SUMMARY:Sound Series: Beyond Microtonal Music Festival featuring Ray-Kallay Duo and MikroEnsemble
DESCRIPTION:Pianists Vicki Ray and Aron Kallay of the Ray-Kallay Duo have given hundreds of world premieres in Los Angeles and across the country. The Ray-Kallay Duo is dedicated to expanding the sonic possibilities of the multiple keyboard concert\, often using two acoustic grands\, two keyboards or combinations of both. In redefining the 21st century piano duo\, they also frequently include live electronics and alternate tuning systems in their programs. \nMikroEnsemble is a new Finland-based contemporary music group specializing in microtonal music. The core of the ensemble’s instrumentation is formed by new instruments specifically designed for quarter-tone playing. The newest of these instruments is the quarter-tone piano\, built by Otso Haapamäki in 2015. In addition\, MikroEnsemble’s original instrument pallet includes a quarter-tone accordion\, quarter-tone guitar\, quarter-tone flute and quarter-tone clarinet\, along with violin and cello.\n \n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome Eko Chamber Collective\, featuring an eclectic roster of Pittsburgh-based musicians including Herman Pearl\, aka Soy Sos\, (electronics)\, Brittany Trotter (flute)\, Anqwenique Kinsel (voice)\, Sadie Powers (bass)\, Paul Thompson (bass)\, and Brian Riordan (live processing). The collective is a live electro-acoustic ensemble that utilizes spatialized performance techniques that cater to reverberant spaces. With the use of a multi-channel sound system\, the group creates an immersive sound environment by collaborating with the acoustics and architecture of spaces rather than working against them\, and this site-specific performance has been developed with our entrance space in mind. DESCRIPTION:We welcome singer\, songwriter\, cellist\, and multi-instrumentalist Leyla McCalla to our theater. McCalla was born in New York City to Haitian immigrant parents\, studied cello performance and chamber music at New York University\, then moved to New Orleans where she became captivated by Louisiana Creole music and culture. She joined the Carolina Chocolate Drops string band\, appearing on the group’s Leaving Eden album\, before focusing on a solo career and debut album\, Vari-Colored Songs\, a tribute to Langston Hughes\, in 2013\, which was named album of the year by both the London Times and Songlines magazine. She has collaborated with an impressive and varied roster of artists such as Marc Ribot\, Rhiannon Giddens\, and Louis Michot of the Lost Bayou Ramblers.\n \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Revelation: A Conversation on Andy Warhol and Religion
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of a prominent and prolific career\, Andy Warhol both pictured religious subjects and practiced his religious faith. Yet in 20th century histories of modern American art\, religion is largely excluded. Warhol was perhaps doubly excluded\, as a gay man\, and a believing Christian\, whose identity in the art world and in American society was made complicated by those identities. \nThis conversation between Erika Doss\, professor of American studies at the University of Notre Dame\, and Paula Kane\, professor of religious studies at the University of Pittsburgh\, considers what religion meant to Warhol\, how his religious beliefs shaped and directed his art\, and why religion “matters” in the history of American modernism.  \nRegistration is required. \nDoors open at 6 p.m. \nPresented in conjunction with the exhibition Andy Warhol: Revelation.

Visual AIDS is a non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue\, supporting HIV+ artists\, and preserving a legacy\, because AIDS is not over. \nResponding to the exhibition Andy Warhol: Revelation\, artist Jordan Eagles will create Illuminations\, a light installation within the museum galleries. Working with blood donated from members of the LGBTQ+ community\, the artist will project images directly onto Andy Warhol’s paintings in order to address the stigma of HIV\, the FDA’s discriminatory ban on blood donation by gay men\, and the value of human life. Eagles is a New York-based artist who has been exploring the aesthetics and ethics of blood as an artistic medium since the late 1990s. \nThe Allies for Health + Wellbeing will be providing information and services for individuals living with\, or at risk of HIV\, viral hepatitis\, and sexually transmitted infections.

