DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Belle & Sebastian to the opulent Carnegie Music Hall\, six years after co-presenting their Pittsburgh debut in 2013. Since emerging out of Glasgow\, Scotland in ’96\, the band has been hugely influential in the broad realm of indie-pop\, with multiple albums in the UK top 20. Their most recent output\, a trio of EPs titled How To Solve Our Human Problems\, Parts 1-3 was a return to an earlier format\, allowing the music to emerge organically on EP sessions. New music in the form of a soundtrack to Simon Bird’s upcoming film\, Days of The Bagnold Summer\, due for release later this year. DESCRIPTION:Organized in collaboration with Carnegie International\, 57th Edition\, 2018\, this evening program is a musical synthesis of the exhibition-within-the-International-exhibition Dusty Groove II: Space Is a Diamond. Working in collaboration\, John Corbett\, Jim Dempsey\, and artist Josiah McElheny have presented a gallery of artifacts anchored by sculptural portraits of four maverick musicians of the twentieth century: John Cage\, Pauline Oliveros\, Harry Partch\, and Sun Ra\, plus an homage to the “cosmic explorations” of the twenty-first century musical visionary\, Joe McPhee. The performance brings together Joe McPhee himself\, with Claire Chase\, and Peter Evans\, three giants of contemporary of music\, in turn inspired by these four historical figures\, and a revival of composer Lucia Dlugoszewski’s “Space is a Diamond”\, performed for the first time in over 40 years. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

With a unique aesthetic that blends elements of gospel music of his youth and more minimal and ambient composition\, Wise had this to say about the lyrical nature of the new record: “I remember growing up there was language for how men and women interact…I hate to say it\, but I think there is still a lot of shame around two black men dating and loving on each other and I was very aware of that. While working on soil\, i was exploring and trying to make sense of my needs and my love language… I’m excited about the way things naturally come out of my body. I am always going to embrace discipline and streamlining. But I’m in a space at the moment where I don’t need or desire the corset. It’s time for expansiveness.” \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome Haitian electronic music composer/percussionist/turntablist Val Jeanty\, and percussionist/composer\, Ravish Momin with their new project Turning Jewels into Water\, on a tour supporting their debut full-length recording\, A Map of Absences\, on FPE Records. Their collaboration\, rooted in improvisation shaped by ritual\, evokes the esoteric realms of the creative subconscious. Drawing from the voodoo religion\, Val recreates the ancient rhythm and pulse of Haiti through digital beats\, while Momin\, whose own musical background is rooted Indian\, North African\, and Middle-eastern traditions\, has developed an original blend of electro-acoustic beats\, drawing together the improvisational traditions in Jazz and Indian music. Together they explore the capabilities of new technologies to create a seamless blend of multiple electronic and acoustic instruments. Herman “Soy Sos” Pearl\, sym collaborator Sadie Powers (bass)\, and Kelsey Robinson (vocals) will open up the night with atmospherics in a beat-driven sound exploration.

Breaking English is an evening-length live performance\, featuring Bhatia’s latest work for his electroacoustic trio transformed into an immersive multimedia experience by visual artist Michael Cina and video artist Hal Lovemelt. The electroacoustic trio includes Ian Chang (Son Lux\, Joan As Policewoman) on electronic and acoustic drums and Jackson Hill (Xenia Rubinos) on bass and synthesizers. Following up on Bhatia’s two previous Sound Series performances\, as guitarist with Son Lux\, Breaking English pushes further at the boundaries of sound art and improvisation\, while blending elements of both organic and mechanical\, intimate and distant. DESCRIPTION:We welcome musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green for a unique evening featuring a solo acoustic performance of songs from his second feature film Adam Green’s Aladdin\, followed by a full screening of the film. Shot entirely on papier-mache sets designed by Green\, this immersive fantasy film stars an eclectic cast including Macaulay Culkin\, Natasha Lyonne\, Alia Shawkat\, Jack Dishel\, and Francesco Clemente – with Green playing Aladdin. In Green’s take on this classic tale\, the lamp is a 3-D printer\, the Princess is a decadent socialite\, the planet gets a sex-change\, and its population prints out an analogue version of the Internet. Regarding the connectivity between his music\, art and filmmaking\, Green says “If you listen to my songs\, you see they’re kind of cartoonish. I try to make songs like my paintings. When creating my movie\, I approached the script like it was a song.” Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \n \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome back The Magnetic Fields to Pittsburgh\, on their three-city limited 50 Song Memoir tour\, which chronicles the 50 years of songwriter Stephin Merritt’s life with one song per year. The show is performed over two nights (songs 1–25 on night one\, songs 26–50 on night two). The band is led by Stephin Merritt\, who is widely considered one of the most talented songwriters of this generation. Beyond writing and recording numerous albums\, Merritt has also written songs for the books of Lemony Snicket\, composed music for stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline\, and was the subject of the feature documentary Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields. \n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Fleet Foxes with special guest Amen Dunes
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Fleet Foxes on a tour supporting their latest record\, Crack-Up (Nonesuch Records). It’s the Seattle-based band’s third album\, released last summer\, after a six-year break since their GRAMMY-nominated record Helplessness Blues (2011). Their self-titled debut in 2008 influenced the indie folk/rock landscape\, and garnered much praise and “Best of” list mentions from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. All songs on Crack-Up were written by Robin Pecknold (guitarist/vocalist) and were co-produced by Pecknold and bandmate and collaborator\, Skyler Skjelset. Amen Dunes opens the show.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Imarhan
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Imarhan from Tamanrasset\, Southern Algeria. Imarhan\, meaning ‘the ones I care about\,’ deftly blend repeating guitar melodies with pan-African rhythms\, which draw on the traditional Tuareg music of Southern Sahara\, African ballads\, and modern pop and rock influences. The band’s debut album\, Imarhan\, is intent on dismantling the ideas western listeners have about popularized Tuareg music. The band’s lead vocalist and guitarist Iyad Moussa Ben Abderahmane (aka Sadam) also performs with the pioneering Tuareg band Tinariwen (who performed at The Warhol in 2014). \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.
