DESCRIPTION:After a long break\, Teen Sensory Silent Disco is back! Put on your most comfortable party outfit and join our welcoming staff for a sensory-friendly evening of dancing\, socializing\, and artmaking. This event is planned specifically for and with individuals with autism spectrum disorders and those with sensory sensitivities. A live DJ will spin dance classics and our adjustable wireless headphones allow participants to choose their own volume levels or opt out. There will be an enclosed sensory friendly area on the first floor where partygoers can decompress or connect in a calm manner. The basement studio will be open for guests to enjoy silkscreen printing and other art projects. SUMMARY:Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Screening
DESCRIPTION:MS 89 is back with a special screening of our 1995 Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant\, co-hosted by Harrison Apple (Pittsburgh Queer History Project) and former contestant Jezebel Bebbington D’Opulence (The Puerto Rican Princess of Pittsburgh). Join us for a once in a life-time community nightclub archives event\, taking place in The Warhol theater\, where the pageant played out almost 30 years ago. \nThe MS 89 series is a live and in-person only nightclub archives screening event. Community members host screenings and discussions of tapes that they had a hand in creating. Pushing back against the tendency to consume archives\, MS 89 packs together to watch and rewatch as a ritual in creating new intergenerational friendships via their shared desire for a shared past. \nThis event is made possible by a generous gift from the Dietrich Humanities Scholars Program\, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry\, and The Andy Warhol Museum. \nAbout Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame \nThe Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant was created by Raina Lampkins-Fielder (former education program coordinator) and Glenn Brown (NYC Ball Scene). With a star studded line-up of contestants and judges from Pittsburgh’s queer nightlife\, Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame tells a lesser known story of cultural meaning making spanning performers\, museum curators\, and after-dark personalities from the Steel City. The documentary footage was captured and edited by filmmaker Roberta Kenney with editing support from filmmaker Chris Ivey\, and produced in the editing bays of the former Pittsburgh Filmmakers. As a result of interviews with members of the House of D’Opulence\, Apple and Kenney connected to reintroduce this footage by donating her source tapes to the Pittsburgh Queer History Project in 2021. \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Industrial Grit and Graffiti: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public conversation featuring artists Carlos Mare and Michael Walsh and moderated by Chris McGinnis\, director and chief curator of Rivers of Steel Arts. Mare and Walsh are artists-in-residence at Rivers of Steel Arts in a week-long residency and workshop that explores the intersectionality of graffiti and metal arts. The residency’s scope also considers the connections with residents of the adjacent Monongahela Valley communities—communities whose character has been shaped by both their industrial and post-industrial heritage. In this artist talk\, Mare and Walsh\, two pioneers of the graffiti sculpture movement\, will share their experiences in the residency and reflect on the national graffiti sculpture movement and history. \n\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m.\nMasking is optional for this performance.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Our Sensory Friendly Morning Workshops are developed specifically so that teens and young adults (ages 13-24) with sensory sensitivity needs can experience the museum in a way that works for them. These workshops begin before the museum is open to the general public\, and we explore the galleries as a group before applying Warhol’s techniques to our own work in our underground studio. Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of internationally touring artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum on Isabella Street\, featuring Mexican Institute of Sound\, Sudan Archives\, and headlined by Kurt Vile and the Violators. \nSchedule\n5:30 p.m. Mexican Institute of Sound \nMexican Institute of Sound\, led by Camilo Lara\, blends his eclectic interests in Cumbia and a range of Latin American genres with infectious beat-driven arrangements and a DIY/punk and high energy aesthetic. The latest album Distrito Federal (2021) garnered much critical praise\, including NPR’s best albums of the year list\, and features collaborations with Dan The Automator (Gorillaz) a Graham Coxon (Blur)\, Duckwrth\, BIA\, Cuco and Banda Misteriosa.  \n7 p.m. Sudan Archives \nSudan Archives is a unique solo performer who has emerged as an inventive avant-garde violinist and experimental beatmaker who loops and layers her violin and vocals to create a new minimalist hybrid approach to blending classical\, West African\, and hip hop and R&B influences. She’s captivated audiences at festivals such as Coachella and Pitchfork with her hybrid sound\, sharing stages with St. Vincent\, Ibeyi\, and Michael Kiwanuka.  \n8:30 p.m. Kurt Vile and the Violators \nWe welcome back Philadelphia-based songwriter and guitarist Kurt Vile as headliner of our Block Party. With inspiration ranging from John Prine to Sonic Youth\, Vile has been honing his unique songwriting craft and inventive guitar style since the early days of co-founding War on Drugs with Adam Granduciel in 2005\, before focusing on his solo career and his band the Violators with a series of releases leading up to broader exposure with the album Wakin on a Pretty Daze on Matador Records in 2013. SUMMARY:Warhol\, Club Culture\, and the Black Celebrity Image
