SUMMARY:Sound Series: A Night of Deep Listening\, featuring Joe McPhee\, Claire Chase\, and Peter Evans
DESCRIPTION:Organized in collaboration with Carnegie International\, 57th Edition\, 2018\, this evening program is a musical synthesis of the exhibition-within-the-International-exhibition Dusty Groove II: Space Is a Diamond. Working in collaboration\, John Corbett\, Jim Dempsey\, and artist Josiah McElheny have presented a gallery of artifacts anchored by sculptural portraits of four maverick musicians of the twentieth century: John Cage\, Pauline Oliveros\, Harry Partch\, and Sun Ra\, plus an homage to the “cosmic explorations” of the twenty-first century musical visionary\, Joe McPhee. The performance brings together Joe McPhee himself\, with Claire Chase\, and Peter Evans\, three giants of contemporary of music\, in turn inspired by these four historical figures\, and a revival of composer Lucia Dlugoszewski’s “Space is a Diamond”\, performed for the first time in over 40 years. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: serpentwithfeet
DESCRIPTION:We welcome vocalist and performance artist\, serpentwithfeet (aka Josiah Wise) on a tour supporting his debut full-length album\, soil\, co-released by Tri Angle Records and Secretly Canadian. With a unique aesthetic that blends elements of gospel music of his youth and more minimal and ambient composition\, Wise had this to say about the lyrical nature of the new record: “I remember growing up there was language for how men and women interact…I hate to say it\, but I think there is still a lot of shame around two black men dating and loving on each other and I was very aware of that. While working on soil\, i was exploring and trying to make sense of my needs and my love language… I’m excited about the way things naturally come out of my body. I am always going to embrace discipline and streamlining. But I’m in a space at the moment where I don’t need or desire the corset. It’s time for expansiveness.” \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Adam Green’s Aladdin
DESCRIPTION:We welcome musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green for a unique evening featuring a solo acoustic performance of songs from his second feature film Adam Green’s Aladdin\, followed by a full screening of the film. Shot entirely on papier-mache sets designed by Green\, this immersive fantasy film stars an eclectic cast including Macaulay Culkin\, Natasha Lyonne\, Alia Shawkat\, Jack Dishel\, and Francesco Clemente – with Green playing Aladdin. In Green’s take on this classic tale\, the lamp is a 3-D printer\, the Princess is a decadent socialite\, the planet gets a sex-change\, and its population prints out an analogue version of the Internet. Regarding the connectivity between his music\, art and filmmaking\, Green says “If you listen to my songs\, you see they’re kind of cartoonish. I try to make songs like my paintings. When creating my movie\, I approached the script like it was a song.” Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \n \nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Rashaad Newsome: Shade Compositions
DESCRIPTION:Rashaad Newsome\, renowned New York based artist\, will make his Pittsburgh debut of Shade Compositions\, an ongoing performance project that launched in 2005. Throughout the Fall of 2018\, Newsome will be working in Pittsburgh\, casting local performers\, and staging rehearsals for Shade Compositions\, the artist’s critically acclaimed performance. In this performance\, Newsome is both conductor\, composer and vocal choreographer\, leading an ensemble of locally cast self-identifying black female and femme performers\, whose individual voices and gestures are synthesized to form improvisatory orchestral music. Newsome explores the complexities of social power structures and questions of agency. \nDuring the performance\, Newsome collages video and audio using hacked video game controllers. For over a decade Newsome has engaged in casual\, but extensive ethnographic and linguistic research into global iterations of “Black Vernacular”—a variety of English natively spoken by most working and middle-class African Americans\, particularly in urban communities. Through his visually engaging and dynamic style of live performance and video\, Newsome explores the complexities of social power structures and questions of agency. \nThis event is organized by Jessica Beck\, the Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Devan Shimoyama: Cry\, Baby. \nRashaad Newsome was born in 1979 in New Orleans\, and lives and works in New York City. He has exhibited and performed in galleries\, museums\, institutions\, and festivals throughout the world including: Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans\, The Whitney Museum\, The Studio Museum in Harlem\, Brooklyn Museum\, MoMAPS1\, SFMOMA\, New Orleans Museum of Art\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\, The Garage Center for Contemporary Culture\, Moscow\, Russia\, and MUSA\, Vienna\, Austria\, and the recently inaugurated National Museum of African American History and Culture. Newsome’s work is in public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, The Brooklyn Museum of Art\, The SFMOMA\, The Studio Museum\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and The McNay Art Museum of San Antonio. In 2010 he participated in the Whitney Biennial\, and in 2011 in Greater New York at MoMAPS1. \nCastings will take place at The Warhol and PearlArts Studios on the following dates: \nThe Warhol:\nWednesday\, November 14\, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.\nThursday\, November 15\, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.\nFriday\, November 16\, 12–7 p.m. \nPearlArts Studios\, 201 N. SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art: ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS
DESCRIPTION:ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS is the 29th iteration of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art project. At a moment of growing interest in the histories of AIDS activism\, ALTERNATE ENDINGS\, ACTIVIST RISINGS foregrounds contemporary engagements between activists\, artists\, and cultural workers on the front lines.

SUMMARY:Art in Context: Visibility and Erasure
DESCRIPTION:In 1974 Andy Warhol completed his most lucrative commission—Ladies and Gentlemen\, a series of over 200 striking portraits of African American and Latina drag queens and trans women. The subjects received just $50 to sit for Polaroids in Warhol’s studio\, and they were not named when the work debuted in Italy in 1975. Now over 40 years later researchers at The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts have successfully identified all of Warhol’s subjects in the series\, including iconic transgender performer and activist\, Marsha ‘Pay it No Mind’ Johnson.\n\nJoin us for Happy Birthday\, Marsha! followed by a discussion about visibility\, representation\, and authorship with filmmakers Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel\, moderated by local advocate Ciora Thomas. Happy Birthday\, Marsha! imagines iconic transgender performer and activist\, Marsha ‘Pay it No Mind’ Johnson in the hours before the 1969 anti-policing riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Starring Independent Spirit Award Winner Mya Taylor with cinematography by Arthur Jafa\, Happy Birthday\, Marsha! blends documentary storytelling with historical fiction to counter the endemic erasure of trans women of color from narratives of political resistance.
