SUMMARY:Sound Series: Soy Sos with Bri Dominque and Ras Maisha: Dub Corridor
DESCRIPTION:Our Sound Series is pleased to partner with PearlArts\, a multidisciplinary arts organization in Pittsburgh (founded by choreographer Staycee Pearl and sound designer/producer Herman Pearl)\, on a monthly summer series focused on the reggae offshoots/evolutions of dub\, roots\, dancehall\, sound system culture and beyond. Each collaboration will be a different take on these elements\, drawing from prepared materials and improvisations. \nWe welcome Soy Sos (aka Herman Pearl) and collaborators Bri Dominique and Ras Maisha for a special site specific performance\, Dub Corridor\, developed with our renovated side alley\, Silver Street\, in mind. The trio will experiment with the unique acoustics of this intimate urban alley turned patio/beer garden\, with an exploratory\, electronic\, beat-driven\, and dub-inspired set for a relaxed\, outdoor summer evening. This performance is an extension of PearlArts’ SYNCHRONIZED: with Soy Sos series. \nBri Dominique is a multi instrumental songstress originally from Westchester\, New York. She currently lives in the Pittsburgh area\, where she studies music therapy and composes as well\, mainly in orchestral form. Through experimental song writing and raw exploration of ideas\, Dominique continues to evolve into different interests constantly. While exploring electronic\, baroque pop\, alternative\, and soul genres\, she stays true to her roots in classical performance\, mainly on viola. \nRas Maisha is a rastafari reggae musician\, fine artist\, graphic designer\, and farmer born in Falmouth\, Trelawny\, Jamaica. \nHerman Pearl/Soy Sos is a sound designer\, audio engineer\, and producer. He sees sound as an actual physical force\, literally moving the air around and through us. This was impressed upon him in his early encounters with Jamaican sound system\, dub and bass culture in the late 80s. It informs everything he does from the composition\, production\, and mixing of the music to the design and configuration of the playback systems for performances. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only. Limited seating is available upon advance request. We are committed to offering inclusive\, engaging experiences for people of all abilities. To request accommodations to enhance your visit\, please contact access@warhol.org or call 412.237.8354.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Al Cerulo: Amplified Perception
DESCRIPTION:Al Cerulo was given his first pair of drumsticks by his father at the age of seven and has never looked back. He has been praised for his work as a musician and educator both nationally and internationally. Al is an advocate for the commissioning and performing of new works by both established and up-and-coming composers to help move forward and breathe new life into the art. \nAmplified Perception is a seventy-five-minute soundscape sculpted through the music of five composers whose compositional styles are each uniquely beautiful: Jude Traxler\, Eve Beglarian\, Mathew Rosenblum\, Paula Matthusen\, and Randy Gibson. Writing for a single voice\, each composer enhances the acoustic timbre of their instrument with live amplification and/or digital processing. Featuring sound design by Jude Traxler and a prelude and postlude of pre-recorded media by Cerulo and Echo Artifact\, this journey will take the listener through various sound worlds – from the ambient to periodic to unearthly.\n \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Amirtha Kidambi & Darius Jones: Angels & Demons
DESCRIPTION:We welcome longtime collaborators Amirtha Kidambi (voice) and Darius Jones (alto sax) who join sonic and compositional forces to materialize Angels & Demons\, musical adaptations of cosmological writings by iconic composer and bandleader Sun Ra. The duo formed to honor the intellectual\, literary\, and spiritual contribution of Sun Ra\, as a philosopher and teacher. Dancing between Ra’s prophetic poetic verse\, abstract phonemes and syllables\, sound\, noise\, tone\, melody\, and rhythmic interplay\, Jones and Kidambi use their unique compositional and improvisatory voices to amplify Ra’s poetry to contemporary audiences. \nAmirtha Kidambi is an educator\, activist\, and organizer\, informed by anti-racism\, decolonization\, and anti-capitalism\, and is co-founder and co-organizer of South Asian Artists in Diaspora and Musicians Against Police Brutality. She is the creative force behind Elder Ones and topped the categories of “Rising Star Vocalist”\, “Rising Star Composer”\, and “Rising Star Jazz Group” in the Downbeat Critics Poll for 2019. \nDarius Jones has created a recognizable voice as a critically acclaimed saxophonist and composer by embracing individuality and innovation in the tradition of Black music. He has been awarded the Van Lier Fellowship\, Jerome Foundation Artist-in-Residence and commission\, French-American Jazz Exchange Award\, and a Fromm Music Foundation commission from Harvard University. Jones has received acclaim for not only his studio albums featuring music and images evocative of Black Futurism\, but also for his commissioned work as a composer throughout the United States and Canada. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Screening
DESCRIPTION:MS 89 is back with a special screening of our 1995 Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant\, co-hosted by Harrison Apple (Pittsburgh Queer History Project) and former contestant Jezebel Bebbington D’Opulence (The Puerto Rican Princess of Pittsburgh). Join us for a once in a life-time community nightclub archives event\, taking place in The Warhol theater\, where the pageant played out almost 30 years ago. \nThe MS 89 series is a live and in-person only nightclub archives screening event. Community members host screenings and discussions of tapes that they had a hand in creating. Pushing back against the tendency to consume archives\, MS 89 packs together to watch and rewatch as a ritual in creating new intergenerational friendships via their shared desire for a shared past. \nThis event is made possible by a generous gift from the Dietrich Humanities Scholars Program\, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry\, and The Andy Warhol Museum. \nAbout Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame \nThe Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant was created by Raina Lampkins-Fielder (former education program coordinator) and Glenn Brown (NYC Ball Scene). With a star studded line-up of contestants and judges from Pittsburgh’s queer nightlife\, Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame tells a lesser known story of cultural meaning making spanning performers\, museum curators\, and after-dark personalities from the Steel City. The documentary footage was captured and edited by filmmaker Roberta Kenney with editing support from filmmaker Chris Ivey\, and produced in the editing bays of the former Pittsburgh Filmmakers. As a result of interviews with members of the House of D’Opulence\, Apple and Kenney connected to reintroduce this footage by donating her source tapes to the Pittsburgh Queer History Project in 2021. \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\n\n
