SUMMARY:Darrell Thorne at The Warhol
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Good Friday evening of queer dramatic fantasy\, excess\, and opulence infused with storytelling by celebrated performance artist\, Darrell Thorne. Darrell will present a new live performance followed by a discussion with local artist Heidi Wiren Bartlett. \nDarrell Thorne (b. 1976\, Branson\, Missouri) lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York. He enjoys exploring the many dualities and contradictions that exist in all facets of society\, utilizing fantasy\, camp\, and beauty (and plenty of mirrors) to reflect on what unites and divides us. Through song\, spoken word\, movement\, and dance\, coupled with highly detailed costume and makeup\, Darrell invites viewers to be transported and elevated without sacrificing entertainment. A lover of ritual\, iconography\, fantasy\, and storytelling\, Darrell attempts to channel all these elements through costuming and paint on his body\, coupled with live performance. He has exhibited and performed at the Park Avenue Armory\, SFMOMA\, Lincoln Center\, Brooklyn Academy of Music\, Chashama\, New York Academy of Art\, Helsinki Night of Arts\, The Smithsonian\, Rubulad\, The Mexico City Cabaret Festival\, and received an NEA grant for his six week performative installation Under Glass and In Color. \n\nMasks will be optional for this performance.\nNotice for all buyers – By attending an in-person event at any of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh\, you and any guests agree to voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 and agree not to hold any presenting entities\, artists\, and the venue; or any of their affiliates\, directors\, officers\, employees\, agents\, contractors\, or volunteers liable for any illness or injury.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Ata Kak with special guest DJ Pandemic Pete
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Ata Kak\, the mysterious\, underground Ghanaian electronic/rap/highlife icon\, for a rare appearance as part of a North American tour performing his cult classic Obaa Sima cassette\, originally self-released (and overlooked) in Ghana in 1994. It was also the inspiration for American musicologist Brian Shimkovitz’s blog Awesome Tapes From Africa launched in 2002\, and the cassette was eventually released as an LP in 2015. Ata Kak’s unique sound has been described as a hybrid of highlife\, rap\, funk\, hip-hop\, and electronica\, presented with the sweaty passion of a Prince record and the lo-fi recording charm of early Chicago house music. Local world music DJ Pandemic Pete opens the evening.\n \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only. Limited seating is available upon advance request. We are committed to offering inclusive\, engaging experiences for people of all abilities. To request accommodations to enhance your visit\, please contact access@warhol.org or call 412.237.8354.\nMasking is optional for this performance.\nPlease note: For your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this performance must show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination (final vaccine must be dated at least 14 days prior to the performance) at their time of entry with a valid ticket. Proof of vaccination can be shown via the physical card\, a photo of your card\, or digital vaccination passport apps. Guests who do not follow posted safety guidelines or instructions from staff will be asked to leave the premises. Failure to comply with this policy or rude or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated. Please see our Visitor Conduct Policy for more information.\nNotice for all buyers – By attending an in-person event at any of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh\, you and any guests agree to voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 and agree not to hold any presenting entities\, artists\, and the venue; or any of their affiliates\, directors\, officers\, employees\, agents\, contractors\, or volunteers liable for any illness or injury.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Da Capo Chamber Players
