SUMMARY:Rashaad Newsome: Shade Compositions
DESCRIPTION:Rashaad Newsome\, renowned New York based artist\, will make his Pittsburgh debut of Shade Compositions\, an ongoing performance project that launched in 2005. Throughout the Fall of 2018\, Newsome will be working in Pittsburgh\, casting local performers\, and staging rehearsals for Shade Compositions\, the artist’s critically acclaimed performance. In this performance\, Newsome is both conductor\, composer and vocal choreographer\, leading an ensemble of locally cast self-identifying black female and femme performers\, whose individual voices and gestures are synthesized to form improvisatory orchestral music. Newsome explores the complexities of social power structures and questions of agency. \nDuring the performance\, Newsome collages video and audio using hacked video game controllers. For over a decade Newsome has engaged in casual\, but extensive ethnographic and linguistic research into global iterations of “Black Vernacular”—a variety of English natively spoken by most working and middle-class African Americans\, particularly in urban communities. Through his visually engaging and dynamic style of live performance and video\, Newsome explores the complexities of social power structures and questions of agency. \nThis event is organized by Jessica Beck\, the Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Devan Shimoyama: Cry\, Baby. \nRashaad Newsome was born in 1979 in New Orleans\, and lives and works in New York City. He has exhibited and performed in galleries\, museums\, institutions\, and festivals throughout the world including: Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans\, The Whitney Museum\, The Studio Museum in Harlem\, Brooklyn Museum\, MoMAPS1\, SFMOMA\, New Orleans Museum of Art\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\, The Garage Center for Contemporary Culture\, Moscow\, Russia\, and MUSA\, Vienna\, Austria\, and the recently inaugurated National Museum of African American History and Culture. Newsome’s work is in public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, The Brooklyn Museum of Art\, The SFMOMA\, The Studio Museum\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and The McNay Art Museum of San Antonio. In 2010 he participated in the Whitney Biennial\, and in 2011 in Greater New York at MoMAPS1. \nCastings will take place at The Warhol and PearlArts Studios on the following dates: \nThe Warhol:\nWednesday\, November 14\, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.\nThursday\, November 15\, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.\nFriday\, November 16\, 12–7 p.m. \nPearlArts Studios\, 201 N. Braddock Avenue\, Pittsburgh:\nSaturday\, November 17\, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.\nSunday\, November 18\, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.\nMonday\, November 19\, 12–4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Miguel Gutierrez: SADONNA
DESCRIPTION:SADONNA is exactly what it sounds like: sad versions of Madonna songs. In this music project\, choreographer Miguel Gutierrez shows just how tiny the spiritual distance is between the international pop superstar\, who grew up in Bay City\, Michigan and himself\, an international experimental itinerant artist who grew up in Colonia\, New Jersey. Backed by the SLUTINOS\, the Sad Latino Boys Backup Singers\, SADONNA ekes out the melancholy cry for help hidden within Madonna’s uplifting lyrics. \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language.

McKelvey also collaboratively devises projects as Home Soil. \nMICHIYAYA Dance\nMICHIYAYA Dance is an all-women contemporary dance theater company co-founded by Anya Clarke and Mitsuko Verdery. Their work has been featured by Yale University\, the Brooklyn Museum\, Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, Opportunity Fund\, THINX\, Baruch Performing Arts Center\, Gibney\, and more. \nSuzie Silver\nSuzie Silver creates art that alludes to the capacity for desire to disrupt social boundaries and imagine new futures. Her well-known early videos\, Freebird and A Spy are canonical works of queer video art. Silver’s videos have been screened at over 100 festivals on five continents. Her ongoing collaboration\, Fairy Fantastic! a fairy and folk tale video series for gender non-conforming kids of all ages\, has screened at festivals in Belarus\, London\, Portugal\, Romania and Australia. \ntheatriQ\ntheatriQ is an LGBTQA+ youth ensemble with Dreams of Hope\, a arts organization supporting young queer and trans people in the Pittsburgh region. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol partners with Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for the Arts in Society and School of Art to present DarkMatter\, a trans South Asian performance art duo comprised of Alok Vaid-Menon and Janani Balasubramanian. They refer to their performance #ItGetsBitter as an interruption\, which exists within the boundaries of spoken word\, stand-up comedy\, fashion\, and nursery rhymes. The duo shares stories of navigating the world in all of its ordinariness and peculiarity as trans South Asians\, taking the audience on an emotional roller coaster all of the way from the personal to the political that ultimately strives to imagine new ways of being and resisting together. \nThis performance is co-presented with Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for the Arts in Society and School of Art. \nPlease note\, this performance contains strong language.

SUMMARY:Stephen Petronio Company: Merce Cunningham’s RainForest and Petronio’s Locomotor/Non Locomotor
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Petronio has built an astonishing canon of work where music\, visual art\, and fashion collide to heighten bold and engaging modern dance landscapes. Now Petronio revives Merce Cunningham’s iconic RainForest. A must-see for the Pittsburgh dance and art community\, Andy Warhol created his sparkling Silver Clouds especially for RainForest. The floating décor is uncontrollable\, producing a score of movement that cannot play by conventional rules and an atmosphere of free-wheeling anarchy. Locomotor casts Petronio’s virtuosic dancers careening forward and backward through time and space. Non Locomotor\, a companion work\, explores movement deep within a torquing center\, sending surges of action throughout the body while stationary in space. \nThe performance is co-presented with the Pittsburgh Dance Council\, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. \nTickets $19–55; visit https://trustarts.culturaldistrict.org/production/45876/stephen-petronio-company or call 412-456-6666.

SUMMARY:Cynthia Hopkins: A Living Documentary
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes back performance artist Cynthia Hopkins\, whose highly praised ensemble work\, Accidental Nostalgia\, was one of the first larger theater productions presented by the museum and the New Hazlett Theater in 2007. In stark contrast\, Hopkins returns with the stripped-down\, one-woman-show\, A Living Documentary\, in which Hopkins plays both herself and an eclectic cast of characters\, driven by a song cycle of original compositions. Ultimately\, a comedic\, no-nonsense reflection on the trials and tribulations of earning a living as a professional theater artist in the 21st century\, the show combines elements of musical comedy\, documentary\, and fiction\, and it asks a myriad of questions about the realities of artistic life in New York City. \nA Living Documentary was commissioned by New York Live Arts and made possible\, in part\, by the National Endowment for the Arts. This event is co-presented with The Pittsburgh Humanities Festival\, a project of the Humanities Center of Carnegie Mellon University and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. A Living Documentary was developed\, in part\, through residencies at The Watermill Center (in partnership with New York Arts); Bunker in Slovenia (through the Suitcase Fund); and Mount Tremper Arts.

SUMMARY:Isabella Rossellini in Green Porno
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and the Carnegie Museums of Art & Natural History welcome the iconic actress\, performer and model\, Isabella Rossellini to the Carnegie Music Hall for a special presentation of her one-woman show\, Green Porno.
