SUMMARY:Sound Series: Imarhan
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. All ticket sales will be refunded. \nWe welcome Imarhan from Tamanrasset\, Southern Algeria. Imarhan\, meaning ‘the ones I care about\,’ deftly blend repeating guitar melodies with pan-African rhythms\, which draw on the traditional Tuareg music of Southern Sahara\, African ballads and modern pop and rock influences. The band’s debut album\, Imarhan\, is intent on dismantling the ideas western listeners have about popularized Tuareg music. The band’s lead vocalist and guitarist Iyad Moussa Ben Abderahmane (aka Sadam)\, also performs with the pioneering Tuareg band Tinariwen (who performed at The Warhol in 2014). \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: An Evening with Joan Shelley
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Louisville\, Kentucky-based singer/songwriter Joan Shelley. She returns to the museum’s intimate theater with collaborator Nathan Salsburg supporting her latest release\, a self-titled album on No Quarter Records. The new record\, produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco\, takes a different approach than her acclaimed last release Over and Even\, which NPR’s Bob Boilen declared “one of the most beautiful records of the year.” The new record still reflects the influence of American and British folk revivalists Sandy Denny and Vashti Bunyan\, though Shelley also channels Michael Hurley-inspired melodies. Guitarist James Elkington\, opens the evening. \nDoors open at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Dungen
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes the eclectic Swedish quartet Dungen\, who deftly blend elements of psychedelic rock\, folk\, free jazz\, and ambient sounds. On this occasion\, the band performs its latest (and first all-instrumental) album Häxan (“The Witch”) as the soundtrack to Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926)\, which is considered to be the oldest surviving full-length animated feature film. Produced by Matthias Glavå\, Häxan was sequenced separately from the linear narrative of the film.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Kid Koala: Nufonia Must Fall
DESCRIPTION:Part film\, part puppetry\, part live music\, and 100% award-winning storytelling\, Nufonia Must Fall is a multidisciplinary performance piece created by internationally renowned Canadian DJ and musician Kid Koala and directed by KK Barrett (Being John Malkovich and Her). Critics have tagged it as “modern primitive multimedia” because it mixes live puppet theater\, video\, a live string quartet\, and a nest of electric instruments to tell the story of a tone-deaf and completely unemployable robot who falls in love with its human creator\, a brilliant but unwitting scientist. Get ready for romancing the Anthropocene. Nufonia Must Fall is fun for the whole family. \nThis performance is co-commissioned by BAM\, Luminato Festival\, Adelaide Festival\, Banff Centre\, Internationales Sommerfestival Hamburg\, Roundhouse UK\, and Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival Groningen.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is pleased to partner with Calliope to welcome Louisville\, Kentucky-based singer/songwriter Joan Shelley for the first time to its intimate theater. Her latest release\, Over and Even\, a collaboration with guitarist Nathan Salsburg\, was declared by NPR’s Bob Boilen to be “one of the most beautiful records of the year.” Influenced by both American and British folk revivals with artists such as Sandy Deny and Vashti Bunyan\, Shelley has been charting her own unique course with striking lyrics and warm and genuine vocal delivery\, coming off recent performances with Michael Hurley\, and being joined on stage by fellow Kentuckian Bonnie Prince Billy. \nThis performance is co-presented with Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Yo La Tengo with special guest Lambchop
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes back Yo La Tengo\, one of the most respected and unwavering bands in independent music. For more than 30 years and 14 albums\, the group has charted its own course. As mentioned in a Stereogum review\, “In the best possible sense\, Yo La Tengo can feel less like a band and more like a beloved national trust.” Similar to Television\, which played the Carnegie Music Hall last fall\, Yo La Tengo sits prominently on the trajectory of bands influenced by the Velvet Underground and its impact on rock music in the 60s. \nThis unique evening also features the highly praised Nashville band Lambchop (led by songwriter Kurt Wagner)\, which has deftly subverted and honored traditions of country music\, for almost 20 years. On this rare and special occasion\, both bands pull from their extensive catalogs\, as well as perform new material and collaborate on each other’s songs.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: An Evening with Dawn of Midi
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Dawn of Midi\, a Brooklyn-based acoustic ensemble made up of Aakaash Israni from India on double bass\, Amino Belyamani from Morocco on piano\, and Qasim Naqvi from Pakistan on drums. The trio met at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles in 2006 and developed a unique musical aesthetic that can sound deceptively electronic and computer-generated\, involving repetition of phrases and entrancing rhythms. On the trio’s record Dysnomia (released by Erased Tapes)\, they favor composition over improvisation and employ rhythms from North and West African folk traditions.
