SUMMARY:Sound Series: slowdanger\, Michiyaya Dance & Abdu Ali: weighted sky
DESCRIPTION:weighted sky is a collaboratively built work between slowdanger\, MICHIYAYA Dance Directors Anya and Mitsuko Clarke-Verdery\, and Baltimore based sound artist Abdu Ali\, with original set pieces by Pittsburgh based sculptor Rob Hackett. The work explores the collapse of capitalism and white supremacist structures on the bodies of people\, nationally and globally. It deconstructs hussle culture and seeks to create a process of active imagining for a queer future where we can thrive. \nweighted sky was made possible by Unique Projects\, Pentacle Administrative Support Program\, the Space Upstairs\, The Warhol\, the Opportunity Fund\, the Heinz Endowment’s Small Arts Initiative\, PNC Charitable Trusts\, and the Pittsburgh Foundation A. W. Mellon Grant. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nPlease note: For your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this performance must show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination (final vaccine must be dated at least 14 days prior to the performance) or negative Covid-19 test taken within 48 hours of the performance at their time of entry with a valid ticket. An early fall afternoon and evening of live music in a relaxed and festive environment outdoors in our North Shore neighborhood. Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum on Isabella Street\, including Pastor Deryck Tines & the Lemington Chorale\, Tomberlin\, Andy Shauf\, 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, featuring Dean & Britta\, and Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500’s On Fire. \nEntrance at Federal and Isabella Streets. \nSchedule\n3 p.m. Pastor Deryck Tines & the Lemington Chorale \nWe kick off the day with a high-energy\, spiritually-energizing\, and soul-stirring set by Pastor Deryck Tines and Pittsburgh’s Lemington Chorale. Tines will lead this group of dynamic singers though a medley of gospel songs\, spirituals\, and hymns celebrating black history\, spirituality\, and soul\, from his recently released live album We Shall Overcome Someday. \n4:30 p.m. Tomberlin \nWe welcome singer/songwriter Tomberlin (aka Sarah Beth Tomberlin) for an intimate solo performance as part of tour with Andy Shauf\, supporting her latest EP Projections on Saddle Creek Records. Originally from Jacksonville\, Florida\, Tomberlin moved around a bit growing up as a result of her father’s work as a Baptist pastor. She moved to Louisville in 2017 and released her first album At Weddings\, featuring her sparse arrangements and vivid lyrics\, produced by Owen Pallett. \n6 p.m. Andy Shauf \nWe welcome the songwriter Andy Shauf\, and are pleased to reschedule his performance from June so that he and his band could be part of our Sound Series: Block Party\, as part of a tour supporting his most recent\, highly lauded album Neon Skyline on ANTI records. His music is often described as reflecting the Canadian prairie with a unique blend of hushed vocals\, vivid lyrics\, and intricately crafted arrangements\, drawing on influences such as Neil Young\, Wilco\, and Elliot Smith. \n7:30 p.m. 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, featuring Dean & Britta \nIn celebration of its 13th anniversary\, we’re thrilled to bring back\, 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests. The performance\, which consists of commissioned soundtracks by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips for a selection of Warhol’s silent film portraits\, toured extensively after its premiere in Pittsburgh in October 2008\, playing over 85 dates over eight years. The 13th anniversary tour will provide audiences with another opportunity to experience this critically lauded performance with newly digitized HD versions of the films. The project resulted in the first official release of early Warhol films on DVD\, which was produced in collaboration with Plexifilm. \n13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, a project jointly commissioned by The Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts 2008. \n9 p.m. Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500’s On Fire \nThe Warhol’s inaugural Sound Series: Block Party closes with a seamless transition from 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests to a special set of Galaxie 500’s seminal album On Fire\, performed by the same band\, featuring Dean Wareham\, Britta Phillips\, Anthony LaMarca\, and Matt Sumrow. Wareham\, who formed Galaxie 500 in 1987 and Luna in 1991\, has also recorded several albums with his wife Britta Phillips as Dean & Britta\, and beyond working with Andy Warhol’s films\, they have scored films such as The Squid & The Whale and Mistress America by Noah Baumbach. Most recently they released A Sentimental Education\, an album of covers\, and A Place of Greater Safety\, an EP of 6 instrumentals on Double Feature Records. \n\nThe Sound Series Block Party is rain or shine. Though the focus remains on Shelley’s pure voice and weaving guitar picking\, this album features levitating and ambient textures from violin and cello orchestrations of Icelandic sisters Þórdís Gerður Jónsdóttir and Sigrún Kristbjörg Jónsdóttir. Miller\, most prominently known as a founding member of Mission of Burma and for his longtime membership of Alloy Orchestra\, which showcases a different musical perspective\, blending elements of classical and rock music\, influenced by everyday phenomena as well as surrealism. This concert features Miller on electric guitar with loops\, devices and electronics\, creating a one-person orchestra for compositions that are organically structured by writings from his dream journal. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to present the online premiere of @1minworld\, featuring a recorded live performance in The Warhol’s intimate theater by performance duo\, Princess\, comprised of Alexis Gideon and Michael O’Neill (JD Samson & MEN). @1minworld is a video cycle and live performance piece about social media and our love-hate relationship with cell phone culture. Told through 15 one-minute danceable\, vivid Pop Art music videos\, this hyper-meta work is the first album built for and released exclusively on Instagram\, using the social media platform as a means for delivery as well as material for the content. This piece is also among the first to leverage—rather than mask—the absence of a live audience; at moments Princess breaks the fourth wall in ways that could only happen in an online experience.\n\n\n \n\n\nA conversation between Jose Diaz\, The Warhol’s chief curator\, Ben Harrison\, The Warhol’s curator of performing arts\, Alice Gray Stites\, 21c Museum Hotels’ chief curator\, and Princess will follow.

