet\,” Lewis is also known as ‘fatfemme’\, a moniker that encapsulates life at the intersection of fat and femme identity — “spaces that people are afraid to occupy\,” she names. A graduate of Morehouse College and The New School\, Lewis produces work around the body\, specifically exploring and interrogating identity formation\, race\, gender\, sexuality\, desire\, beauty\, and ugliness. Lewis’s work has been featured in LA Times and New York Times. \nAirea D. Matthews’ first collection of poems\, Simulacra\, received the 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award (Yale University Press\, 2017). Her work has appeared in Best American Poets 2015\, American Poets\, Four Way Review\, The Indiana Review\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, and elsewhere. She was awarded a 2016 Rona Jaffe Writer’s Foundation Award\, the 2016 Louis Untermeyer Scholarship from Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts award as well as fellowships from Cave Canem\, Callaloo\, and the James Merrill House. She received her B.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania\, her M.P.A. from the University of Michigan\, and her M.F.A. from the University of Michigan Helen Zell Writers’ Program. Matthews is working on her second poetry collection\, under/class\, which explores the behavioral and cultural ramifications of poverty. She lives in Detroit\, Michigan\, with her husband and four children. \nRoger Reeves received an M.F.A. in creative writing and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas\, Austin. His poems have appeared in Poetry\, Ploughshares\, American Poetry Review\, Boston Review\, Tin House\, Best American Poetry\, and the Indiana Review\, among other publications\, and he was included in Best New Poets 2009. Reeves was awarded a Ruth Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation in 2008; he is also the recipient of two Bread Loaf Scholarships and a Cave Canem Fellowship. In 2012\, Reeves received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Pushcart Prize for his poem “The Field Museum.” He is an Assistant Professor of Poetry at the University of Illinois\, Chicago\, and a 2014–2015 Hodder Fellow at the Lewis Center for the Arts\, Princeton University. King Me (Copper Canyon Press\, 2013) is Reeves’s first book. \nSafiya Sinclair was born and raised in Montego Bay\, Jamaica. She is the author of Cannibal\, winner of a Whiting Writers’ Award\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Addison M. Metcalf Award\, the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Poetry\, the Phillis Wheatley Book Award\, the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry\, and selected as one of the American Library Association’s “Notable Books of the Year.” Cannibal was a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award\, and longlisted for the PEN Open Book Award and the Dylan Thomas Prize. Sinclair’s other honors include a Pushcart Prize\, a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation\, fellowships from Yaddo\, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. Her poems have appeared in Poetry\, Kenyon Review\, Granta\, The Nation\, New England Review\, Boston Review\, Oxford American\, the 2018 Forward Book of Poetry\, and elsewhere. She received her MFA in poetry at the University of Virginia\, and is currently a PhD candidate in literature and creative writing at the University of Southern California.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Romero Lives: Pittsburgh Celebrates George A. Romero city-wide tribute\, we present a screening of George A. Romero’s Season of the Witch. Billed as Romero’s “feminist film\,” Season of the Witch stars Joan Mitchell as an unhappy\, suburban housewife. Frustrated by her home life\, with an uncommunicative businessman husband and a distant 19-year-old daughter\, Joan seeks solace in witchcraft after visiting Marion Hamilton\, a local tarot reader and leader of a secret black arts wicca set. Tarzan and Jane Regained… Sort Of\, one of his earliest films\, is a Warholian take on jungle adventure films and features Superstar Taylor Mead and Naomi Levine and Dennis Hopper as the title characters in a romp around Hollywood. This film is paired with the classic Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) starring Olympic swimmer Johnny Weismuller\, whose life-size portrait Warhol kept in his collection.

DESCRIPTION:Talks Back is a screening program and an extension of HACKING / MODDING / REMIXING as Feminist Protest\, an exhibition of interventions and provocations on pop culture by women in technology from 1978 to present at Carnegie Mellon University’s Miller Gallery. The exhibtion is on view January 27 to February 26\, 2017. The screening program includes video works by women artists who\, like Andy Warhol himself\, have opted to move away from the limitations of gallery contexts and art world audiences and put themselves in conversation with television and cinema (and their audiences). Inspired by the possibilities offered by public access television in so-called low culture\, these artists bring new meaning to films and television programming by inserting themselves into existing media narratives. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Michael Chow aka Zhou Yinghua: Voice for My Father\, the museum will hold daily screenings of Murder in the Oratory (1937)\, directed by renowned filmmaker Fei Mu. Featuring Zhou Xinfang\, Michael Chow’s father\, the film depicts a dramatic tale of deceit\, murder\, and family quarrels. Fei Mu merges the operatic and the filmic\, crossing the stylized flair and song of Beijing opera with expressive camera angles. \nThe film will run daily from February 13–May 8\, 2016\, during the run of the exhibition. \nFilm schedules are subject to change. SUMMARY:Warhol Video Premiere Celebrating Video Art’s 50 Year Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1965\, Andy Warhol was loaned consumer grade video equipment by the Norelco Company. He recorded 10 tapes\, including one of Edie Sedgwick. On September 29\, 1965\, Richard Ekstract\, publisher of Tape Recording magazine who had arranged the loan\, threw a party at an abandoned private railway station under the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City\, where these tapes were shown. Later that fall\, Warhol shot the film Outer and Inner Space\, in which he seats Edie Sedgwick in front of a television screen showing her pre-recorded video image; as the videotape plays\, she responds to her own duplicate and talks with someone off-screen. The result is a fascinating dual portrait\, which highlights Sedgwick’s beauty as well as her fascinating personality. \nOn the 50th anniversary of this 1965 party\, The Warhol celebrates this seminal moment in the history of video art by streaming excerpts of the original video tapes featuring Edie Sedgwick on September 29\, 2015\, at 2 p.m.\, on Periscope. SUMMARY:Unseen Treasures from George Eastman House 2014: The Unknown 
DESCRIPTION:A year before director Tod Browning made Freaks\, the classic which shocked the world and accelerated the establishment of Hollywood’s production code\, he shot this carnival world tragedy. Lon Chaney plays a burglar on the lam who hides out in the circus as Alonzo the Armless\, a performer who throws knives with his feet. Alonzo falls hard for his co-performer Estrelita\, a woman who has had her fill of men and their groping hands and is unaware of Alonzo’s secret. Matters become complicated when the circus strongman Malabar also becomes smitten with Estrelita. \nA live score for the film will be composed and performed by Michael Johnsen (electronics) in collaboration with Jessica Marcrum (voice).

DESCRIPTION:The weirdly innocent Harry Langdon\, one of the “Great Four”\, silent comedians (alongside Charlie Chaplin\, Buster Keaton\, and Harold Lloyd)\, makes his feature debut as a befuddled hobo who mistakenly enters a cross-country walking race with prize money at stake which could save his family from otherwise certain eviction from their home. This comedy\, co-written by Frank Capra\, showcases some jaw-dropping stunts and features rising star Joan Crawford in her first significant role as Langdon’s love interest. \nA live score for the film will be composed and performed by Tom Roberts (piano).
