SUMMARY:Sound Series: Rafiq Bhatia with special guest Morgan Stewart
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back composer\, producer\, and guitarist\, Rafiq Bhatia (member of Son Lux) in a trio configuration with fellow Son Lux member Ian Chang and Riley Mulherkar\, as part of a tour supporting his latest album Environments on Anti Records. Following up on Bhatia’s three previous Sound Series performances\, most recently in 2019 with his Breaking English album and two appearances as guitarist with Son Lux\, with whom he earned Oscar and BAFTA nominations for their Everything Everywhere All At Once score\, Bhatia continues to explore the genre boundaries with his inventive guitar textures. According to the BBC\, “[Bhatia’s] music manages to marry the busyness and vibrancy of jazz and the sparseness and sparkle of electronic music.” And according to The Wire\, “Rafiq Bhatia evokes various interweaving ecosystems on Environments with confidence\, gratitude and grace… devastatingly expressive and intricate.” Also a prolific collaborator\, Bhatia has also worked with a wide range of artists including David Byrne\, André Benjamin\, Mitski and Kronos Quartet. Pittsburgh-based ambient musician Morgan Stewart opens the evening with a new body of work—impressionistic and minimal\, rich in texture and tonal nuance. Abstracting traditional structure\, she weaves layered voice and sound into slow-burning compositions that feel both intimate and expansive. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Hand Habits with special guest Fashion Club
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Hand Habits\, the songwriting outlet of guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Meg Duffy\, to our intimate theater. Recorded in Los Angeles alongside co-producer Joseph Lorge\, Hand Habits most recent album\, Blue Reminder\, features collaborations with a range of musicians including Alan Wyffels\, Gregory Uhlmann (Duffy’s collaborator in Duffy x Uhlmann)\, Blake Mills\, Tim Carr\, Daniel Aged\, and Joshua Johnson and Anna Butters of SML. This collection of songs largely eschew the more insular nature of earlier Hand Habits records\, instead veering into the guitar-forward vibe of 90’s indie rock. Duffy has also performed extensively with Kevin Morby’s band and as a touring member of Perfume Genius. Los Angeles-based\, Fashion Club (aka Pascal Stevenson) opens the evening. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Theater Screenings
DESCRIPTION:In 1965\, Andy Warhol fully transitioned the Factory from a painting studio to a film studio. By then\, he had announced his “retirement” from painting and although he never completely abandoned the medium\, his dedication to filmmaking led to the creation of nearly 30 films that year alone. Warhol’s film techniques evolved\, beginning with incorporating sound into his films and allowing others to guide the production of the film itself. Part of his goal was to make “bad” movies because “when you do something that’s exactly wrong\, you always turn up something.” \nOur daily theater screenings feature a selection of Warhol’s films from 1965 that showcase his masterful techniques of being a subversive and experimental filmmaker. \n\nPlease note that due to potential conflicts\, this schedule is subject to change. SUMMARY:Sound Series: Tara Clerkin Trio with special guest Ricki Weidenhof
DESCRIPTION:We welcome the Bristol-based Tara Clerkin Trio\, on a tour supporting their 2023 EP\, On the Turning Ground\, released on the U.K. record label\, World of Echo. Since Clerkin formed the experimental trio with Patrick Benjamin and Sunny-Joe Paradisos in 2020\, they have been cultivating their unique hybrid aesthetic that combines elements of folk\, dub\, and psychedelia\, as part of Bristol’s underground music scene. In a review in The Wire\, the band is described sonically as\, “Drifting from dubby minimalism to smudged acid jazz\, Tara’s stark and tuneful voice acts as the vehicle for her concise poetic lyricism. The group coalesce disparate influences into a cohesive sound\, reflecting a romantic view of a familiar world.” They visit the intimate Warhol theater just after their appearance at the acclaimed Big Ears Festival in Knoxville\, Tennessee. Pittsburgh-based cellist\, Ricki Weidenhof\, opens the evening. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n