The new record marked a reunion with his Modern Lovers bandmate Jerry Harrison\, as producer. Richman has been performing consistently over the last 30 years\, beginning with his pioneering band\, the Modern Lovers\, in the early 1970s. DESCRIPTION:Pianists Vicki Ray and Aron Kallay of the Ray-Kallay Duo have given hundreds of world premieres in Los Angeles and across the country. The Ray-Kallay Duo is dedicated to expanding the sonic possibilities of the multiple keyboard concert\, often using two acoustic grands\, two keyboards or combinations of both. In redefining the 21st century piano duo\, they also frequently include live electronics and alternate tuning systems in their programs. \nMikroEnsemble is a new Finland-based contemporary music group specializing in microtonal music. The core of the ensemble’s instrumentation is formed by new instruments specifically designed for quarter-tone playing. The newest of these instruments is the quarter-tone piano\, built by Otso Haapamäki in 2015. Combining the lulling ambiance of shoegaze with the iconic melodies and vocal prowess of classic American country music\, outlaw cowboy\, Orville Peck croons about love and loss from the badlands of North America. “Big Sky\,” his first single\, is a described as a “campfire lullaby of Orville’s past lovers”. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Tuareg guitarist\, Mdou Moctar\, and his band who are originally from a small village in the Azawagh desert of Niger. Similar to past Sound Series Toureg bands such as Tinariwen and Imarhan\, Mdou’s music has been an underground success with an international following\, focused on blending Western blues and rock guitar sensibility with traditional West African polyrhythms. Mdou also wrote and starred in the first ever Tuareg language film\, Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red In It\, a Saharan remake of Prince’s Purple Rain\, released in 2015. Opening DJ set by Pandemic Pete.\n \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: A Night of Deep Listening\, featuring  Joe McPhee\, Claire Chase\, and Peter Evans
DESCRIPTION:Organized in collaboration with Carnegie International\, 57th Edition\, 2018\, this evening program is a musical synthesis of the exhibition-within-the-International-exhibition Dusty Groove II: Space Is a Diamond. Working in collaboration\, John Corbett\, Jim Dempsey\, and artist Josiah McElheny have presented a gallery of artifacts anchored by sculptural portraits of four maverick musicians of the twentieth century: John Cage\, Pauline Oliveros\, Harry Partch\, and Sun Ra\, plus an homage to the “cosmic explorations” of the twenty-first century musical visionary\, Joe McPhee. The performance brings together Joe McPhee himself\, with Claire Chase\, and Peter Evans\, three giants of contemporary of music\, in turn inspired by these four historical figures\, and a revival of composer Lucia Dlugoszewski’s “Space is a Diamond”\, performed for the first time in over 40 years. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

With a unique aesthetic that blends elements of gospel music of his youth and more minimal and ambient composition\, Wise had this to say about the lyrical nature of the new record: “I remember growing up there was language for how men and women interact…I hate to say it\, but I think there is still a lot of shame around two black men dating and loving on each other and I was very aware of that. While working on soil\, i was exploring and trying to make sense of my needs and my love language… I’m excited about the way things naturally come out of my body. I am always going to embrace discipline and streamlining. But I’m in a space at the moment where I don’t need or desire the corset. It’s time for expansiveness.” \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Turning Jewels into Water with special guest Soy Sos
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Haitian electronic music composer/percussionist/turntablist Val Jeanty\, and percussionist/composer\, Ravish Momin with their new project Turning Jewels into Water\, on a tour supporting their debut full-length recording\, A Map of Absences\, on FPE Records. Their collaboration\, rooted in improvisation shaped by ritual\, evokes the esoteric realms of the creative subconscious. Drawing from the voodoo religion\, Val recreates the ancient rhythm and pulse of Haiti through digital beats\, while Momin\, whose own musical background is rooted Indian\, North African\, and Middle-eastern traditions\, has developed an original blend of electro-acoustic beats\, drawing together the improvisational traditions in Jazz and Indian music. Together they explore the capabilities of new technologies to create a seamless blend of multiple electronic and acoustic instruments. Herman “Soy Sos” Pearl\, sym collaborator Sadie Powers (bass)\, and Kelsey Robinson (vocals) will open up the night with atmospherics in a beat-driven sound exploration.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome composer\, producer\, and guitarist\, Rafiq Bhatia (member of Son Lux) on a tour supporting his latest album Breaking English on Anti Records. Breaking English is an evening-length live performance\, featuring Bhatia’s latest work for his electroacoustic trio transformed into an immersive multimedia experience by visual artist Michael Cina and video artist Hal Lovemelt. The electroacoustic trio includes Ian Chang (Son Lux\, Joan As Policewoman) on electronic and acoustic drums and Jackson Hill (Xenia Rubinos) on bass and synthesizers. Following up on Bhatia’s two previous Sound Series performances\, as guitarist with Son Lux\, Breaking English pushes further at the boundaries of sound art and improvisation\, while blending elements of both organic and mechanical\, intimate and distant. As Bhatia explains\, “At times I use electronic processing to destabilize\, e.g. twisting stereotypes of Indian music into noise beyond recognition.” WILLS opens the evening.  \nBreaking English was co-commissioned by The Jazz Gallery\, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music Series\, Newfields: A Place for Nature & the Arts\, and the Toledo Museum of Art.  \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.