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Andy Warhol’s Social Network: ‘Interview\,’ Television and Portraits\, join us for a panel conversation moderated by author\, music historian\, and DJ Adrian Loving\, featuring legendary New York artist and filmmaker Fab 5 Freddy\, and Rory Trifon\, president of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. In this conversation the panel discusses Warhol’s participation in club culture beginning in the late 1970s and his representation of Black celebrities ranging from Grace Jones and Aretha Franklin to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The panel unpacks Warhol’s social ties\, his engagement with Black music culture\, and interest in exclusive entertainment circles throughout the 1980s. \nAdrian Loving\nAdrian Loving is a visual arts educator at Georgetown Day HS in Washington\, D.C.\, cultural historian\, and DJ – curating public programming\, exhibitions and performing internationally. His 2021 book Fade to Grey: Androgyny\, Style and Art in 80s Dance Music focuses on the intersection of art\, gender and dance music. Loving will appear in the forthcoming PBS documentary Making Black America in Fall 2022. \nFab 5 Freddy\nFred Brathwaite\, aka Fab 5 Freddy emerged in the late 1970’s as a New York City graffiti artist who was one of the first to exhibit his paintings internationally. Along with friends and contemporaries\, Futura 2000\, Keith Haring\, Lee Quiñones and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Fab was a key player in New York’s 1980’s downtown cultural scene instrumental in elevating graffiti into a disruptive movement that would eventually give birth to street art. In addition to his visual art\, Fab co-produced\, starred in and composed the music for the cult classic film\, Wild Style and went on to direct music videos for numerous hip hop stars. From the late 1980’s into the mid-90’s he was the original host of YO! MTV Raps\, the groundbreaking TV show that took hip hop culture global. Today he continues to make and exhibit his visual art and produce and direct projects for film and television. \nRory Trifon\nRory Trifon is the nephew of Richard Bernstein and President of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. The Estate of Richard Bernstein is the heir to the legal rights and interests of the Artist; the mission of which is to honor him by maintaining and enhancing his legacy and to make his art more accessible to audiences throughout the world. Trifon formally created the estate in 2016. He has since produced the book Richard Bernstein Starmaker: Andy Warhol’s Cover Artist (Rizzoli\, 2018) and led the Estate’s business relations with museums\, galleries\, publishers\, and licensing operations with brands such as Coach\, Loewe\, Henzel Studio\, and Flavorpaper. DESCRIPTION:For the generation that inspired Warhol\, Pop Generation is a program exclusively for adults\, age 65 and over\, which takes place multiple times a year and features guided tours of The Warhol’s collection and special exhibitions\, as well as a reception with complimentary refreshments. Join one of our knowledgeable arts educators for an in-depth\, 90-minute tour through the galleries followed by an informal discussion in The Warhol entrance space. This month\, the theme will be Collaboration and Friendship: Learn more about the many fascinating individuals who contributed to Warhol’s art and the collaborative aspect of his creative process. SUMMARY:Sensory Friendly Morning Workshop for Teens and Young Adults
DESCRIPTION:Our Sensory Friendly Morning Workshops are developed specifically so that teens and young adults (ages 13-24) with sensory sensitivity needs can experience the museum in a way that works for them. These workshops begin before the museum is open to the general public\, and we explore the galleries as a group before applying Warhol’s techniques to our own work in our basement studio. Attendance is limited to 20 people. We provide fidgets\, noise cancelling headphones\, and other accommodations. A visual schedule and other orientation materials will be provided in the weeks before each workshop. Visitors can explore our seven floors of gallery space\, including the special exhibition\, Paola Pivi: I Want It All. Just around the corner from the museum\, visit our new Print Lounge to get hands on and experiment with silkscreen printing. Teens are welcome to join student-led gallery tours at 11:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. each day and can also learn about Carnegie Museums’ new Teen Membership program. \nSnacks and refreshments available for teens and children. \nInquire onsite for public transportation reimbursement for teens and children. SUMMARY:Sound Series: Matmos with special guest Jeff Carey
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back the genre-defying\, sonic experimentalists\, Matmos (M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel)\, who make music out of the sounds of objects\, animals\, people\, and actions. They have collaborated with a wide array of artists including Rachel’s\, So Percussion\, Nico Muhly\, Alter Ego\, People Like Us\, Kronos Quartet\, and Bjork. They will return to our intimate theater on a tour supporting their latest album Regards​/​Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer via Thrill Jockey. Inspired by the Polish experimental composer Bogusław Schaeffer\, the album features contributions from harpist Úna Monaghan\, multi-instrumentalist Ulas Kurugullu\, electronic artist Will Schorre and Horse Lords’ Max Eilbach.
