DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Chicago-based singer-songwriter\, Angel Olsen for the first time to the Museum’s theater\, on a tour supporting her latest release\, Half Way Home\, on Jagjaguwar Records. Olsen has collaborated with Emmett Kelly and his collective\, the Cairo Gang\, adding her unique vocal harmonies and textures to the Bonnie “Prince” Billy releases The Wonder Show of the World (2010) and Wolfroy Goes to Town (2011). Just three years into a solo career\, Olsen has found a distinct voice with intimate arrangements that fall comfortably between the darker side of 50’s/60’s country crooners and her indie\, alt-country/folk contemporaries. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol presents an evening with Scout Niblett to launch the fall 2013 Sound Series.  Niblett makes her first appearance at The Warhol in support of her latest release “It’s Up to Emma” on Drag City Records.  Originally from Nottingham\, England\, and often drawing comparisons to PJ Harvey and Cat Power\, Niblett has developed a signature spartan song structure with a unique sonic range\, often performing solo on electric guitar\, or with a drummer (as is the case with this appearance). This latest release is widely considered her most emotionally raw\, personal and stark.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Psychic TV / PTV3
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Psychic TV / PTV3 for a rare performance at New Hazlett Theater. Fronted by performance artist\, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge\, Psychic TV (born out of Industrial Music pioneers\, Throbbing Gristle) made highly innovative and provocative music from the early 80’s to mid-90’s\, blending elements of psychedelia and dance with Industrial sounds (known as “hyperdelic”).  In 2003\, drummer Edley ODowd of the legendary NYC rock band Toilet Boys persuaded Genesis to rekindle her rock spirit and Psychic TV\, which became known as “PTV3”. \nIn celebration of the 30th anniversary of Psychic TV’s acclaimed second album\, Dreams Less Sweet\, this special performance will be preceded by the debut screening of Psychic TV: Dreams Less Sweet\, which features the work 47 artists\, creating a collective film set to the album. Running time approximately 45 minutes. \nFor this special performance\, the band will feature Genesis Breyer P-Orridge -vocals\, violin; Edley ODowd – drums\, samples; Alice Genese – bass; Jeff ‘Bunsen’ Berner – guitar; Jess Stewart – keyboards\, and John Jackson – violin.  Live projections by Jeanne Angel & Sam Zimmerman.  The performance is presented in connection with the exhibition\, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge: S/HE IS HER/E on view June 15 – September 15\, 2013 at The Warhol.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Mason Bates and IonSound
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol partners with The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to present a program of new electro-acoustic music\, (including two pieces from their current resident composer\, Mason Bates)\, all performed by the dynamic Pittsburgh-based ensemble\, IonSound.  Bates’ “Red River” conjures a journey down the length of the Colorado River\, with cascading water figuration flowing into quicksilver electronica rhythms\, and his “From Amber Frozen” offers an indigenous approach to a string quartet.  Anna Clyne’s “Paint Box” zooms inside the cello\, sonically and imaginatively\, while Marcos Balter’s “Vision Mantra” stretches out a slow-motion epiphany in an ambient space.  The program culminates in Martin Matalon’s stunning new score for the classic Luis Buñuel film “Un Chien Andalou”.  Mason Bates is the Music Alive Composer-in-Residence with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Music Alive is a national residency program of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol presents the Pittsburgh premiere of the ambient and minimalistic electro-acoustic music of Icelandic composer and musician Valgeir Sigurðsson.  His third full-length album\, Architecture of Loss (which also served as the score for a Stephen Petronio ballet)\, features like-minded\, young composer Nico Muhly on piano\, whose career was launched on Sigurðsson’s indie-classical label\, Bedroom Community.  Recently named one of NPR’s “Top 100 Composers Under 40” he is arguably best known for his collaborations; producing and engineering work by fellow Icelander Björk and Bonnie “Prince” Billy.

Will Oldham)\, through a collaboration with the Carnegie Museum of Art\, in conjunction with the exhibition\, Cory Arcangel: Masters.  Don’t miss this unique evening with the Drag City Records stalwart who\, over the past quarter-century\, has made an idiosyncratic journey through\, and an indelible mark on\, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema. Oldham will release the special holiday 7” Christmas Eve Can Kill You with Dawn McCarthy and a new full length record is planned for early ’13.  Opening the show is Title TK (artist Cory Arcangel\, musician and writer Alan Licht\, and artist and curator Howie Chen)\, self-described as “a banter-prone band” that has been referred to as “a cross between David Antin and Spinal Tap”.  And Licht also edited the recently published autobiography\, Will Oldham on Bonnie “Prince” Billy. \nDawn McCarthy & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy “Christmas Eve Can Kill You” from Drag City on Vimeo. \nIn anticipation of their forthcoming holiday single Christmas Eve Can Kill You\, old friends and collaborators Dawn McCarthy and Will Oldham present you with a gift: a video shot by Lara Miranda during the track’s Nashville recording sessions produced by David Ferguson at Butcher Shop Studio\, as well as footage depicting the spirit of the project from McCreary County\, KY. From the Seeger Sisters to Mariah Carey\, Elvis to Sinatra\, from Johnny Cash to Merle Haggard; there is a remarkably strong tradition of fa-la-la-ing in popular music–to say nothing of the rich tradition of the holiday music video. Yet this is definitely not what one expects to see in a holiday music video–there’s no snow\, no presents\, no sacrificial goose or other consumable indulgences; but rather the tenets of what a pre-capitalist Christmas looks like. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is thrilled to welcome Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel\, to the opulent Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. As central figure of the highly influential band Neutral Milk Hotel (NMH)\, Mangum has had a profound impact over the past two decades on indie folk/rock music\, largely due to his most recognized NMH record\, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.  Released in 1998 on Merge Records\, it’s still widely considered a cult classic album and has served to bring further exposure to a group of like-minded musicians\, known as the Elephant 6 collective (also including bands such as Olivia Tremor Control\, Apples In Stereo) in Athens\, GA\, (the college town made famous by R.E.M.).  Just this year\, Mangum has performed at the Coachella Festival and guest curated the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in Minehead\, UK.  The Warhol is proud to present his first headlining solo show in Pittsburgh.  Tall Firs (Dave Mies and Aaron Mullan) on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! Records\, and the experimental folk sounds of Briars of North America\, open the show.

