If you have any questions\, please give us a call at 412.237.8300. \nWe welcome back the highly influential singer-songwriter\, Jonathan Richman\, on a tour supporting his latest Blue Arrow Records release Sa\, an album largely inspired by Indian ragas. The new record marked a reunion with his Modern Lovers bandmate Jerry Harrison\, as producer. Richman has been performing consistently over the last 30 years\, beginning with his pioneering band\, the Modern Lovers\, in the early 1970s. The band’s minimalist approach and forthright songs were influenced by The Velvet Underground and are often referred to as “protopunk” and credited for laying the groundwork for punk and new wave. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\nPlease note that Jonathan Richman’s performance begins at 8:00 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Beyond Microtonal Music Festival featuring Ray-Kallay Duo and MikroEnsemble
DESCRIPTION:Pianists Vicki Ray and Aron Kallay of the Ray-Kallay Duo have given hundreds of world premieres in Los Angeles and across the country. The Ray-Kallay Duo is dedicated to expanding the sonic possibilities of the multiple keyboard concert\, often using two acoustic grands\, two keyboards or combinations of both. In redefining the 21st century piano duo\, they also frequently include live electronics and alternate tuning systems in their programs. \nMikroEnsemble is a new Finland-based contemporary music group specializing in microtonal music. The core of the ensemble’s instrumentation is formed by new instruments specifically designed for quarter-tone playing. The newest of these instruments is the quarter-tone piano\, built by Otso Haapamäki in 2015. In addition\, MikroEnsemble’s original instrument pallet includes a quarter-tone accordion\, quarter-tone guitar\, quarter-tone flute and quarter-tone clarinet\, along with violin and cello.\n \n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome Eko Chamber Collective\, featuring an eclectic roster of Pittsburgh-based musicians including Herman Pearl\, aka Soy Sos\, (electronics)\, Brittany Trotter (flute)\, Anqwenique Kinsel (voice)\, Sadie Powers (bass)\, Paul Thompson (bass)\, and Brian Riordan (live processing). The collective is a live electro-acoustic ensemble that utilizes spatialized performance techniques that cater to reverberant spaces. With the use of a multi-channel sound system\, the group creates an immersive sound environment by collaborating with the acoustics and architecture of spaces rather than working against them\, and this site-specific performance has been developed with our entrance space in mind. Audience members are encouraged to move about the performance space\, as the ensemble’s compositions are created to lend themselves to unique sonic experiences\, which unfold differently depending on one’s vantage point. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only. DESCRIPTION:We welcome singer\, songwriter\, cellist\, and multi-instrumentalist Leyla McCalla to our theater. McCalla was born in New York City to Haitian immigrant parents\, studied cello performance and chamber music at New York University\, then moved to New Orleans where she became captivated by Louisiana Creole music and culture. She joined the Carolina Chocolate Drops string band\, appearing on the group’s Leaving Eden album\, before focusing on a solo career and debut album\, Vari-Colored Songs\, a tribute to Langston Hughes\, in 2013\, which was named album of the year by both the London Times and Songlines magazine. She has collaborated with an impressive and varied roster of artists such as Marc Ribot\, Rhiannon Giddens\, and Louis Michot of the Lost Bayou Ramblers.\n \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

Barnett became a rising star in 2012 with her thoughtful lyrics and unique garage rock-infused\, folk-pop style which quickly garnered praise from Pitchfork\, with a Best New Track mention for Avant Gardener in 2013. A South Florida native\, born to Ecuadorian immigrants and based in Brooklyn\, his upbringing provides essential elements to his songwriting\, including his consistently bilingual lyrics in English and Spanish. Helado Negro\, beyond the persona\, serves as a platform for a nexus of sound\, performance\, and video that create his unique sensibility that blends experimental ambient composition and melodic hooks into a hypnotic avant-pop experience. Lange was also recently awarded a United States Artists Fellow in Music and he’s recipient of a Grants to Artists award in Music from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Belle & Sebastian to the opulent Carnegie Music Hall\, six years after co-presenting their Pittsburgh debut in 2013. Since emerging out of Glasgow\, Scotland in ’96\, the band has been hugely influential in the broad realm of indie-pop\, with multiple albums in the UK top 20. Their most recent output\, a trio of EPs titled How To Solve Our Human Problems\, Parts 1-3 was a return to an earlier format\, allowing the music to emerge organically on EP sessions. New music in the form of a soundtrack to Simon Bird’s upcoming film\, Days of The Bagnold Summer\, due for release later this year. Still regarded as “One of the most thoughtful and compelling bands out there” (The Times)\, Belle & Sebastian are soon to head to The Mediterranean to launch their four-day festival at sea\, The Boaty Weekender. The Montreal-based trio\, Men I Trust\, open the show. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Organized in collaboration with Carnegie International\, 57th Edition\, 2018\, this evening program is a musical synthesis of the exhibition-within-the-International-exhibition Dusty Groove II: Space Is a Diamond. Working in collaboration\, John Corbett\, Jim Dempsey\, and artist Josiah McElheny have presented a gallery of artifacts anchored by sculptural portraits of four maverick musicians of the twentieth century: John Cage\, Pauline Oliveros\, Harry Partch\, and Sun Ra\, plus an homage to the “cosmic explorations” of the twenty-first century musical visionary\, Joe McPhee. The performance brings together Joe McPhee himself\, with Claire Chase\, and Peter Evans\, three giants of contemporary of music\, in turn inspired by these four historical figures\, and a revival of composer Lucia Dlugoszewski’s “Space is a Diamond”\, performed for the first time in over 40 years. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

Their collaboration\, rooted in improvisation shaped by ritual\, evokes the esoteric realms of the creative subconscious. Drawing from the voodoo religion\, Val recreates the ancient rhythm and pulse of Haiti through digital beats\, while Momin\, whose own musical background is rooted Indian\, North African\, and Middle-eastern traditions\, has developed an original blend of electro-acoustic beats\, drawing together the improvisational traditions in Jazz and Indian music. Together they explore the capabilities of new technologies to create a seamless blend of multiple electronic and acoustic instruments. DESCRIPTION:We welcome songwriter\, guitarist and producer Jonathan Wilson for a special acoustic performance in the Museum’s intimate theater\, on a tour supporting his fourth album\, Rare Birds on Bella Union. Wilson has recently been touring as a guitarist with Roger Waters\, and also produced and recorded Waters’ Is This the Life We Really Want? at his Five Star Studio in L.A.\, which featured guest appearances by Lana Del Rey\, Father John Misty\, Lucius\, and Laraaji. Wilson is often credited as being at the nexus of the Laurel Canyon music scene revival and has recorded and been a guitarist for wide range of artists such as Dawes\, Erykah Badu\, Phil Lesh\, Elvis Costello\, Jackson Browne\, and Will Oldham. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Adam Green’s Aladdin
DESCRIPTION:We welcome musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green for a unique evening featuring a solo acoustic performance of songs from his second feature film Adam Green’s Aladdin\, followed by a full screening of the film. Shot entirely on papier-mache sets designed by Green\, this immersive fantasy film stars an eclectic cast including Macaulay Culkin\, Natasha Lyonne\, Alia Shawkat\, Jack Dishel\, and Francesco Clemente – with Green playing Aladdin. In Green’s take on this classic tale\, the lamp is a 3-D printer\, the Princess is a decadent socialite\, the planet gets a sex-change\, and its population prints out an analogue version of the Internet. Regarding the connectivity between his music\, art and filmmaking\, Green says “If you listen to my songs\, you see they’re kind of cartoonish. I try to make songs like my paintings. When creating my movie\, I approached the script like it was a song.” Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \n \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.
