DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes the original and intricate compositions of Zammuto\, which marks the third visit to the museum’s stage by Nick Zammuto\, formerly of the experimental\, electro-acoustic\, sound collage duo\, The Books. After making four albums with cellist Paul de Jong as The Books\, Zammuto is a departure\, expanding to a quartet which includes a churning yet precise and calculated rhythm section and prominent vocals with a myriad of ethereal effects. Lymbyc Systym\, an instrumental duo of comprised of brothers Jared and Michael Bell\, open the show.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Julia Holter with special guest The Garment District
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is pleased to partner with the VIA Music & New Media Festival 2012\, to present theLos Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Julia Holter in the museum’s intimate theater. Holter’s lush compositions and overall ambient aesthetic blurs the boundaries between\, and falls evenly within\, the broad categories of indie music\, modern composition\, and electronic music. Her first full length album was 2011’s “Tragedy” (Leaving Records)\, inspired by Euripides’ play Hippolytus\, followed by Ekstasis\, released  March 2012 on RVNG Intl. \nThe Garment District\, the new project of multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Baron\, formerly of Brooklyn’s The Ladybug Transistor\, opens the show. Jennifer recently released the album\, Melody Elder\, on Iowa City-based Night-People. Her new 7″\, being released in September on the French label\, La Station Radar\, will feature a remix of her song “Nature-Nurture” done by legendary British musician/producer Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3\, Spectrum\, EAR).

Mazurek\, who has collaborated with a varied roster of musicians and bands including Jim O’Rourke\, Bill Dixon\, Pharoah Sanders and Stereolab\, returns to The Warhol\, from his appearance last fall with his trio Starlicker.

DESCRIPTION:The eclectic Seattle-based folk singer/songwriter Damien Jurado comes to The Warhol’s intimate theater on a tour supporting his latest release\, Maraqopa\, on Secretly Canadian Records. Since his solo debut on Sub Pop Records in 1997\, Jurado has amassed a strong catalogue in the indie-folk and roots rock realms inspired and influenced by singular songwriters such as Neil Young\, Bob Dylan\, Lou Reed\, and Randy Newman. His powerful yet fragile vocals are a particularly striking aspect of his minimalist folk-pop compositions\, rife with melodic hooks. The delicate and haunting melodies of JBM (Jesse Marchant) open the show.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: An Evening with The Psychedelic Furs
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is pleased to present An Evening with The Psychedelic Furs at the Carnegie Lecture Hall in Oakland. Led by the smoky vocals and poetic lyrics of songwriter and front man Richard Butler\, The Psychedelic Furs emerged out of the late 70’s UK punk scene and made their debut on the U.S. album charts with 1981’s Talk Talk Talk. One of the singles from that album\, Pretty in Pink\, would become a bona-fide teenage anthem after being re-recorded for the platinum-selling soundtrack of the 1986 John Hughes film of the same name. After seven studio albums with other hits such as Love My Way\, Heaven\, and The Ghost In You\, the band took a hiatus through most of the 90’s and resumed touring in 2000.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes the minimalist\, psychedelic-pop sounds of the Brooklyn-based quartet\, Bear in Heaven\, on tour supporting their latest release I Love You\, It’s Cool on Dead Oceans. The bands first full length release\, Red Bloom of the Boom in 2007 on Hometapes initially drew comparisons to bands such as Radiohead\, Animal Collective\, and Can. Their second album\, Beast Rest Forth Mouth\, garnered the band much critical praise and a showcase spot at that the 2009 CMJ festival in New York. The band’s bassist\, Adam Wills\, has also performed with noted minimalist composers\, Jonathan Kane and his February project as well as Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Trio.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique evening of ambient music with A Winged Victory For the Sullen\, the new collaboration between Stars of the Lid member Adam Wiltzie and composer Dustin O’Halloran. Wiltzie\, who performed with Stars of Lid in the Warhol Theater in 2008\, returns with his latest project for this site-specific performance in the Carnegie Museum of Art’s sonically dynamic Hall of Sculpture. The duo recorded their album (on Kranky Records) in large acoustic spaces\, utilizing 9ft grand pianos\, a string quartet\, French horn and bassoon\, juxtaposed with a wash of guitar melodies.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and Carnegie Museum of Art welcome Malian virtuoso picker and musical visionary\, Bassekou Kouyate\, to the Carnegie Lecture Hall stage for his Pittsburgh debut. Kouyate leads the group Ngoni Ba\, featuring four ngonis (an ancestor of the banjo\, also referred to as a “spike lute”) all played by family members. Blurring traditional lines between West African and American blues and roots music\, Kouyate has performed with Bonnie Raitt\, Bono\, Taj Mahal and banjo maverick Bela Fleck. The group’s second CD I Speak Fula is out now on Sub Pop Records affiliate\, Next Ambience.