DESCRIPTION:The Da Capo Chamber Players have been hailed by The New Yorker as a “distinguished ensemble…at the center of the New York new-music scene for forty-five years” (May 2016). Winner of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award early in its trajectory (1973)\, the ensemble is about to enter its 50th season. It is a five-member “Pierrot” ensemble (flute\, clarinet\, violin\, cello and piano). The internationally acclaimed group has worked closely with today’s most respected composers\, building a heritage of present-day American chamber music drawn from an enormous spectrum of styles. \nKnown for their unique and dedicated attention to every work\, the Da Capo Chamber Players dynamic performances are consistent with the highest musical standards found in performances of traditional repertoire. A further very important goal is to bring exciting American music to other destinations around the world\, and to present music of global cultures for American audiences. \nThis program provides a perfect snapshot of the Da Capo Chamber Players mission in action\, presenting works composed for the ensemble by Tania León\, Shulamit Ran\, and Shen Yiwen along with music by Lei Liang\, Eric Moe\, and George Walker.\n \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\nPlease note: For your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this performance must show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination (final vaccine must be dated at least 14 days prior to the performance) at their time of entry with a valid ticket. Anxieties about the future and questions concerning the sustainability of the planet and its inhabitants have never felt more urgent. Participating artists: Imani Dennison\, Fang Tianyu\, Thomas Allen Harris\, Pedro Neves Marques\, Joan Michel\, Su Yu-Hsin\, Wang Mowen\, and Zheng Yuan.  \nBarbara London is a New York-based curator and writer who founded the video-media exhibition and collection programs at The Museum of Modern Art\, where she worked between 1973 and 2013. SUMMARY:Last Look with Lucia Hierro and Jessica Beck: Marisol and Warhol Take New York
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the closing of the exhibition Marisol and Warhol Take New York\, Jessica Beck\, Milton Fine curator of art\, joins conceptual artist Lucia Hierro for a conversation in the galleries to discuss Marisol’s life\, work\, and legacy. Exploring the exhibition together\, Beck and Hierro bring contemporary perspectives to Marisol’s practice and unpack her influence on the 1960’s New York art world in addition to her continued relevance today. \nLucia Hierro has worked with the Pop aesthetic since her early years at art school and infuses personal narrative and cultural identity into the Pop tradition. Her work is a reminder that Pop is a contemporary genre that continues to engage new artists and address issues of contemporary life.  \nVisitors can convene in The Warhol entrance space at 2 p.m. where they will be ushered to the entrance of the exhibition on the fourth floor.  \nLucia Hierro (b. 1987) is a Dominican American conceptual artist born and raised in New York City\, Washington Heights/Inwood\, and currently based in the South Bronx. Hierro’s practice\, which includes sculpture\, digital media\, and installation\, confronts twenty-first century capitalism through an intersectional lens. She received a BFA from SUNY Purchase (2010) and an MFA from Yale School of Art (2013). Hierro’s work has been exhibited at venues including the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco\, Jeffrey Deitch Gallery (Los Angeles)\, Elizabeth Dee Gallery (New York)\, Latchkey Projects (New York)\, Primary Projects (Miami)\, Sean Horton Presents (Dallas)\, and Casa Quien in the Dominican Republic. Her works reside in the collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami\, the JP Morgan & Chase Collection\, Progressive Art Collection\, and the Rennie collection in Vancouver\, among others. \nIn the spring of 2021\, Hierro will exhibit in ESTAMOS BIEN: LA TRIENAL 20/21\, El Museo del Barrio’s (NY) first national large-scale survey of Latinx contemporary art featuring more than 40 artists from the US and Puerto Rico. In June of 2021 Hierro will be the subject of a solo exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield\, CT titled Marginal Costs\, which will be accompanied by an exhibition catalog featuring an essay by Amy Smith-Stewart\, the exhibition’s curator. \n\nPlease note: For your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this event must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and mouth. SUMMARY:Art in Context: Expanding Art History
