SUMMARY:Sound Series: Perfume Genius\, with special guest Jenny Hval
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Perfume Genius\, aka Seattle native Mike Hadreas\, who gained immediate recognition with his 2010 debut album Learning\, which was called “an album of rare\, redemptive beauty…one of the most uniquely endearing and quietly forceful debut albums of recent years” by Drowned In Sound. \nHadreas’s touring performance supports his distinctly different second album Too Bright\, produced by Portishead’s Adrian Utley\, and employing a rawer\, visceral\, and darker sensibility with a full band as opposed to solo piano. \nThe highly innovative Norwegian artist and songwriter Jenny Hval opens the show.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Jace Clayton – The Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes back Jace Clayton\, a.k.a. DJ /rupture\, who leads an ensemble work conceived for twin pianos\, live electronics\, and voice\, that brings fresh insight to the artistic legacy of Julius Eastman – the mercurial gay African American composer who mixed canny minimalist innovation with head-on political provocation. The Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner comprises new arrangements and interpretations of a selection of Eastman’s piano compositions. As Clayton uses his own custom-designed ‘Sufi Plug Ins’ software to live-process the pianos of David Friend and Emily Manzo\, he also intersperses musical vignettes – performed by neo-Sufi vocalist Arooj Aftab – to lend context and nuance to the composer’s saga\, which was cut short in 1990 at age 49. \nThe Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner has been performed at Bang on a Can Marathon\, MoMA PS1 Liquid Music at St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, Cincinnati Art Center\, University of Texas Austin\, REDCAT\, and several other venues. \n“This is a difficult\, self-annihilating temperament to pay proper tribute to. On The Julius Eastman Memory Depot\, Jace Clayton—better and more-often known as DJ/rupture —goes about it exactly the right way. . .The result honors the intentions behind Eastman’s trickster spirit to the point that Clayton and Eastman seem very much to be making this music together in real time” \n– Jayson Greene\, Pitchfork \n“A captivating project that constitutes a powerful homage by one bold figure to another.” \n– Ron Schepper\, Textura

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Battle Trance
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes the genre-defying saxophone quartet Battle Trance (comprised of Travis Laplante\, Matthew Nelson\, Jeremy Viner\, Patrick Breiner) on a tour supporting their debut release\, Palace of Wind\, on New Amsterdam Records. Performing primarily the music of member Travis Laplante\, the quartet crosses boundaries and exists loosely within realms of contemporary classical music\, avant-garde jazz\, black metal\, ambient\, and world music\, the new record challenges conventions of the saxophone as an ensemble instrument. The sonic vocabulary of the quartet has developed through techniques such as circular breathing\, allowing them to build continuous\, hypnotic waves of sound and intricate textures. \n \n“[Laplante’s music] might change your life\, indefinably.” \n-‐The Chicago Tribune

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Chancellor Warhol\, with special guest\, DJ Soy Sos
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes the appropriately named indie hip hop artist\, Chancellor Warhol (aka Antonio Boleyjack)\, from Nashville\, TN.  Since his first solo album\, Japanese Lunchbox\, in 2010\, Boleyjack has been developing his rap style and a sound that blends influences from alternative rock and electronic music.  With an overall interest in intersections of art\, cinema\, fashion and music within pop culture\, he cites Andy Warhol as a strong influence and inspiration. \nChancellor Warhol was particularly intrigued by our travelling exhibition\, Warhol Live\, which examines the role of performance in the artist’s life and work.  He comes to The Warhol supporting his latest release\, Paris Is Burning\, and has recently played major festivals such as Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, and Sundance.  Local sound artist Herman Pearl (aka DJ Soy Sos)\, will open the show.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Band of Horses with special guest Midlake
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is pleased to partner with PromoWest North Shore and Opus One Productions to present Band of Horses as an outdoor performance at Stage AE. Since emerging out of Seattle in 2004\, led by songwritersBen Bridwell and Mat Brooke\, the band has been refining and morphing its country-rock sound\, which often draws comparisons to former label mates\, Iron & Wine\, on Sub Pop Records. In 2010\, the group shifted to Columbia Records where they have released two records\, Infinite Arms and Mirage Rock. The latter saw the band take a more straight-ahead rock approach\, produced by Glyn Johns who has most notably worked with the Rolling Stones and The Who. \nCo-presented wtih PromoWest North Shore & Opus One Productions

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Oneohtrix Point Never: Featuring video artist Nate Boyce\, with special guest Dutch E Germ
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Brooklyn-based artist and electronic music composer\, Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never) to its entrance space\, on a tour supporting his latest release R Plus Seven on Warp Records.  Lopatin has built his live soundscapes at The Museum of Modern Art and Tate Britian\, and on this tour\, beyond The Warhol\, he will perform at the Wexner Center in Columbus and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.  Lopatin is often praised for his delicate balance of the experimental and the accessible\, particularly reflected in his 2011 release\, Replica\, built around samples of television commercials; that the New Yorker referred to as “music that gently triggers a series of images and feelings\, none of which you can name and all of which seem entirely common.” \nArtist and collaborator\, Nate Boyce\, will provide live visual accompaniment.  Doors open at 7:30pm.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Tinariwen
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Tinariwen\, a Tuareg group from the Sahara Desert in northern Mali. With a name meaning “empty places\,” reflecting their land of origin\, the group formed in 1979 in rebel camps of Colonel Gaddafi\, having been forced from their nomadic lifestyle into involuntary military service. \nSwapping traditional lutes and shepherd’s flutes for electric guitars and drums\, the group has developed their own unique style that blends elements of western blues/rock\, African tribal chants and Middle Eastern traditional music. From this hybrid style\, they craft songs dealing with issues such as political awakening\, problems of exile\, and repression of their people. The band signed to the U.S. label Anti Records in 2010\, and has toured extensively\, performing at major festivals such as WOMAD and Bonnaroo. \nThe evening will begin with a DJ set by Pete Spynda (Pandemic) when doors open at 7:30.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol presents an evening with Scout Niblett to launch the fall 2013 Sound Series.  Niblett makes her first appearance at The Warhol in support of her latest release “It’s Up to Emma” on Drag City Records.  Originally from Nottingham\, England\, and often drawing comparisons to PJ Harvey and Cat Power\, Niblett has developed a signature spartan song structure with a unique sonic range\, often performing solo on electric guitar\, or with a drummer (as is the case with this appearance).