DESCRIPTION:Join is for a unique evening of new jazz with Starlicker\, a trio comprised of Rob Mazurek (cornet)\, John Herndon (percussion)\, and Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone). This Chicago-based trio has an intense\, hard-driving aesthetic\, built on the sturdy rhythmic waves of Herdon’s drumming\, that recalls the hey day of the New York jazz club Tonic in the late 90’s. Mazurek is also a member of Exploding Star Orchestra and Chicago Underground\, and he has collaborated with a varied roster of musicians and bands including Jim O’Rourke\, Bill Dixon\, Pharoah Sanders and Stereolab. Herdon is also the drummer of post rock ensemble\, Tortoise. Their debut release “Double Demon” was released recently on Delmark Records.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes The Olivia Tremor Control as part of a highly anticipated reunion tour of sorts\, just over ten years after initially disbanding in 2000. Originating in Louisiana in 1988 as the trio of W. Cullen Hart\, Bill Doss\, and Jeff Mangum\, the band moved to Athens\, GA in 1992 where they recorded their (now cult classic) first EP “California Demise”. Mangum went on to form Neutral Milk Hotel\, which along with OTC became the most visible and innovative members of the Elephant 6 collective\, a coterie of like-minded\, lo-fi indie groups who shared musicians\, ideas\, and sensibilities and also included bands such as The Music Tapes (the brainchild of Julian Koster) who opens the show.

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Times New Viking from Columbus\, OH\, on their way to perform at the Celebrate Brooklyn festival in Prospect Park\, as part of a summer tour supporting their new record Dancer Equired on Merge Records. The eclectic Pittsburgh-based group\, Joy Toujours and the Toys du Jour\, open the show. \nFRIDAY\, JULY 8    BILL CALLAHAN \nAfter 16 years of performing under the alias Smog\, Bill Callahan began releasing his albums under his own name in 2007.A Drag City Records stalwart\, Callahan continues his maverick songwriting with his new release\, Apocalypse\, as a follow-up to his last album Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle\, which became a fixture on top-10 lists of 2009\, including 2nd best album in MOJO. With his signature baritone\, the vivid imagery his lyrics and often stark overall tone\, he has appealed to a diverse roster of artists who have recorded his songs\, such as Gil Scott-Heron\, Flaming Lips and Cat Power. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes the “slowcore” band\, Low\, from Duluth\, MN\, for a unique evening featuring two performances in the intimate Warhol Theater. Emerging in 1993 as a distinctly minimalist\, hushed and hypnotic alternative to the predominant “grunge” sound of the time\, the initial trio featured the husband-and-wife team of guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk and drummer/vocalist Mimi Parker along with bassist John Nichols. Shimmy Disc producer Kramer\, who had produced albums by Galaxie 500 and Jon Spencer\, recorded some of their first demos and is credited with helping to shape their quiet\, sparse yet expansive sound. Fast-forward 18 years and many albums later to their upcoming release\, C’mon\, on Sub Pop Records\, which features all new material recorded in a former Catholic church (aka Sacred Heart Studio) in Duluth.

