SUMMARY:Sound Series: Adam Green’s Aladdin
DESCRIPTION:We welcome musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green for a unique evening featuring a solo acoustic performance of songs from his second feature film Adam Green’s Aladdin\, followed by a full screening of the film. Shot entirely on papier-mache sets designed by Green\, this immersive fantasy film stars an eclectic cast including Macaulay Culkin\, Natasha Lyonne\, Alia Shawkat\, Jack Dishel\, and Francesco Clemente – with Green playing Aladdin. In Green’s take on this classic tale\, the lamp is a 3-D printer\, the Princess is a decadent socialite\, the planet gets a sex-change\, and its population prints out an analogue version of the Internet. Regarding the connectivity between his music\, art and filmmaking\, Green says “If you listen to my songs\, you see they’re kind of cartoonish. I try to make songs like my paintings. When creating my movie\, I approached the script like it was a song.” Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \n \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Rob Mazurek’s Farnsworth Scores
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique evening of experimental sound composition inspired by mid-century modern architecture\, featuring composer\, cornetist\, and improviser\, Rob Mazurek. Through a commission from the Graham Foundation\, Mazurek has composed The Farnsworth Scores as an experimental film and musical composition in collaboration with filmmaker Lee Anne Schmitt\, intended to capture the interaction between humans\, nature\, and architecture at Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Farnsworth House. \n\nMazurek has previously performed as part of The Warhol’s Sound Series with his ensembles São Paulo Underground and Black Cube SP\, and also leads and composes for other ongoing ensembles\, including Exploding Star Orchestra\, Chicago Underground Duo\, and  Pharoah & The Underground (featuring Pharoah Sanders). \nProduction of The Farnsworth Scores was supported by a generous grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. \nDoors open at 6 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome back The Magnetic Fields to Pittsburgh\, on their three-city limited 50 Song Memoir tour\, which chronicles the 50 years of songwriter Stephin Merritt’s life with one song per year. The show is performed over two nights (songs 1–25 on night one\, songs 26–50 on night two). The band is led by Stephin Merritt\, who is widely considered one of the most talented songwriters of this generation. Beyond writing and recording numerous albums\, Merritt has also written songs for the books of Lemony Snicket\, composed music for stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline\, and was the subject of the feature documentary Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields. \n

All songs on Crack-Up were written by Robin Pecknold (guitarist/vocalist) and were co-produced by Pecknold and bandmate and collaborator\, Skyler Skjelset. Amen Dunes opens the show.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome Cornelius (aka Japanese multi-instrumentalist Keigo Oyamada) to the Carnegie Lecture Hall. Beginning with his 1997 release Fantasma on Matador Records\, Cornelius (the name is an homage to the Planet of the Apes) gained much critical praise as the “modern day Brian Wilson” for his lush orchestral/pop arrangements and quickly became an in-demand producer working with artists such as Beck\, Bloc Party\, and MGMT. Oyamada’s forays into scoring films include Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and the anime mega-film Ghost in the Shell Arise\, as well as being a key performer in Yoko Ono’s reformed Plastic Ono Band.

DESCRIPTION:The second concert of the Beyond Microtonal Musical Festival and Symposium features the composer/curator of the Harry Partch Instrumentarium Charles Corey and violinist/improviser Luke Fitzpatrick performing Partch’s Barstow and Li Po Settings and the powerhouse quartet LOADBANG performing works by Brook\, Beglarian\, Edgerton and others. \nThis season’s Festival and Symposium focuses on the theme of “Cultural Roots/Cultural Intersections” and explores compelling microtonal music that travels across cultural boundaries.Through three days of concerts and symposia\, Beyond addresses the nature and current status of “microtonal music” and especially its relationship to World Music as well as the diversity within our own community.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome back the highly influential indie rock band Luna\, on a tour supporting their latest release on Double Feature Records\, A Sentimental Education\, consisting of 10 covers by an impressive array of artists such as Fleetwood Mac\, The Cure\, Mercury Rev\, David Bowie\, and Bob Dylan. The Warhol has been fortunate to develop a strong relationship with members Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips\, through their involvement with the performance/film commissions 13 Most Beautiful\, Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests and Exposed: Songs for Unseen Warhol Films. The latter project also included Eleanor Friedberger (Fiery Furnaces) who opens the show with a solo performance. \nDoors open at 7 p.m.
