SUMMARY:Screening of George A. Romero’s Season of the Witch with filmmaker Peggy Ahwesh
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Romero Lives: Pittsburgh Celebrates George A. Romero city-wide tribute\, we present a screening of George A. Romero’s Season of the Witch. Billed as Romero’s “feminist film\,” Season of the Witch stars Joan Mitchell as an unhappy\, suburban housewife. Frustrated by her home life\, with an uncommunicative businessman husband and a distant 19-year-old daughter\, Joan seeks solace in witchcraft after visiting Marion Hamilton\, a local tarot reader and leader of a secret black arts wicca set. After dabbling in witchcraft\, Joan\, believing herself to have become a real witch\, withdraws into a fantasy world and sinks deeper and deeper into a new lifestyle where fantasy and reality are blurred. Eventually\, tragedy results. Following the screening\, filmmaker Peggy Ahwesh\, (b. 1954)\, a prolific filmmaker and video artist based in New York\, will discuss her practice and the influence and legacy of George A. Romero with the University of Pittsburgh’s Ben Ogrodnik. This event is organized by Jessica Beck\, Adam Lowenstein\, and Ben Ogrodnik. \nSeating is first come\, first served.

DESCRIPTION:Curated by Erin Christovale and Vivian Crockett for Visual AIDS\, ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, RADICAL BEGINNINGS\, the 28th iteration of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art project\, prioritizes Black narratives within the ongoing AIDS epidemic\, commissioning seven artists—Mykki Blanco\, Cheryl Dunye and Ellen Spiro\, Reina Gossett\, Thomas Allen Harris\, Kia Labeija\, Tiona McClodden and Brontez Purnell—to create new and innovative short videos.\n\nThe commissioned projects include intimate meditations of young HIV positive protagonists; a consideration of community-based HIV/AIDS activism in the South; explorations of the legacies and contemporary resonances within AIDS archives; a poetic journey through New York exploring historical traces of queer and trans life\, and more. Together\, the videos provide a platform centering voices deeply impacted by the ongoing epidemic. \nThe project is supported by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and the generous support of The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) are teaming up with Pittsburgh Filmmakers to present a special edition of the PDP’s popular Rooftop Shindig series highlighted by a screening of the 1932 Greta Garbo and Ramon Novarro spy thriller\, Mata Hari (1932). The event will also feature entertainment by Phat Man Dee accompanied by other performers\, food\, themed cocktails\, and a vintage fashion market produced by Second Shift Crafters. Vendors include: 100% Polyverse\, Black Lodge Vintage\, Calf Paths of the Mind\, Collectors Crypt\, Great Stuff\, Hip Modern Soap\, Lucky’s Cane and Grog\, Most Wanted Fine Arts\, North Ave Candles\, Shindig Alley\, Sub Rosa Pgh\, The Bluest Hatter\, U’Niki An’Tiki\, Vintage Alley\, Who New? and The Warhol Store. The movie will be shown at dusk and guests are encouraged to bring their own seating or blanket though a limited number of stadium chairs will be available for purchase. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and Ace Hotel Pittsburgh present a double feature film screening of Andy Warhol’s Tarzan & Jane Regained… Sort Of (1963) and Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) in the Ace Hotel gym. Many of Warhol’s 1960s films reflect the influence of movies he watched in Oakland cinemas when he was a child in 1930s Pittsburgh. Tarzan and Jane Regained… Sort Of\, one of his earliest films\, is a Warholian take on jungle adventure films and features Superstar Taylor Mead and Naomi Levine and Dennis Hopper as the title characters in a romp around Hollywood. This film is paired with the classic Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) starring Olympic swimmer Johnny Weismuller\, whose life-size portrait Warhol kept in his collection.

In the first film adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s novel A Clockwork Orange\, superstar Gerard Malanga plays a juvenile delinquent named Victor who is arrested and then reprogrammed in order to protect mainstream society from his ultraviolent behavior. The iconic Edie Sedgwick makes her screen debut\, casually smoking amidst the drug fueled\, sadomasochistic activities swirling.