A live DJ will spin dance classics and take musical requests\, and our adjustable wireless headphones will allow participants to choose their own volume levels or opt out. There will be an enclosed sensory friendly area on the first floor where partygoers can decompress or connect in a calm manner. \nThe Factory underground studio will be open for silkscreen printing and other art projects. Guests can also submit their own designs that will be turned into silkscreens and acetate collages for the event. DESCRIPTION:Andy Warhol remains an icon of the 20th century and a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. He also was an obsessive collector of things large and small\, ordinary and quirky. Join us to celebrate the newly released publication\, A is for Archive\, featuring curated selections from Matt Wrbican (1959–2019)\, who was the foremost authority of Warhol’s personal collection. The new book sheds light on the artist’s work and motivations\, as well as on his personality and private life. Over 2\,400 objects were newly cataloged and photographed\, in the process of creating this book. 420 illustrations were carefully chosen\, many of which appear in print for the first time. The book also features an insightful essay by renowned art critic and Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik\, as well as author of the Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné\, Neil Printz.  \nThis hour-long event will begin with an introduction to the project by Abby Franzen-Sheehan\, director of publications at The Warhol\, followed by a discussion with Warhol scholar\, Blake Gopnik and Erin Byrne\, The Warhol’s archivist. They will discuss a breadth of subjects covered in A is for Archive\, including the book’s place among Warhol scholarship\, and how working with the archival collection has informed Gopnik’s upcoming biography of Warhol. DESCRIPTION:TQ Live! presents a queer evening of dazzling performance\, dance\, poetry\, comedy\, resplendent fantasies\, music\, and more. This sixth annual performance series features artists and performers from the many LGBTQIA communities in the Pittsburgh region. This program is produced by Scott Andrew\, Joseph Hall\, and Suzie Silver. Hosted by Joseph Hall\, this year’s line-up includes performances by Anna Azizzy\, Amelia Bande\, Tsohil Bhatia\, Jesse Factor\, Princess Jafar\, Dani Janae\, and Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, with additional surprise video and performance works. \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m. \nThis project is supported in part by the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art\, the Center for the Arts in Society\, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and the Sylvia and David Steiner Speaker Series\, and additional support from the 5801 Video Lounge & Café’s ‘Ladies Who Drag Brunch’ and Richard Parskian. \nArtist Bios\nScott Andrew\nScott Andrew is a multimedia artist\, working in video\, installation\, performance\, and new media. He creates speculative fantasies that peer into otherworldly portals and voids and has most notably exhibited with the Institute for New Feeling at MoMA’s PopRally (New York City)\, Recess (New York City)\, Ballroom Marfa (Marfa\, Texas)\, Whitechapel Gallery (London)\, Black Cube (Denver\, Colorado)\, the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles)\, and the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles). \nAnna Azizzy\nAnna Azizzy processes their identity by performing absurd and hilarious exaggerations of their life and wishes. Their practice spans many mediums\, including performance art\, video art\, experimental music\, and gymnastics–most often working with wonky green screen animation\, flamboyant characters\, and soft sculpture. Anna is from Pittsburgh\, where they earned their BA in Experimental Theater and Sculptural Performance at Carnegie Mellon University\, work various art gigs\, coach gymnastics\, and host the Side Split Variety Show. \nAmelia Bande\nAmelia Bande is a Brooklyn-based artist\, writer and performer from Chile. Her work has been shown at Artists Space\, The Poetry Project\, Storm King Arts Center\, Tang Museum\, MoMA Library\, MIX NYC\, Participant Inc.