SUMMARY:Darrell Thorne at The Warhol
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Good Friday evening of queer dramatic fantasy\, excess\, and opulence infused with storytelling by celebrated performance artist\, Darrell Thorne. Darrell will present a new live performance followed by a discussion with local artist Heidi Wiren Bartlett. \nDarrell Thorne (b. 1976\, Branson\, Missouri) lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York. He enjoys exploring the many dualities and contradictions that exist in all facets of society\, utilizing fantasy\, camp\, and beauty (and plenty of mirrors) to reflect on what unites and divides us. Through song\, spoken word\, movement\, and dance\, coupled with highly detailed costume and makeup\, Darrell invites viewers to be transported and elevated without sacrificing entertainment. A lover of ritual\, iconography\, fantasy\, and storytelling\, Darrell attempts to channel all these elements through costuming and paint on his body\, coupled with live performance. He has exhibited and performed at the Park Avenue Armory\, SFMOMA\, Lincoln Center\, Brooklyn Academy of Music\, Chashama\, New York Academy of Art\, Helsinki Night of Arts\, The Smithsonian\, Rubulad\, The Mexico City Cabaret Festival\, and received an NEA grant for his six week performative installation Under Glass and In Color. \n\nMasks will be optional for this performance.\nNotice for all buyers – By attending an in-person event at any of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh\, you and any guests agree to voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 and agree not to hold any presenting entities\, artists\, and the venue; or any of their affiliates\, directors\, officers\, employees\, agents\, contractors\, or volunteers liable for any illness or injury.\n\n

SUMMARY:Reel Q LGBTQ+ Film Festival: Workhorse Queen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 36th annual Reel Q LGBTQ+ film festival at The Warhol! Reel Q is the longest running film festival in the Pittsburgh region and the sixth oldest LGBTQ+ film festival in the entire world.   \nWatch the award-winning documentary Workhorse Queen\, followed by a panel discussion with director Angela Washko\, stars Mrs. Kasha Davis\, Mr. Davis (Steven Levins)\, and Ambrosia Salad\, moderated by John Musser (Veronica Bleaus). The screening will be followed by a free reception with Jellyfish DJs\, a cash bar\, and live drag performances by The Hot Boys (Anna Azizzy\, Sienna Cittadino\, BB Kenda)\, Akasha L. Van Cartier\, Dixie Surewood\, Ambrosia Salad (Rochester)\, and Mrs. Kasha Davis (RuPaul’s Drag Race). \nAbout Workhorse Queen\nBy day\, Ed Popil worked as a telemarketer in Rochester\, New York for 18 years. By night\, he transformed into drag queen Mrs. Kasha Davis\, a 1960’s era housewife trying to liberate herself from domestic toil through performing at night in secret – a homage to Ed’s mother. After seven years of auditioning to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race\, Ed Popil was finally cast onto the tv show and thrust into a full-time entertainment career at the late age of 44. In addition to following Popil’s life and career before and after being cast onto RuPaul’s Drag Race\, the film focuses on the growing divide between members of a small town drag community–those who have been on television\, and those who have not. \n\nDoors open at 6:45 p.m.\nPlease note: Per CDC Guidelines\, for your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this event must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and mouth. We reserve the right to require that those in attendance who do not follow safety guidelines or instructions from our staff will be asked to leave the premises. Failure to comply with this policy or rude or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated. Please see our Visitor Conduct Policy for more information.\nNotice for all buyers – By attending an in-person event at any of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh\, you and any guests agree to voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 and agree not to hold any presenting entities\, artists\, and the venue; or any of their affiliates\, directors\, officers\, employees\, agents\, contractors\, or volunteers liable for any illness or injury.\nPlease see our health and safety guidelines.\n\n

SUMMARY:Dandy Andy: Warhol’s Queer History Virtual Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join our educators for an exploration of Warhol’s unique place in LGBTQ+ history in this virtual adaptation of one of our signature tours. While his sexuality is frequently suppressed or debated\, Warhol was a gay man who had several partners throughout his life. His boyfriends were also his colleagues and collaborators\, helping to shape and define his career as an artist. This tour traces Warhol’s romantic relationships and queer identity against the backdrop of the historical gay rights movement in the United States.

SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art 2020: TRANSMISSIONS
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2020 by presenting TRANSMISSIONS\, an online program consisting of six new videos considering the impact of HIV and AIDS beyond the United States. The video program brings together artists working across the world: Jorge Bordello (Mexico)\, Gevi Dimitrakopoulou (Greece)\, Las Indetectables (Chile)\, Lucía Egaña Rojas (Chile/Spain)\, Charan Singh (India/UK)\, and George Stanley Nsamba (Uganda). \nAs the world continues to adapt to living with a new virus\, COVID-19\, these videos offer an opportunity to reflect on the resonances and differences between the two epidemics and their uneven distribution across geography\, race\, and gender. \nTRANSMISSIONS will premiere on Monday\, November 30 at 6 p.m. EST as part of a special online screening event hosted by Visual AIDS and supported by The Warhol. A live Q&A with the commissioned artists will follow the screening. RSVP here to receive updates about this event. \nBeginning Tuesday\, December 1\, the video program will be available to view online at visualaids.org/transmissions.  \nVisual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue\, supporting HIV+ artists\, and preserving a legacy\, because AIDS is not over. \nThis program is presented in honor of our longtime director\, Thomas Sokolowski\, who passed away in May. Tom was one of the founders of Day With(out) Art and served as director of the museum from 1996 to 2010.

