SUMMARY:Sound Series: Rafiq Bhatia with special guest Morgan Stewart
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back composer\, producer\, and guitarist\, Rafiq Bhatia (member of Son Lux) in a trio configuration with fellow Son Lux member Ian Chang and Riley Mulherkar\, as part of a tour supporting his latest album Environments on Anti Records. Following up on Bhatia’s three previous Sound Series performances\, most recently in 2019 with his Breaking English album and two appearances as guitarist with Son Lux\, with whom he earned Oscar and BAFTA nominations for their Everything Everywhere All At Once score\, Bhatia continues to explore the genre boundaries with his inventive guitar textures. According to the BBC\, “[Bhatia’s] music manages to marry the busyness and vibrancy of jazz and the sparseness and sparkle of electronic music.” And according to The Wire\, “Rafiq Bhatia evokes various interweaving ecosystems on Environments with confidence\, gratitude and grace… devastatingly expressive and intricate.” Also a prolific collaborator\, Bhatia has also worked with a wide range of artists including David Byrne\, André Benjamin\, Mitski and Kronos Quartet. Pittsburgh-based ambient musician Morgan Stewart opens the evening with a new body of work—impressionistic and minimal\, rich in texture and tonal nuance. Abstracting traditional structure\, she weaves layered voice and sound into slow-burning compositions that feel both intimate and expansive. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Tara Clerkin Trio with special guest Ricki Weidenhof
DESCRIPTION:We welcome the Bristol-based Tara Clerkin Trio\, on a tour supporting their 2023 EP\, On the Turning Ground\, released on the U.K. record label\, World of Echo. Since Clerkin formed the experimental trio with Patrick Benjamin and Sunny-Joe Paradisos in 2020\, they have been cultivating their unique hybrid aesthetic that combines elements of folk\, dub\, and psychedelia\, as part of Bristol’s underground music scene. In a review in The Wire\, the band is described sonically as\, “Drifting from dubby minimalism to smudged acid jazz\, Tara’s stark and tuneful voice acts as the vehicle for her concise poetic lyricism. The group coalesce disparate influences into a cohesive sound\, reflecting a romantic view of a familiar world.” They visit the intimate Warhol theater just after their appearance at the acclaimed Big Ears Festival in Knoxville\, Tennessee. Pittsburgh-based cellist\, Ricki Weidenhof\, opens the evening. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Dawn Richard & Spencer Zahn with special guest Joseph Shabason
DESCRIPTION:We welcome the New Orleans electro-revival musician and vocalist Dawn Richard and multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, and composer Spencer Zahn. Their debut collaborative album\, Pigments (Merge Records) tells the story of finding one’s self through dance\, self-expression\, and community. Not strictly neoclassical\, jazz\, or ambient electronic\, the project is one long composition that flows through several “movements” guided by five lead instruments: clarinet\, saxophone\, guitar\, strings\, and Richard’s stripped-down vocals. Marking Richard’s first step into the contemporary classical world\, Pigments reveals a new facet of her limitless talents and provides a fresh introduction to Zahn\, whose intimate\, sprawling soundscapes play with principles of open space and motion. Multi-instrumentalist\, Joseph Shabason\, opens the evening. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Jake Xerxes Fussell with special guest David Moore
DESCRIPTION:We welcome songwriter and guitarist\, Jake Xerxes Fussell\, who has distinguished himself as one of his generation’s preeminent interpreters of traditional (and not so traditional) “folk” songs. By recontextualizing ancient vernacular songs and sources of the American South\, he allows them to breathe and speak for themselves and for himself; he alternately inhabits them and allows them to inhabit him. His latest album\, When I’m Called (Fat Possum Records) was produced by James Elkington and mixed by Tucker Martine. In addition to Elkington\, it features the playing of Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station)\, Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver\, Califone)\, and others. Blake Mills contributes guitars on several tracks. Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb provide backing vocals. Pianist and composer\, David Moore\, opens the evening.  \n“…Fussell is the rare contemporary to approach folk in its pure form\, shunning self-penned compositions about bummer relationships to concentrate on material handed down from bygone\, hardened times.” – The New Yorker \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Hatis Noit with special guest Morgan Stewart
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Japanese vocal performer\, Hatis Noit\, hailing from Shiretoko in Hokkaido who now resides in London. Hatis Noit’s accomplished range is astonishingly self-taught\, inspired by everything she could find from Gagaku—Japanese classical music—and operatic styles\, Bulgarian and Gregorian chanting\, to avant-garde and pop vocalists. The name Hatis Noit itself is taken from Japanese folklore\, meaning the stem of the lotus flower. She has recently appeared at various festivals across Europe including David Lynch’s Manchester International Festival takeover. NPR had this to say about her debut full-length album Aura (2022): “Aura is a bold\, impressive debut which signals—loud\, clear and creatively—that when Hatis Noit opens her throat to sing\, we should be listening”. Pittsburgh-based ambient\, experimental musician\, Morgan Stewart opens the evening. Stewart draws on a wide array of influences and synthesizes them into a form that is uniquely hers\, manipulating traditional song structures to deliver an environment that is at once familiar and revelatory. This set will see a deconstruction of previous work to create wholly new arrangements by building layers of texture of voice and sound. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n