\, BOFFO Performance Festival\, and more. She has been an artist in residence at WORM Filmwerkplaats\, The Shandaken Project\, Yaddo and FIAR. Her chapbook The Clothes We Wear was published by Belladonna in 2017. Amelia also teaches Spanish at CUNY and NYU. \nTsohil Bhatia\nTsohil Bhatia is an interdisciplinary artist working with the ghost of their performance practice. They received their professional diploma in Performance Studies working with identity\, nationalism\, and conflict at the Srishti School of Art\, Design\, and Technology and are currently an MFA candidate at the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. Tsohil currently makes installation\, photographs\, and video to investigate natural mechanisms and passage of time. These studies aid their current thesis of the thingness of ‘nothing’. \nJesse Factor\nJesse Factor’s solo work is consistently recognized for physical virtuosity\, dramaturgical rigor\, and creative audacity. In Pittsburgh\, Jesse has presented work at PEARLpresents (New Hazlett)\, Fail-Safe Performance Series (Glitter Box) and DONATELLA Queer Variety Show (Arcade Comedy Theater). Factor’s ongoing Marthagany: The Spectre-Acle series has been presented at House of Yes (New York City)\, Boston Contemporary Dance Festival (Boston)\, City Center Studios (New York City)\, Flyover Festival (Iowa)\, Midwest RADfest (Michigan)\, and OUTsider Fest (Texas). \nJoseph Hall\nJoseph Hall is the TQ Live! host\, and a black\, queer\, transracial adoptee\, podcast lover\, creator\, critic\, and youngest of five. He is Deputy Director at BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance as well as a producer\, curator\, and performer working in New York City and Pittsburgh. As a performer\, Joseph has worked with choreographers Staycee Pearl\, Maree ReMalia\, Lida Winfield\, and Jasmine Hearn\, and video artist Suzie Silver. \nPrincess Jafar\nPrincess Jafar\, supervillain and media mogul hot off the heels of a 6-city European tour is excited to bring her saccharine pop singles and hypnotizing visual art back to Pittsburgh. Buy her single “Daddy” on bandcamp and stream the video on Instagram today! \nDani Janae\nDani Janae is a poet living and writing in Pittsburgh. She earned her BA in Creative Writing from Allegheny College. Her poetry deals with the physical and emotional legacy of trauma\, and the intersecting history of her identity as a black\, lesbian\, woman through themes of the grotesque\, incantations\, and folklore. Her work has been published by Argot Magazine\, Public Source\, Palette Poetry\, and Slush Pile Magazine. When she is not writing she enjoys having intimate conversations with the things that puzzle and delight her\, admiring spiders\, watching horror movies\, and hunting for figs. \nSuzie Silver\nSuzie Silver creates art that alludes to the capacity for desire to disrupt social boundaries and imagine new futures. Her well-known early videos\, Freebird and A Spy are canonical works of queer video art. Silver’s videos have been screened at over 100 festivals on five continents. Her ongoing collaboration\, Fairy Fantastic! a fairy and folk tale video series for gender non-conforming kids of all ages\, has screened at festivals in Belarus\, London\, Portugal\, Romania and Australia. \nGinger Brooks Takahashi\nGinger Brooks Takahashi’s collaborative project-based\, socially enraged practice is an extension of feminist spaces and queer inquiry\, actively building community and nurturing alternative forms of information distribution. She is co-founder of queer and feminist journal LTTR; projet MOBILIVRE BOOKMOBILE project; the touring musical act MEN; and General Sisters. She has presented work at the Oakland Museum of California\, 2019; Jewish Museum\, 2016; Tensta Konsthall\, 2015; Brooklyn Museum\, 2013; Museo Tamayo\, 2010; New Museum\, 2009; and Serpentine Gallery\, 2008. She received her BA from Oberlin College and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program in 2007.

DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out. Unfortunately\, tickets will not be available at the door.\n\n  \nWe welcome Kevin Morby to our intimate theater\, on a tour performing as a duo supporting his latest album\, Oh My God\, on Dead Oceans. Morby’s dense lyrical imagery and melodic hook-oriented songwriting have drawn comparisons to fellow troubadours such as Bill Callahan and Jeff Tweedy. Opening the evening will be indie/folk guitarist\, William Tyler\, who released his latest album\, Goes West\, earlier this year on Merge Records. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.
