DESCRIPTION:The Sensory Friendly Teen Studio Workshop is a workshop developed specifically so that teens (ages 13–20) with sensory sensitivity needs can experience the museum in a way that works for them. Attendees will explore the galleries as a group\, learn about Warhol’s silkscreen process\, and then move to our underground studio where they will apply those techniques to create their own work.   \nRegistration is capped at 15 attendees. SUMMARY:Industrial Grit and Graffiti: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public conversation featuring artists Carlos Mare and Michael Walsh and moderated by Chris McGinnis\, director and chief curator of Rivers of Steel Arts. Mare and Walsh are artists-in-residence at Rivers of Steel Arts in a week-long residency and workshop that explores the intersectionality of graffiti and metal arts. The residency’s scope also considers the connections with residents of the adjacent Monongahela Valley communities—communities whose character has been shaped by both their industrial and post-industrial heritage. In this artist talk\, Mare and Walsh\, two pioneers of the graffiti sculpture movement\, will share their experiences in the residency and reflect on the national graffiti sculpture movement and history. \n\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m.\nMasking is optional for this performance.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Please note: The Sound Series: Block Party is sold out and there will not be any tickets sold at the door. \nWe’re pleased to present our second annual Sound Series: Block Party featuring an autumn evening of live music in a relaxed and festive environment outdoors\, as part of The Pop District\, in our North Shore neighborhood. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on site\, along with hands-on t-shirt\, tote bag\, or poster making. Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of internationally touring artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum on Isabella Street\, featuring Mexican Institute of Sound\, Sudan Archives\, and headlined by Kurt Vile and the Violators. \nSchedule\n5:30 p.m. Mexican Institute of Sound \nMexican Institute of Sound\, led by Camilo Lara\, blends his eclectic interests in Cumbia and a range of Latin American genres with infectious beat-driven arrangements and a DIY/punk and high energy aesthetic. The latest album Distrito Federal (2021) garnered much critical praise\, including NPR’s best albums of the year list\, and features collaborations with Dan The Automator (Gorillaz) a Graham Coxon (Blur)\, Duckwrth\, BIA\, Cuco and Banda Misteriosa.  \n7 p.m. Sudan Archives \nSudan Archives is a unique solo performer who has emerged as an inventive avant-garde violinist and experimental beatmaker who loops and layers her violin and vocals to create a new minimalist hybrid approach to blending classical\, West African\, and hip hop and R&B influences. She’s captivated audiences at festivals such as Coachella and Pitchfork with her hybrid sound\, sharing stages with St. Vincent\, Ibeyi\, and Michael Kiwanuka.  \n8:30 p.m. Kurt Vile and the Violators \nWe welcome back Philadelphia-based songwriter and guitarist Kurt Vile as headliner of our Block Party. With inspiration ranging from John Prine to Sonic Youth\, Vile has been honing his unique songwriting craft and inventive guitar style since the early days of co-founding War on Drugs with Adam Granduciel in 2005\, before focusing on his solo career and his band the Violators with a series of releases leading up to broader exposure with the album Wakin on a Pretty Daze on Matador Records in 2013. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Andy Warhol’s Social Network: ‘Interview\,’ Television and Portraits\, join us for a panel conversation moderated by author\, music historian\, and DJ Adrian Loving\, featuring legendary New York artist and filmmaker Fab 5 Freddy\, and Rory Trifon\, president of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. In this conversation the panel discusses Warhol’s participation in club culture beginning in the late 1970s and his representation of Black celebrities ranging from Grace Jones and Aretha Franklin to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The panel unpacks Warhol’s social ties\, his engagement with Black music culture\, and interest in exclusive entertainment circles throughout the 1980s. \nAdrian Loving\nAdrian Loving is a visual arts educator at Georgetown Day HS in Washington\, D.C.\, cultural historian\, and DJ – curating public programming\, exhibitions and performing internationally. His 2021 book Fade to Grey: Androgyny\, Style and Art in 80s Dance Music focuses on the intersection of art\, gender and dance music. Loving will appear in the forthcoming PBS documentary Making Black America in Fall 2022. \nFab 5 Freddy\nFred Brathwaite\, aka Fab 5 Freddy emerged in the late 1970’s as a New York City graffiti artist who was one of the first to exhibit his paintings internationally. Along with friends and contemporaries\, Futura 2000\, Keith Haring\, Lee Quiñones and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Fab was a key player in New York’s 1980’s downtown cultural scene instrumental in elevating graffiti into a disruptive movement that would eventually give birth to street art. In addition to his visual art\, Fab co-produced\, starred in and composed the music for the cult classic film\, Wild Style and went on to direct music videos for numerous hip hop stars. From the late 1980’s into the mid-90’s he was the original host of YO! MTV Raps\, the groundbreaking TV show that took hip hop culture global. Today he continues to make and exhibit his visual art and produce and direct projects for film and television. \nRory Trifon\nRory Trifon is the nephew of Richard Bernstein and President of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. The Estate of Richard Bernstein is the heir to the legal rights and interests of the Artist; the mission of which is to honor him by maintaining and enhancing his legacy and to make his art more accessible to audiences throughout the world. Trifon formally created the estate in 2016. He has since produced the book Richard Bernstein Starmaker: Andy Warhol’s Cover Artist (Rizzoli\, 2018) and led the Estate’s business relations with museums\, galleries\, publishers\, and licensing operations with brands such as Coach\, Loewe\, Henzel Studio\, and Flavorpaper. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Welsh songwriter Cate Le Bon and her unique and abstract pop vision on a tour supporting her latest album\, Pompeii\, on Mexican Summer Records. As a follow up to her Mercury Prize nominated album Reward (2019)\, and composed entirely alone during the pandemic in an “uninterrupted vacuum\,” the new album was recorded largely by herself with long-term collaborator and co-producer Samur Khouja in Cardiff\, Wales. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Japanese experimental sound artist\, FUJI||||||||||TA (pronounced Fujita) on his first U.S. tour. His unique practice utilizes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. In 2009\, Fujita hand fabricated a pipe organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Designed to create a soundscape rather than function as a more traditional musical instrument\, he has added a water element\, with sound synthesized water tanks. The music blends water sounds from multiple aquariums alongside his pipe organ and voice. Since 2006 he has had many solo performances and collaborative works with musicians\, including ∈Ｙ ∋ (Boredoms)\, Akio Suzuki\, Keiji Haino and Koichi Makigami. SUMMARY:Adil Mansoor: Amm(i)gone with Operation Sappho DJ’s
DESCRIPTION:Amm(i)gone\, an adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone\, is an apology to and from a mother. Creator and performer Adil Mansoor explores queerness\, the afterlife\, and obligation using canonical texts\, teachings from the Quran\, and audio conversations between him and his mother. Since discovering his queerness\, Mansoor’s mother has turned towards her faith in an attempt to save her son in the afterlife. In an effort towards healing\, Mansoor has invited his mother to join him as dramaturg and co-conspirator. In reading\, discussing\, and translating various adaptations of the source play\, together they mine Greek tragedy\, Islamic traditions\, and their own memories to create an original performance locating love across faith. Can prayer substantiate care? Can care manifest as artistic methodology and inquiry? Can Mansoor and his mother contend with Antigone’s fate?
