Why are all of Alexa’s favorite things\, like car-shaped beds\, super balls\, and soccer called “boy things?” Can a barber shop be a doorway to a dreamland? What’s it like to be the only boy ballerina? How do you know if someone “gets you?” The answers to these and many more questions can be found in Friends of Dorothy. The short films in Friends of Dorothy are moving\, hilarious\, beautiful and inventive visions of a genderfluid world that will delight all ages. The duo’s Out There is a concept video album and live performance. Released song-by-song\, each episode stands alone and moves the narrative forward to a conclusion. Highlighting the impact of art in contemporary AIDS activism and advocacy\, the program features new short videos from six inspiring community organizations and collectives—ACT UP New York\, Positive Women’s Network\, Sero Project\, The SPOT\, Tacoma Action Collective\, and VOCAL-NY.\n \nALTERNTE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS seeks to reflect the persisting urgencies of today’s HIV/AIDS epidemic\, including HIV criminalization\, Big Pharma\, homelessness\, and the disproportionate effects of HIV on marginalized communities. DESCRIPTION:In 1974 Andy Warhol completed his most lucrative commission—Ladies and Gentlemen\, a series of over 200 striking portraits of African American and Latina drag queens and trans women. The subjects received just $50 to sit for Polaroids in Warhol’s studio\, and they were not named when the work debuted in Italy in 1975. Now over 40 years later researchers at The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts have successfully identified all of Warhol’s subjects in the series\, including iconic transgender performer and activist\, Marsha ‘Pay it No Mind’ Johnson.\n\nJoin us for Happy Birthday\, Marsha! followed by a discussion about visibility\, representation\, and authorship with filmmakers Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel\, moderated by local advocate Ciora Thomas. Happy Birthday\, Marsha! imagines iconic transgender performer and activist\, Marsha ‘Pay it No Mind’ Johnson in the hours before the 1969 anti-policing riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. A “lady\,” an international celebrity housewife\, and that maternal-like character that’s just a hoot and a holler at all family functions. MKD grew up in Scranton\, PA\, graduated from Marywood University with a BA in Theatre\, and was a principal dancer in the Ballet Theatre of Scranton. She can be heard in her one woman show There’s Always Time for a Cocktail. \nVanessa German\nVanessa German makes art that calls in to reckoning\, the submerged narratives that bridge the intersections of intellectual\, physical and spiritual space. Her work considers the living ricochet of racism and its attendant traumas on the body\, spirit\, and earth in the simultaneity of time. She is a 2018 USA artists fellow\, and winner of the 2017 American Academy of Arts and Letters Jacob Lawrence Prize. \nJoseph Hall\nJoseph Hall is a black\, queer\, transracial adoptee\, podcast lover\, creator\, critic\, and youngest of five. He is Deputy Director at BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance as well as a producer\, curator\, and performer working in New York City and Pittsburgh. As a performer\, he has worked with choreographers Staycee Pearl\, Maree ReMalia\, Lida Winfield\, and Jasmine Hearn\, and video artist Suzie Silver. \nRickey Laurentiis\nLannan Fellow and Whiting Award winner\, Rickey Laurentiis is the author of Boy with Thorn\, winner of the Cave Canem Prize and the Levis Reading Prize\, among other honors. He is currently the inaugural Fellow in Creative Writing at the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics\, University of Pittsburgh. \nRyan M. McKelvey\nRyan M. McKelvey’s performances are usually one-to-one encounters or public interventions. Alter egos occasionally get slipped on\, too. Formative years in poetry and theater brought him to collaboration\, drag\, and live art. He has shown work in Seoul\, Brighton\, Bath\, and Pittsburgh. McKelvey also collaboratively devises projects as Home Soil. \nMICHIYAYA Dance\nMICHIYAYA Dance is an all-women contemporary dance theater company co-founded by Anya Clarke and Mitsuko Verdery. Clarke and Verdery are an award-winning\, multimedia duo from New York City that synthesize dance and visual art. Their work has been featured by Yale University\, the Brooklyn Museum\, Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, Opportunity Fund\, THINX\, Baruch Performing Arts Center\, Gibney\, and more. \nSuzie Silver\nSuzie Silver creates art that alludes to the capacity for desire to disrupt social boundaries and imagine new futures. Her well-known early videos\, Freebird and A Spy are canonical works of queer video art. Silver’s videos have been screened at over 100 festivals on five continents. Her ongoing collaboration\, Fairy Fantastic! a fairy and folk tale video series for gender non-conforming kids of all ages\, has screened at festivals in Belarus\, London\, Portugal\, Romania and Australia. \ntheatriQ\ntheatriQ is an LGBTQA+ youth ensemble with Dreams of Hope\, a arts organization supporting young queer and trans people in the Pittsburgh region. The ensemble creates original work addressing LGBTQA+ themes including a full length play every year. The music group writes\, composes\, and performs music for all theatriQ productions. The group released their first album\, Home\, is 2016. \nTheodore Rexx\nBaltimore-based DJ Theodore Rexx’s dynamic fusion of pop music with global and club beats frequently results in many unexpected twists and turns on the dance floor. As a multi-instrumentalist\, he has also laid down the rhythm for numerous artists and bands\, most notably as a percussionist with the Baltimore Ravens Marching Band.

DESCRIPTION:Curated by Erin Christovale and Vivian Crockett for Visual AIDS\, ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, RADICAL BEGINNINGS\, the 28th iteration of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art project\, prioritizes Black narratives within the ongoing AIDS epidemic\, commissioning seven artists—Mykki Blanco\, Cheryl Dunye and Ellen Spiro\, Reina Gossett\, Thomas Allen Harris\, Kia Labeija\, Tiona McClodden and Brontez Purnell—to create new and innovative short videos.\n\nThe commissioned projects include intimate meditations of young HIV positive protagonists; a consideration of community-based HIV/AIDS activism in the South; explorations of the legacies and contemporary resonances within AIDS archives; a poetic journey through New York exploring historical traces of queer and trans life\, and more. Together\, the videos provide a platform centering voices deeply impacted by the ongoing epidemic. \nThe project is supported by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and the generous support of The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation.

In The Factory\, we will offer a free button-making activity with a variety of queer-themed imagery to choose from. \nGallery talks take place on the 7th floor at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Button-making takes place in The Factory from 1:30-5:00 p.m. \n