DESCRIPTION:Out of an abundance of caution\, Art in Context: Expanding Art History has been canceled. \nWhose legacy lives on? Join artists and scholars for a dynamic conversation exploring the visibility of female-identified Latinx art and artists in the canons of art and culture in the contemporary United States. Inspired by the life and work of Marisol\, this conversation will feature author Angie Cruz\, artist Lucia Hierro\, and art historian Ana María Reyes alongside moderator Jennifer Josten of the University of Pittsburgh. \nBorn in Paris to Venezuelan parents\, Marisol (Maria Sol Escobar) held a central position in the New York art scene and international Pop movement in the 1960s. Over time\, however\, she was written out of the white male-dominated narratives of art history\, overshadowed by artists like Andy Warhol\, Roy Lichtenstein\, and Claes Oldenburg. Marisol and Warhol Take New York seeks to reclaim the importance of her practice; reframe the strength\, originality\, and daring nature of her work; and reconsider her as one of the leading figures of the Pop era. This Art in Context discussion will explore how contemporary female-identified United States Latinx artists\, critics\, and historians are constructing alternate art historical narratives and shifting the balance of power in the art world and beyond. Registration is required.  \n\nDoors open at 6:45 p.m.\nPlease note: For your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this event must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and mouth. We reserve the right to require that those in attendance who do not follow safety guidelines or instructions from our staff will be asked to leave the premises. SUMMARY:Counterbalance: Redefining the Archive
DESCRIPTION:In coordination with the exhibition Marisol and Warhol Take New York\, join us for a night of film\, conversation\, and music. Alisha Wormsley\, a Pittsburgh-based artist\, has curated a selection of experimental artist films to celebrate the often-overlooked place of female filmmakers in film history. Inspired by Marisol’s narrative of great acclaim during her lifetime and the subsequent erasure of her place from art history\, Wormsley selected films from six artists\, including Akosua Adoma Owusu\, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz\, Cauleen Smith\, Malakai\, Nan Collymore\, and Kite\, who are making important contributions to reimagining the archive and the advancement of experimental film. The evening includes an introduction from Jessica Beck\, Milton Fine curator of art and organizer of the exhibition\, an introduction to each film by Wormsley and a screening of each film. The night will conclude with music by Pittsburgh-based DJ\, Jessica Fuquay. SUMMARY:Reel Q LGBTQ+ Film Festival: Workhorse Queen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 36th annual Reel Q LGBTQ+ film festival at The Warhol! Reel Q is the longest running film festival in the Pittsburgh region and the sixth oldest LGBTQ+ film festival in the entire world.   \nWatch the award-winning documentary Workhorse Queen\, followed by a panel discussion with director Angela Washko\, stars Mrs. Kasha Davis\, Mr. Davis (Steven Levins)\, and Ambrosia Salad\, moderated by John Musser (Veronica Bleaus). The screening will be followed by a free reception with Jellyfish DJs\, a cash bar\, and live drag performances by The Hot Boys (Anna Azizzy\, Sienna Cittadino\, BB Kenda)\, Akasha L. Van Cartier\, Dixie Surewood\, Ambrosia Salad (Rochester)\, and Mrs. Kasha Davis (RuPaul’s Drag Race). \nAbout Workhorse Queen\nBy day\, Ed Popil worked as a telemarketer in Rochester\, New York for 18 years. By night\, he transformed into drag queen Mrs. Kasha Davis\, a 1960’s era housewife trying to liberate herself from domestic toil through performing at night in secret – a homage to Ed’s mother. After seven years of auditioning to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race\, Ed Popil was finally cast onto the tv show and thrust into a full-time entertainment career at the late age of 44. In addition to following Popil’s life and career before and after being cast onto RuPaul’s Drag Race\, the film focuses on the growing divide between members of a small town drag community–those who have been on television\, and those who have not. \n\nDoors open at 6:45 p.m.\nPlease note: Per CDC Guidelines\, for your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this event must wear a face mask that covers both the nose and mouth. We reserve the right to require that those in attendance who do not follow safety guidelines or instructions from our staff will be asked to leave the premises. The project resulted in the first official release of early Warhol films on DVD\, which was produced in collaboration with Plexifilm. \n13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, a project jointly commissioned by The Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts 2008. \n9 p.m. Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500’s On Fire \nThe Warhol’s inaugural Sound Series: Block Party closes with a seamless transition from 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests to a special set of Galaxie 500’s seminal album On Fire\, performed by the same band\, featuring Dean Wareham\, Britta Phillips\, Anthony LaMarca\, and Matt Sumrow.
