SUMMARY:Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Screening
DESCRIPTION:MS 89 is back with a special screening of our 1995 Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant\, co-hosted by Harrison Apple (Pittsburgh Queer History Project) and former contestant Jezebel Bebbington D’Opulence (The Puerto Rican Princess of Pittsburgh). Join us for a once in a life-time community nightclub archives event\, taking place in The Warhol theater\, where the pageant played out almost 30 years ago. \nThe MS 89 series is a live and in-person only nightclub archives screening event. Community members host screenings and discussions of tapes that they had a hand in creating. Pushing back against the tendency to consume archives\, MS 89 packs together to watch and rewatch as a ritual in creating new intergenerational friendships via their shared desire for a shared past. \nThis event is made possible by a generous gift from the Dietrich Humanities Scholars Program\, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry\, and The Andy Warhol Museum. \nAbout Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame \nThe Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant was created by Raina Lampkins-Fielder (former education program coordinator) and Glenn Brown (NYC Ball Scene). With a star studded line-up of contestants and judges from Pittsburgh’s queer nightlife\, Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame tells a lesser known story of cultural meaning making spanning performers\, museum curators\, and after-dark personalities from the Steel City. The documentary footage was captured and edited by filmmaker Roberta Kenney with editing support from filmmaker Chris Ivey\, and produced in the editing bays of the former Pittsburgh Filmmakers. As a result of interviews with members of the House of D’Opulence\, Apple and Kenney connected to reintroduce this footage by donating her source tapes to the Pittsburgh Queer History Project in 2021. \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\n\n

In this conversation the panel discusses Warhol’s participation in club culture beginning in the late 1970s and his representation of Black celebrities ranging from Grace Jones and Aretha Franklin to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The panel unpacks Warhol’s social ties\, his engagement with Black music culture\, and interest in exclusive entertainment circles throughout the 1980s. \nAdrian Loving\nAdrian Loving is a visual arts educator at Georgetown Day HS in Washington\, D.C.\, cultural historian\, and DJ – curating public programming\, exhibitions and performing internationally. His 2021 book Fade to Grey: Androgyny\, Style and Art in 80s Dance Music focuses on the intersection of art\, gender and dance music. Loving will appear in the forthcoming PBS documentary Making Black America in Fall 2022. \nFab 5 Freddy\nFred Brathwaite\, aka Fab 5 Freddy emerged in the late 1970’s as a New York City graffiti artist who was one of the first to exhibit his paintings internationally. Along with friends and contemporaries\, Futura 2000\, Keith Haring\, Lee Quiñones and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Fab was a key player in New York’s 1980’s downtown cultural scene instrumental in elevating graffiti into a disruptive movement that would eventually give birth to street art. In addition to his visual art\, Fab co-produced\, starred in and composed the music for the cult classic film\, Wild Style and went on to direct music videos for numerous hip hop stars. From the late 1980’s into the mid-90’s he was the original host of YO! MTV Raps\, the groundbreaking TV show that took hip hop culture global. Today he continues to make and exhibit his visual art and produce and direct projects for film and television. \nRory Trifon\nRory Trifon is the nephew of Richard Bernstein and President of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. The Estate of Richard Bernstein is the heir to the legal rights and interests of the Artist; the mission of which is to honor him by maintaining and enhancing his legacy and to make his art more accessible to audiences throughout the world. Trifon formally created the estate in 2016. He has since produced the book Richard Bernstein Starmaker: Andy Warhol’s Cover Artist (Rizzoli\, 2018) and led the Estate’s business relations with museums\, galleries\, publishers\, and licensing operations with brands such as Coach\, Loewe\, Henzel Studio\, and Flavorpaper. He holds a B.A. from The University of Connecticut. Please visit www.RichardBernsteinArt.com for more information.  \n\nDoors open at 1:30 p.m.\nMasking is optional for this event.