Simply considered by Brian Eno to be “perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived”\, Allen is most known as the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti’s band Africa 70 in Nigeria from 1968 to 1979. He and Kuti are attributed with creating Afrobeat; the hard driving\, funk-infused\, and politically engaged style which has seen quite a resurgence in recent years\, culminating in last year’s Broadway hit musical\, Fela! SUMMARY:Sound Series: Newband and the Harry Partch Instruments
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Edge and The Andy Warhol Museum will present Newband and the Harry Partch instruments at the New Hazlett Theater on March 19th. The masters of microtonal music will perform on instruments invented by the iconoclastic Just Intonation composer Harry Partch (1901-1974) as well as instruments invented by composer and Newband co-founder Dean Drummond. \nNewband’s concert in Pittsburgh will feature the Harry Partch works Castor and Pollux and Two Studies on Ancient Greek Scales\, Dean Drummond’s Before the Last Laugh\, Pitt faculty composer Mathew Rosenblum’s Yonah’s Dream\, Elizabeth Brown’s Delirium\, and Thelonius Monk’s ‘Round Midnight. All the compositions will utilize just tunings—tunings that replicate intervals as they occur naturally in the overtone series. From Bach’s time to the present\, Western instruments have been designed around a division of the octave into 12 equal steps\, making all the intervals somewhat out of tune\, so that the will sound mostly in tune regardless of the music’s key. Deeply dissatisfied with the sound of equal-tempered intervals\, Harry Partch designed his instruments around his own 43 tone-per-octave just tuning\, allowing for much more subtle melodic motion\, as well as intervals that are more in tune and stable. \nWidely regarded as the world’s preeminent microtonal music ensemble\, Newband was founded in 1977 by composer Dean Drummond and flutist Stefani Starin who continue as Artistic Directors.  With Drummond’s invention of the 31-tone zoomoozophone in 1978\, Newband began to explore music using microtonality and alternative tuning systems in an innovative and eclectic repertoire influenced by classical\, jazz\, and world music.  In 1990\, Newband received custodianship of the original Harry Partch Instrument Collection. The typical Newband concert involves a stage filled with some of the world’s most amazing musical instruments performed upon by an ensemble of virtuosos who move from instrument to instrument with incredible ease.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in the intimate Warhol theater for an evening of high-energy live music featuring three of Pittsburgh’s young garage-pop bands; Meeting of Important People\, Neighbors and New Shouts.  The evening will take the form of a revue-style show in the vein of an early rock n’ roll theater concert\, taking inspiration from  sixties Motown revuesor the popular 1964 rock and R& B concert film\, T.A.M.I. Show\, with each group trading a series of short electric sets and a swingin’ guest MC to tie it all together. \nMeeting of Important People.\nThe Host Band for the evening\, MOIP returns to the Warhol following their sold-out summertime EP release show for their latest disc\, “Quit Music!”  The well-known Pittsburgh three-piece garage-pop band keeps the loud parts loud\, the pretty parts pretty\, and will be featuring new numbers from their forthcoming 2nd full-length album. \nNeighbors\nNeighbors plays pop- and soul-infused rock music. The Pittsburgh four-piece draws from influences ranging from ’60s Motown material to ’90s power pop. \nNew Shouts\nVeterans of some of Pittsburgh’s most legendary soul-inspired groups\, New Shouts come to bring you tunes drenched in a Phil Spector-esque big reverb and then hung out to dry in the summer sun.

DESCRIPTION:Music on the Edge and The Andy Warhol Museum continue their 2011 series of contemporary music with New York-based counter)induction. The critically acclaimed new music ensemble will perform a program at the Warhol that will include Kyle Bartlett’s Bas Relief\, Douglas Boyce’s Piano Quartet #1\,Pitt faculty composer Eric Moe’s Dead Cat Bounce\, and Salvatore Sciarrino’s Centauro Marino. \n  \nRecognized for its high-caliber performances and daring programming\, the composer/performer collective counter)induction has established itself as a major force in contemporary music. Hailed by the New York Times for its “fiery ensemble virtuosity” and for its “first-rate performances” by the Washington Post\, counter)induction has given critically-acclaimed performances at venues such as Miller Theatre\, Merkin Hall\, and Roulette. Of a 2005 c)i concert\, Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times wrote that it was “brilliantly performed…masterly….the most bracing of musical experiences.” \ncounter)induction has been awarded an ASCAP/Chamber Music America “Award for Adventurous Programming\,” and was recently a featured ensemble at the “Music at the Anthology” Festival. The group has been featured on Merkin Hall’s “Zoom: Composers Close Up\,” Boston Conservatory’s New Music Week\, the Washington Square Contemporary Music Society series\, Columbia University’s Music Scholarship Conference\, George Washington University\, repeat performances at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival and the University of Pennsylvania\, and in a production of the multimedia opera “Senjo” with the Active Eye theatre troupe in New York. At Columbia University\, c)i is the resident ensemble with the Music Department’s composition program; every semester offering open rehearsals\, critical discussions\, and public performances of undergraduate student works.