The band is led by Stephin Merritt\, considered one of the most talented songwriter’s of his generation. Beyond writing and recording numerous albums\, Merritt has also written songs for the books of Lemony Snicket\, composed music for stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline\, and was the subject of the feature documentary Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields. The band is on tour supporting their tenth album\, Love at the Bottom of the Sea\, which marks the return to Merge Records\, which released their break-out 3 CD collection 69 Love Songs\, after three releases on Nonesuch. Emma Straub\, author of Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures and Other People We Married\, opens the show with a solo reading.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is genuinely proud to present the 75th performance celebration of 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, marking it’s return to Pittsburgh after premiering at the Byham Theater in October 2008. The project\, which features a selection of Warhol’s four-minute silent film portraits with commissioned soundtracks by Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips (formerly of Luna and Galaxie 500)\, was jointly commissioned by The Warhol and The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the 2008 Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts. Taking the form of a multi-media concert\, the project has been consistently touring internationally since January ’09 and continues to except offers into 2014. Some tour highlights have included the Allen Room at Lincoln Center\, the Los Angeles Film Festival\, Sydney Opera House and Teatro Versace in Milan. \n\n\nOverall\, however\, watching the screen tests gives the same effect as listening to 13 Most Beautiful: it’s hard to imagine one without the other\, a testament to how considered 13 Most Beautiful is. Perhaps more meaningful to fans of either Warhol or Wareham and Phillips\, it is nonetheless to be respected as a true achievement. \nPopMatters

Her first full length album was 2011’s “Tragedy” (Leaving Records)\, inspired by Euripides’ play Hippolytus\, followed by Ekstasis\, released  March 2012 on RVNG Intl. \nThe Garment District\, the new project of multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Baron\, formerly of Brooklyn’s The Ladybug Transistor\, opens the show. Jennifer recently released the album\, Melody Elder\, on Iowa City-based Night-People. Her new 7″\, being released in September on the French label\, La Station Radar\, will feature a remix of her song “Nature-Nurture” done by legendary British musician/producer Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3\, Spectrum\, EAR).

His powerful yet fragile vocals are a particularly striking aspect of his minimalist folk-pop compositions\, rife with melodic hooks. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is pleased to present An Evening with The Psychedelic Furs at the Carnegie Lecture Hall in Oakland. Led by the smoky vocals and poetic lyrics of songwriter and front man Richard Butler\, The Psychedelic Furs emerged out of the late 70’s UK punk scene and made their debut on the U.S. album charts with 1981’s Talk Talk Talk. One of the singles from that album\, Pretty in Pink\, would become a bona-fide teenage anthem after being re-recorded for the platinum-selling soundtrack of the 1986 John Hughes film of the same name. After seven studio albums with other hits such as Love My Way\, Heaven\, and The Ghost In You\, the band took a hiatus through most of the 90’s and resumed touring in 2000.

This ensemble\, comprised of former Syracuse students\, includes Wes Miles – (vocals)\, Milo Bonacci (guitar)\, Alexandra Lawn (cello)\, Mathieu Santos (bass) and Rebecca Zeller (Violin) who met and formed the band in college and have since relocated to New York City. Collectively they create a unique blend of new wave influenced indie rock that melds taut rhythms with lush chamber pop\, subtle psychedelia and infectious melodies. Pittsburgh-based rock quartet 1\,2\,3 opens the show.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and Carnegie Museum of Art welcome Dan Zanes & Friends for a not-to-be-missed family concert and dance party at the Carnegie Lecture Hall! Referred to simply by People Magazine as “The crown prince of contemporary kids’ music” and hailed by Time Magazine as one of the leading “Stars of Kindie Rock”\, Zanes and his group bring a genuine\, gracious\, and home-spun yet modern sensibility to a wide array of classic folk tunes. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique evening of ambient music with A Winged Victory For the Sullen\, the new collaboration between Stars of the Lid member Adam Wiltzie and composer Dustin O’Halloran. Wiltzie\, who performed with Stars of Lid in the Warhol Theater in 2008\, returns with his latest project for this site-specific performance in the Carnegie Museum of Art’s sonically dynamic Hall of Sculpture. The duo recorded their album (on Kranky Records) in large acoustic spaces\, utilizing 9ft grand pianos\, a string quartet\, French horn and bassoon\, juxtaposed with a wash of guitar melodies.