SUMMARY:Darrell Thorne at The Warhol
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Good Friday evening of queer dramatic fantasy\, excess\, and opulence infused with storytelling by celebrated performance artist\, Darrell Thorne. Darrell will present a new live performance followed by a discussion with local artist Heidi Wiren Bartlett. \nDarrell Thorne (b. 1976\, Branson\, Missouri) lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York. He enjoys exploring the many dualities and contradictions that exist in all facets of society\, utilizing fantasy\, camp\, and beauty (and plenty of mirrors) to reflect on what unites and divides us. Through song\, spoken word\, movement\, and dance\, coupled with highly detailed costume and makeup\, Darrell invites viewers to be transported and elevated without sacrificing entertainment. A lover of ritual\, iconography\, fantasy\, and storytelling\, Darrell attempts to channel all these elements through costuming and paint on his body\, coupled with live performance. He has exhibited and performed at the Park Avenue Armory\, SFMOMA\, Lincoln Center\, Brooklyn Academy of Music\, Chashama\, New York Academy of Art\, Helsinki Night of Arts\, The Smithsonian\, Rubulad\, The Mexico City Cabaret Festival\, and received an NEA grant for his six week performative installation Under Glass and In Color. \n\nMasks will be optional for this performance.\nNotice for all buyers – By attending an in-person event at any of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh\, you and any guests agree to voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 and agree not to hold any presenting entities\, artists\, and the venue; or any of their affiliates\, directors\, officers\, employees\, agents\, contractors\, or volunteers liable for any illness or injury.\n\n

SUMMARY:Future Tense: Microcinema Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of films and conversation with co-curators Barbara London and Ellen Larson.  \nWe are living in a time of crisis. Anxieties about the future and questions concerning the sustainability of the planet and its inhabitants have never felt more urgent. Future Tense asks how artists approach these and other global uncertainties in relationship to identity\, home\, and environment. Selected films highlight both the fragility and resilience of human ingenuity in relationship to nature\, space\, and place. Collectively\, the artists included in this program direct themselves towards the future. They look to the past to reclaim lost histories while simultaneously imagining new possible futures. Participating artists: Imani Dennison\, Fang Tianyu\, Thomas Allen Harris\, Pedro Neves Marques\, Joan Michel\, Su Yu-Hsin\, Wang Mowen\, and Zheng Yuan.  \nBarbara London is a New York-based curator and writer who founded the video-media exhibition and collection programs at The Museum of Modern Art\, where she worked between 1973 and 2013. SUMMARY:Last Look with Lucia Hierro and Jessica Beck: Marisol and Warhol Take New York
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the closing of the exhibition Marisol and Warhol Take New York\, Jessica Beck\, Milton Fine curator of art\, joins conceptual artist Lucia Hierro for a conversation in the galleries to discuss Marisol’s life\, work\, and legacy. Exploring the exhibition together\, Beck and Hierro bring contemporary perspectives to Marisol’s practice and unpack her influence on the 1960’s New York art world in addition to her continued relevance today. \nLucia Hierro has worked with the Pop aesthetic since her early years at art school and infuses personal narrative and cultural identity into the Pop tradition. Her work is a reminder that Pop is a contemporary genre that continues to engage new artists and address issues of contemporary life.  \nVisitors can convene in The Warhol entrance space at 2 p.m. where they will be ushered to the entrance of the exhibition on the fourth floor.  \nLucia Hierro (b. 1987) is a Dominican American conceptual artist born and raised in New York City\, Washington Heights/Inwood\, and currently based in the South Bronx. Hierro’s practice\, which includes sculpture\, digital media\, and installation\, confronts twenty-first century capitalism through an intersectional lens. She received a BFA from SUNY Purchase (2010) and an MFA from Yale School of Art (2013). Hierro’s work has been exhibited at venues including the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco\, Jeffrey Deitch Gallery (Los Angeles)\, Elizabeth Dee Gallery (New York)\, Latchkey Projects (New York)\, Primary Projects (Miami)\, Sean Horton Presents (Dallas)\, and Casa Quien in the Dominican Republic. Her works reside in the collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami\, the JP Morgan & Chase Collection\, Progressive Art Collection\, and the Rennie collection in Vancouver\, among others. \nIn the spring of 2021\, Hierro will exhibit in ESTAMOS BIEN: LA TRIENAL 20/21\, El Museo del Barrio’s (NY) first national large-scale survey of Latinx contemporary art featuring more than 40 artists from the US and Puerto Rico. In June of 2021 Hierro will be the subject of a solo exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield\, CT titled Marginal Costs\, which will be accompanied by an exhibition catalog featuring an essay by Amy Smith-Stewart\, the exhibition’s curator. \n\nPlease note: For your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this event must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and mouth. SUMMARY:Art in Context: Expanding Art History