SUMMARY:Talks Back: A Screening Program
DESCRIPTION:Talks Back is a screening program and an extension of HACKING / MODDING / REMIXING as Feminist Protest\, an exhibition of interventions and provocations on pop culture by women in technology from 1978 to present at Carnegie Mellon University’s Miller Gallery. The exhibtion is on view January 27 to February 26\, 2017. The screening program includes video works by women artists who\, like Andy Warhol himself\, have opted to move away from the limitations of gallery contexts and art world audiences and put themselves in conversation with television and cinema (and their audiences). Inspired by the possibilities offered by public access television in so-called low culture\, these artists bring new meaning to films and television programming by inserting themselves into existing media narratives. The exhibition and screening are curated by Angela Washko\, visiting assistant professor of art at Carnegie Mellon University. \nThe program features a live performance by Ann Hirsch. Artists in the program include Ann Hirsch\, Barbara Hammer\, Dynasty Handbag\, Narcissister\, Rachel Rampleman\, Sadie Benning\, Sondra Perry\, and Suzie Silver. \nPlease note this program contains adult subject matter.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Andy Warhol: My Perfect Body\, the museum screens daily Hedy (1966\, 66 minutes)\, directed by Andy Warhol with scenario by Ronald Tavel and music by John Cale and Lou Reed. A satirical farce\, Hedy portrays the story of faded Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr. Once celebrated as one of the most beautiful women alive\, Lamarr was famously arrested for shop lifting in a Los Angeles department store. Fact and fiction collide as celebrity gossip is used to present a darker side of fame\, one in which beauty and pain become synonymous. The film stars Mario Montez as Hedy\, along with Arnold Rockwood\, Jack Smith\, Ingrid Superstar\, Mary Woronov\, Harvey Tavel\, Ronald Tavel\, Randy Bourscheidt\, Roderick Clayton\, James Fox Claire\, and David Myers. \nThe film runs daily from October 21\, 2016 – January 22\, 2017\, during the run of the exhibition. \nFilm schedules are subject to change. SUMMARY:Warhol Video Premiere Celebrating Video Art’s 50 Year Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1965\, Andy Warhol was loaned consumer grade video equipment by the Norelco Company. He recorded 10 tapes\, including one of Edie Sedgwick. On September 29\, 1965\, Richard Ekstract\, publisher of Tape Recording magazine who had arranged the loan\, threw a party at an abandoned private railway station under the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City\, where these tapes were shown. Later that fall\, Warhol shot the film Outer and Inner Space\, in which he seats Edie Sedgwick in front of a television screen showing her pre-recorded video image; as the videotape plays\, she responds to her own duplicate and talks with someone off-screen. The result is a fascinating dual portrait\, which highlights Sedgwick’s beauty as well as her fascinating personality. \nOn the 50th anniversary of this 1965 party\, The Warhol celebrates this seminal moment in the history of video art by streaming excerpts of the original video tapes featuring Edie Sedgwick on September 29\, 2015\, at 2 p.m.\, on Periscope. DESCRIPTION:A year before director Tod Browning made Freaks\, the classic which shocked the world and accelerated the establishment of Hollywood’s production code\, he shot this carnival world tragedy. Lon Chaney plays a burglar on the lam who hides out in the circus as Alonzo the Armless\, a performer who throws knives with his feet. Alonzo falls hard for his co-performer Estrelita\, a woman who has had her fill of men and their groping hands and is unaware of Alonzo’s secret. Matters become complicated when the circus strongman Malabar also becomes smitten with Estrelita. \nA live score for the film will be composed and performed by Michael Johnsen (electronics) in collaboration with Jessica Marcrum (voice).

DESCRIPTION:Comedian Eddie Cantor made two silent films before become a star.  In this\, his second silent\, he plays a clumsy mailman who is in love with Madge the waitress and struggling against three rivals\, including a policemen\, a fireman\, and a shady promoter. Although Eddie loses out on a chance to escort Madge to the postal ball\, he still attends and impresses when his wild pirouettes win him the grand prize in the Black Bottom dance contest. When he discovers that one of his rivals is con man\, he exposes the villians and finally wins Madge’s love. Special Delivery was directed by comedian Fatty Arbuckle\, under the pseudonym “William Goodrich\,” who was unsuccessfully trying to make a comeback after the sex scandal that ruined his career. \nA new score for the film composed and performed by Tom Roberts (piano) will be debuted live. \nThe Warhol Museum continues its partnership with the world-renowned photograph and motion picture archives\, George Eastman House\, to bring rarely shown silent and early sound masterpieces from its extensive collection exclusively to Pittsburgh.

DESCRIPTION:American auteur director Raoul Walsh (High Sierra\, White Heat) directs this beautiful and surreal fantasy which centers around a circus love triangle between the lovely tightrope walker\, played by Olive Borden who is considered to be among the most beautiful actresses of the era; an acrobat who impersonates a talking chimpanzee; and a former suitor who poses as the “animal” trainer. The makeup was done by Jack Pierce\, who also created some of the cinema’s most famous monsters including The Wolf Man and Frankenstein’s Monster. \nA new score for the film composed and performed by Michael Johnsen (electronics) and Tom Roberts (piano) will be debuted live. \nThe Warhol Museum continues its partnership with the world-renowned photograph and motion picture archives\, George Eastman House\, to bring rarely shown silent and early sound masterpieces from its extensive collection exclusively to Pittsburgh.

SUMMARY:Unseen Treasures from George Eastman House 2013: West of Zanzibar 
DESCRIPTION:Master Tod Browning directs this over the top jungle melodrama in which Lon Chaney plays a wrathful vaudeville magician known as “Dead Legs\,” who is driven to exact insane revenge on the ivory trader (Lionel Barrymore) who crippled him and stole his beloved wife.  When his dying wife returns with a baby girl a year after leaving him\, he sends the lover’s child to a brothel and spends the next 20 years in an African swamp with a dissipated doctor\, where he manipulates the local tribe into thinking that he’s a powerful sorcerer. Claiming the debauched girl (Mary Nolan) when she comes of age\, he sets into motion his long laid plan to lure the trader to his lair and have the locals burn them both alive. One of ten features Browning and Chaney made together\, this film probes the darkest recesses of their psyche in one of the silent era’s most manic productions. \nA new score for the film composed by Douglas Levine will be debuted live with the composer on keyboard and Ben Opie on woodwinds. \nThe Warhol Museum continues its partnership with the world-renowned photograph and motion picture archives\, George Eastman House\, to bring rarely shown silent and early sound masterpieces from its extensive collection exclusively to Pittsburgh.
