SUMMARY:Off the Wall 2012 – Henry Rollins: The Long March
DESCRIPTION:Spoken word artist\, musician\, actor\, author\, radio talk show host and iconic cultural gadfly\, Henry Rollins\, is above all else a self-described “workaholic\,” and best known as the lead singer for the intense hardcore Rollins Band and the seminal punk band Black Flag.  Rollins has written more than 20 books\, runs his own publishing company and record label 2.13.61.\, and hosts a weekly radio show on L.A.’s renowned NPR affiliate KCRW.  Rollins is also currently a regular columnist for LA Weekly\, and is hosting National Geographic’s new three-part series Animal Underworld with Henry Rollins.  Described by the New York Daily News as “some of the most provocative chit-chat around\,” Henry’s spoken word performances – “talking shows\,” as he calls them – are a seamless (yet seemingly extemporaneous) mix of humor and outrage; pop culture\, political commentary and personal anecdote; healthy skepticism and rugged optimism. \n“Diatribist\, confessor\, provocateur\, humorist\, even motivational speaker…his is an enthusiastic and engaging chatter.” \n– Washington Post

SUMMARY:Off the Wall 2012 – Young Jean Lee: We're Gonna Die
DESCRIPTION:Young Jean Lee returns to The Warhol performing with her new band\, Future Wife\, in We’re Gonna Die\, a cabaret-style evening that premiered to rave reviews in April 2011 at Joe’s Pub in New York City.  In her uniquely unnerving\, subversive and hilarious style\, Lee has created a dark song cycle with an ultimately affirming message about life’s futility. Lee and her experimental theater company have grown rapidly since 2003\, and The Warhol is pleased to continue to build the relationship after presenting Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven in 2007 and The Shipment in 2010. \n“Enormously touching …Lee purchases our hearts with her bravery’s own coin.”\n– Time Out New York

SUMMARY:Off the Wall 2012 – Mike Daisey: The Agony & Ecstasy of Steve Jobs
DESCRIPTION:The Andy Warhol Museum\, in partnership with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust\, is pleased to welcome backMike Daisey\, after his sold-out Pittsburgh debut in The Warhol’s intimate theater in 2007. Daisey’s work as a writer and commentator has been featured on NPR\, BBC\, and the New York Times Magazine\, though he is most known for his highly energetic and improvised monologues. With The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs\, Daisey\, an admitted “Apple fanboy”\, trains his patriotic criticism and moral compass on the questionable labor practices of one of the world’s most cherished companies. Ironically\, the rather analog\, un-mediated\, and minimalist form of monologue-based theater provides the haven to focus on and emotionally connect to a subject dealing with rapid technological developments and our high-tech obsessions in an increasingly digital age. \n“The master storyteller—one of the finest solo performers of his generation. What distinguishes him from most solo performers is how elegantly he blends personal stories\, historical digressions and philosophical ruminations. He has the curiosity of a highly literate dilettante and a preoccupation with alternative histories\, secrets large and small\, and the fuzzy line where truth and fiction blur. Mr. Daisey’s greatest subject is himself.”\n– The New York Times \n“Mike Daisey rides two rails—tragic comedy and patriotic outrage—that identify him as a direct descendant of Mark Twain.”\n– The Stranger

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Biennial: Gertrude’s/LOT\, Teresa Foley: The Dummy is Present
DESCRIPTION:Pittsburgh Biennial Gertrude’s/LOT artist T. Foley performs with Hector the Dummy.  In her performance\, Foley manipulates the dummy on Chatroulette\, and searches for unwitting partners online. Moving the action from the gallery space to the big screen (via projection)\, she invites the live audience to participate\, magnifying transitory online exchanges\, and taking spectators to a wholly unpredictable place. \nEasy Pieces is an ongoing series of live and recorded performances featuring T. Foley and Hector the Dummy. The artist makes use of the original virtual being — a ventriloquist dummy — to speak to the ways individuals represent themselves online. \nTwo works will be presented at The Warhol Theater on January 6\, 2012: \nOn Display (video\, color\, 7 mins)\nHector gives voice to otherwise disembodied Internet confessionals in monologues based on thousands of published men seeking women ads on craigslist. Performing the scenarios in mundane personal settings featured in posters’ photographs\, the artist animates a range of masculine display-attempts that vie to attract the attention of women online. \nThe Dummy Is Present (live performance\, 1 hour)\nIn this re-interpretation of Marina Abramović’s The Artist Is Present\, 2010\, random visitors to the Web site Chatroulette* may sit silently (or not) across from Hector the Dummy and the audience at The Warhol Theater\, for a duration of their choosing.\nIn her performance\, Foley manipulates the dummy on Chatroulette\, and searches for unwitting partners online. SUMMARY:Lilith Bailey-Kroll & Tyler Phan: Death in the Age of Bardo
DESCRIPTION:Pittsburgh Biennial: Gertrude’s/LOT artist Lilith Bailey-Kroll and Tyler Phan interpret Tibet’s 8th Century bodhisattva\, Padmasambhava’s timeless work Bardo Thödol (Liberation Through Hearing).  From its first English translation in 1927 by W.Y. Evans-Wentz\, the social and cultural implications of Bardo Thödol have transitioned from a source of research to an actual practical guide for individuals coming to terms with the inevitable\, death.  This lecture and performance is part of the 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial: Gertrude’s/LOT exhibition\, on view until January 8\, 2011.

SUMMARY:The Word of God: Voices - 30 Mosques in 30 Days: Tales from an American Ramadan Road Trip
DESCRIPTION:Ranked as one of the CNN’s top stories of 2010\, 30 Mosques in 30 Days is aphotographic essay and performance by Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq who during Islam’s holy month of Ramadan last year visited 30 mosques on an epic road trip across the United States. \nEach day during Ramadan\, the pair visited a different state stopping each evening at a different mosque to break their fasts and blog about the people they met\, the mosque they prayed in and the tasty cuisines each place had to offer. During the 13\,000 mile trip Ali and Tariq prayed inside the infamous “Ground Zero Mosque” in Manhattan\, got pulled over by a cop in Mississippi\, and visited the first mosque ever built in the U.S. in Ross\, North Dakota – a town with only 48 people in it. Along the way they met the protagonists of Dave Eggers’ bestselling Zeitoun\, Cambodian Muslim victims of the Khmer Rouge\, a Pakistani-Mormon couple\, and many\, many others\, all of whom are part of the diverse Muslim-American community. Their journey explores what it means to be Muslim in America today\, and serves as a powerful counter-narrative to the media’s image of a monolithic Islam\, receiving coverage on ABC News\, CNN\, Time\, NPR\, Fox News\, the Huffington Post and Aljazeera English.

SUMMARY:Off the Wall 2011: The Blow with Melissa Dyne
DESCRIPTION:Performing artist and pop-musician Khaela Maricich (aka The Blow) returns to The Warhol with a body of songs and a show to accompany them\, riding the border and exploring the territory between pop concert and performance piece. The current work is a collaboration with international installation artist Melissa Dyne\, who specializes in manipulating environments with the phenomena of light and sound. Moving through spaces created by Dyne’s sonic and visual layering\, Maricich works through a narrative that deals with creating demos for a certain tabloid-friendly actress who is looking to gain indie-pop cred. According to a recent New York Times review of the show at Joe’s Pub (Public Theater)\, “They were terrific\, the new songs\, believable as identity-bending pop from a fallen celebrity\, or as deeply felt parody or as chipper performance art.”