DESCRIPTION:Out of an abundance of caution\, Art in Context: Expanding Art History has been canceled. \nWhose legacy lives on? Join artists and scholars for a dynamic conversation exploring the visibility of female-identified Latinx art and artists in the canons of art and culture in the contemporary United States. Inspired by the life and work of Marisol\, this conversation will feature author Angie Cruz\, artist Lucia Hierro\, and art historian Ana María Reyes alongside moderator Jennifer Josten of the University of Pittsburgh. \nBorn in Paris to Venezuelan parents\, Marisol (Maria Sol Escobar) held a central position in the New York art scene and international Pop movement in the 1960s. Over time\, however\, she was written out of the white male-dominated narratives of art history\, overshadowed by artists like Andy Warhol\, Roy Lichtenstein\, and Claes Oldenburg. Marisol and Warhol Take New York seeks to reclaim the importance of her practice; reframe the strength\, originality\, and daring nature of her work; and reconsider her as one of the leading figures of the Pop era. This Art in Context discussion will explore how contemporary female-identified United States Latinx artists\, critics\, and historians are constructing alternate art historical narratives and shifting the balance of power in the art world and beyond. Registration is required.  \n\nDoors open at 6:45 p.m.\nPlease note: For your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this event must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and mouth. We reserve the right to require that those in attendance who do not follow safety guidelines or instructions from our staff will be asked to leave the premises. SUMMARY:Counterbalance: Redefining the Archive
DESCRIPTION:In coordination with the exhibition Marisol and Warhol Take New York\, join us for a night of film\, conversation\, and music. Alisha Wormsley\, a Pittsburgh-based artist\, has curated a selection of experimental artist films to celebrate the often-overlooked place of female filmmakers in film history. Inspired by Marisol’s narrative of great acclaim during her lifetime and the subsequent erasure of her place from art history\, Wormsley selected films from six artists\, including Akosua Adoma Owusu\, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz\, Cauleen Smith\, Malakai\, Nan Collymore\, and Kite\, who are making important contributions to reimagining the archive and the advancement of experimental film. The evening includes an introduction from Jessica Beck\, Milton Fine curator of art and organizer of the exhibition\, an introduction to each film by Wormsley and a screening of each film. The night will conclude with music by Pittsburgh-based DJ\, Jessica Fuquay. Registration is required. \nFilms\nDrexciya\nAkosua Adoma Owusu\nSet in an abandoned swimming pool in Accra\, Ghana\, Akosua Adoma Owusu’s Drexciya draws on the myth from the Detroit-based electronic band to create an afrofuturist portrait of an underwater subcontinent populated by the unborn children of African women thrown overboard during the Transatlantic slave trade. The Riviera was once known as Ghana’s first pleasure beach. A one-time extravagant Ambassador Hotel of post- colonial – early Kwame Nkrumah era\, the Riviera Beach Club thrived until the mid-1970’s. The Olympic-sized pool\, now in a dilapidated state\, is used for locals for things other than swimming. \nMarché Salomon\nBeatriz Santiago Muñoz\nTwo young workers at a busy Port-au-Prince open-air market have a conversation about the mystical properties of common objects and whether the divine can inhabit any kind of object—mass-produced bottles\, toxic rivers\, beheaded goats. \nPilgrim\nCauleen Smith\nA live recording of an Alice Coltrane piano performance accompanied by a visual track that documents a pilgrimage across the USA taken by Cauleen Smith\, tracing historic sites of creativity and generosity that were an inspiration to her: Alice Coltrane’s Sai Anantam Ashram; the Watts Towers; and the Watervliet Shaker Historic District. \nSouls\nMalakai\nUnable to deal with her grandmother’s declining mental and physical health\, a young girl uses her cardboard spaceship to escape her reality before the matriarch of her family dies. \nFlâneuse\nNan Collymore\nGrounded in the idea of what Baudelaire described as the “flâneur”—here the shoe is used as a conceit for the true flâneur—the flâneuse—to use as a mode of transport. The shoe\, captured in both still and active moments\, is positioned as an emblematic symbol by which to decipher those elements and to discover the ground upon which those streets reside. \nPahá kiŋ lená wakháŋ\nKite \n“A light cone is the path that a flash of light\,\nFrom a single event\,\nTraveling in all directions\,\nTakes through spacetime. \nOn a two-dimensional plane\,\nThe light from the flash\nSpreads out in a circle.\nThese are all the points I ever reach\nAll points which are the speed of light away from me at birth.” \nMarisol and Warhol Take New York is presented by the Richard King Mellon Foundation and generously supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art\, Jim Spencer and Michael Lin\, Alice and Yaso Snyder and the WP Snyder Charitable Fund\, Dawn and Chris Fleischner\, and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Additional gratitude to friends of The Andy Warhol Museum. \n\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m.\nPlease note: Per CDC Guidelines\, for your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this event must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and mouth. We reserve the right to require that those in attendance who do not follow safety guidelines or instructions from our staff will be asked to leave the premises. SUMMARY:Dandy Andy: Warhol’s Queer History Virtual Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join our educators for an exploration of Warhol’s unique place in LGBTQ+ history in this virtual adaptation of one of our signature tours. While his sexuality is frequently suppressed or debated\, Warhol was a gay man who had several partners throughout his life. His boyfriends were also his colleagues and collaborators\, helping to shape and define his career as an artist. This tour traces Warhol’s romantic relationships and queer identity against the backdrop of the historical gay rights movement in the United States.