SUMMARY:World AIDS Day with Visual AIDS & Jordan Eagles
DESCRIPTION:For World AIDS Day\, The Warhol and Visual AIDS present a video screening for the thirtieth annual Day With(out) Art. This year’s program\, STILL BEGINNING\, features videos covering broad subject matter from anti-stigma work in New Orleans to public sex culture in Chicago. STILL BEGINNING features new work by Shanti Avirgan\, Nguyen Tan Hoang\, Carl George\, Viva Ruiz\, Iman Shervington\, Jack Waters/Victor F.M. Torres\, and Derrick Woods-Morrow. Visual AIDS is a non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue\, supporting HIV+ artists\, and preserving a legacy\, because AIDS is not over. \nResponding to the exhibition Andy Warhol: Revelation\, artist Jordan Eagles will create Illuminations\, a light installation within the museum galleries. Working with blood donated from members of the LGBTQ+ community\, the artist will project images directly onto Andy Warhol’s paintings in order to address the stigma of HIV\, the FDA’s discriminatory ban on blood donation by gay men\, and the value of human life. Eagles is a New York-based artist who has been exploring the aesthetics and ethics of blood as an artistic medium since the late 1990s. \nThe Allies for Health + Wellbeing will be providing information and services for individuals living with\, or at risk of HIV\, viral hepatitis\, and sexually transmitted infections.

These studies aid their current thesis of the thingness of ‘nothing’. \nJesse Factor\nJesse Factor’s solo work is consistently recognized for physical virtuosity\, dramaturgical rigor\, and creative audacity. In Pittsburgh\, Jesse has presented work at PEARLpresents (New Hazlett)\, Fail-Safe Performance Series (Glitter Box) and DONATELLA Queer Variety Show (Arcade Comedy Theater). Her work has been published by Argot Magazine\, Public Source\, Palette Poetry\, and Slush Pile Magazine. When she is not writing she enjoys having intimate conversations with the things that puzzle and delight her\, admiring spiders\, watching horror movies\, and hunting for figs. \nSuzie Silver\nSuzie Silver creates art that alludes to the capacity for desire to disrupt social boundaries and imagine new futures. Her well-known early videos\, Freebird and A Spy are canonical works of queer video art. Silver’s videos have been screened at over 100 festivals on five continents. Her ongoing collaboration\, Fairy Fantastic! a fairy and folk tale video series for gender non-conforming kids of all ages\, has screened at festivals in Belarus\, London\, Portugal\, Romania and Australia. \nGinger Brooks Takahashi\nGinger Brooks Takahashi’s collaborative project-based\, socially enraged practice is an extension of feminist spaces and queer inquiry\, actively building community and nurturing alternative forms of information distribution. Simultaneously gay\, straight\, queer\, masculine\, and feminine\, Princess embodies the fluidity and coherence between the seemingly contradictory. The duo’s Out There is a concept video album and live performance. Released song-by-song\, each episode stands alone and moves the narrative forward to a conclusion. Out There reclaims the original power of MTV by building on the long legacy of concept albums like Ziggy Stardust and Deltron 3030. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art: ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS
DESCRIPTION:ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS is the 29th iteration of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art project. At a moment of growing interest in the histories of AIDS activism\, ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS foregrounds contemporary engagements between activists\, artists\, and cultural workers on the front lines.

SUMMARY:Art in Context: Visibility and Erasure
DESCRIPTION:In 1974 Andy Warhol completed his most lucrative commission—Ladies and Gentlemen\, a series of over 200 striking portraits of African American and Latina drag queens and trans women. The subjects received just $50 to sit for Polaroids in Warhol’s studio\, and they were not named when the work debuted in Italy in 1975. Now over 40 years later researchers at The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts have successfully identified all of Warhol’s subjects in the series\, including iconic transgender performer and activist\, Marsha ‘Pay it No Mind’ Johnson.\n\nJoin us for Happy Birthday\, Marsha! followed by a discussion about visibility\, representation\, and authorship with filmmakers Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel\, moderated by local advocate Ciora Thomas. Happy Birthday\, Marsha! imagines iconic transgender performer and activist\, Marsha ‘Pay it No Mind’ Johnson in the hours before the 1969 anti-policing riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Starring Independent Spirit Award Winner Mya Taylor with cinematography by Arthur Jafa\, Happy Birthday\, Marsha! blends documentary storytelling with historical fiction to counter the endemic erasure of trans women of color from narratives of political resistance.

SUMMARY:Miguel Gutierrez: SADONNA
DESCRIPTION:SADONNA is exactly what it sounds like: sad versions of Madonna songs. In this music project\, choreographer Miguel Gutierrez shows just how tiny the spiritual distance is between the international pop superstar\, who grew up in Bay City\, Michigan and himself\, an international experimental itinerant artist who grew up in Colonia\, New Jersey. Backed by the SLUTINOS\, the Sad Latino Boys Backup Singers\, SADONNA ekes out the melancholy cry for help hidden within Madonna’s uplifting lyrics. \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language.

SUMMARY:Dandy Andy: Warhol’s Queer History
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month\, join artist educators for Dandy Andy\, a tour that focuses on Warhol’s queer history every Saturday and Sunday in June. While his sexuality is frequently suppressed or debated\, Warhol was a gay man who had several partners throughout his life. Warhol’s boyfriends\, including Edward Wallowitch\, John Giorno\, and Jed Johnson\, were also his colleagues and collaborators\, helping to shape and define his career as an artist. This tour traces Warhol’s romantic relationships and queer identity against the backdrop of the historical gay rights movement in the United States. Tours meet on the museum’s seventh floor.
