Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of internationally touring artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum on Isabella Street\, featuring Mexican Institute of Sound\, Sudan Archives\, and headlined by Kurt Vile and the Violators. \nSchedule\n5:30 p.m. Mexican Institute of Sound \nMexican Institute of Sound\, led by Camilo Lara\, blends his eclectic interests in Cumbia and a range of Latin American genres with infectious beat-driven arrangements and a DIY/punk and high energy aesthetic. The latest album Distrito Federal (2021) garnered much critical praise\, including NPR’s best albums of the year list\, and features collaborations with Dan The Automator (Gorillaz) a Graham Coxon (Blur)\, Duckwrth\, BIA\, Cuco and Banda Misteriosa.  \n7 p.m. Sudan Archives \nSudan Archives is a unique solo performer who has emerged as an inventive avant-garde violinist and experimental beatmaker who loops and layers her violin and vocals to create a new minimalist hybrid approach to blending classical\, West African\, and hip hop and R&B influences. She’s captivated audiences at festivals such as Coachella and Pitchfork with her hybrid sound\, sharing stages with St. Vincent\, Ibeyi\, and Michael Kiwanuka.  \n8:30 p.m. Kurt Vile and the Violators \nWe welcome back Philadelphia-based songwriter and guitarist Kurt Vile as headliner of our Block Party. With inspiration ranging from John Prine to Sonic Youth\, Vile has been honing his unique songwriting craft and inventive guitar style since the early days of co-founding War on Drugs with Adam Granduciel in 2005\, before focusing on his solo career and his band the Violators with a series of releases leading up to broader exposure with the album Wakin on a Pretty Daze on Matador Records in 2013. He has collaborated with a range of musicians including Steve Gunn\, Courtney Barnett\, and Cate Le Bon\, and his latest album\, Watch My Moves\, marks his major-label debut on Verve Records\, the label that coincidentally released the classic Velvet Underground and Nico album in 1967. \nAnd between sets\, enjoy the eclectic sounds of DJ Pandemic Pete. \n\nDoors open at 5 p.m. Entrance at Sandusky and Isabella Streets.\nThe Sound Series: Block Party is rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Portland\, Oregon-based folk singer/songwriter Haley Heynderickx for the first time on a tour supporting her debut album\, I Need to Start a Garden\, released by Mama Bird Recording Co. Heynderickx will be joined by The Westerlies as her band; a New York-based brass quartet who according to NPR Music “explore jazz\, roots and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both ‘folk-like and composerly\, lovely and intellectually rigorous’”. Drawing from her religious Philipino-American upbringing and a range folk music\, including guitarists such Leo Kottke and John Fahey\, Heynderickx crafts her introspective songs. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Welsh songwriter Cate Le Bon and her unique and abstract pop vision on a tour supporting her latest album\, Pompeii\, on Mexican Summer Records. As a follow up to her Mercury Prize nominated album Reward (2019)\, and composed entirely alone during the pandemic in an “uninterrupted vacuum\,” the new album was recorded largely by herself with long-term collaborator and co-producer Samur Khouja in Cardiff\, Wales. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Japanese experimental sound artist\, FUJI||||||||||TA (pronounced Fujita) on his first U.S. tour. His unique practice utilizes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. In 2009\, Fujita hand fabricated a pipe organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Designed to create a soundscape rather than function as a more traditional musical instrument\, he has added a water element\, with sound synthesized water tanks. The music blends water sounds from multiple aquariums alongside his pipe organ and voice. Since 2006 he has had many solo performances and collaborative works with musicians\, including ∈Ｙ ∋ (Boredoms)\, Akio Suzuki\, Keiji Haino and Koichi Makigami. It was also the inspiration for American musicologist Brian Shimkovitz’s blog Awesome Tapes From Africa launched in 2002\, and the cassette was eventually released as an LP in 2015. Ata Kak’s unique sound has been described as a hybrid of highlife\, rap\, funk\, hip-hop\, and electronica\, presented with the sweaty passion of a Prince record and the lo-fi recording charm of early Chicago house music. DESCRIPTION:The Da Capo Chamber Players have been hailed by The New Yorker as a “distinguished ensemble…at the center of the New York new-music scene for forty-five years” (May 2016). Winner of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award early in its trajectory (1973)\, the ensemble is about to enter its 50th season. It is a five-member “Pierrot” ensemble (flute\, clarinet\, violin\, cello and piano). DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our exhibition Marisol and Warhol Take New York\, we are pleased to present the newly commissioned multi-media performance Songs for Marisol by Roberto Carlos Lange (aka Helado Negro). The performance will consist of original compositions combined with a selection of Andy Warhol’s films featuring the artist Marisol. A South Florida native born to Ecuadorian immigrants\, Lange is best known by his stage name\, Helado Negro. He explores Latinx identity and pluralistic sensibilities in his personal and political avant pop music. His latest album Far In was released on October 22 on 4AD. He is also the recipient of the 2019 Grants to Artists award in Music from the Foundation for the Contemporary Arts. If you have any questions\, please contact us at 412.237.8300. \nAl Cerulo has been praised for his work as a musician and educator both nationally and internationally and is an advocate for the commissioning and performing of new works by both established and up-and-coming composers to help move forward and breathe new life into the art.  \nAmplified Perception is a seventy-five-minute soundscape sculpted through the music of five composers whose compositional styles are each uniquely beautiful: Jude Traxler\, Eve Beglarian\, Mathew Rosenblum\, Paula Matthusen\, and Randy Gibson. Writing for a single voice\, each composer enhances the acoustic timbre of their instrument with live amplification and/or digital processing. DESCRIPTION:weighted sky is a collaboratively built work between slowdanger\, MICHIYAYA Dance Directors Anya and Mitsuko Clarke-Verdery\, and Baltimore based sound artist Abdu Ali\, with original set pieces by Pittsburgh based sculptor Rob Hackett. The work explores the collapse of capitalism and white supremacist structures on the bodies of people\, nationally and globally. It deconstructs hussle culture and seeks to create a process of active imagining for a queer future where we can thrive. \nweighted sky was made possible by Unique Projects\, Pentacle Administrative Support Program\, the Space Upstairs\, The Warhol\, the Opportunity Fund\, the Heinz Endowment’s Small Arts Initiative\, PNC Charitable Trusts\, and the Pittsburgh Foundation A. An early fall afternoon and evening of live music in a relaxed and festive environment outdoors in our North Shore neighborhood. Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum on Isabella Street\, including Pastor Deryck Tines & the Lemington Chorale\, Tomberlin\, Andy Shauf\, 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, featuring Dean & Britta\, and Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500’s On Fire. \nEntrance at Federal and Isabella Streets. \nSchedule\n3 p.m. Pastor Deryck Tines & the Lemington Chorale \nWe kick off the day with a high-energy\, spiritually-energizing\, and soul-stirring set by Pastor Deryck Tines and Pittsburgh’s Lemington Chorale. Tines will lead this group of dynamic singers though a medley of gospel songs\, spirituals\, and hymns celebrating black history\, spirituality\, and soul\, from his recently released live album We Shall Overcome Someday. \n4:30 p.m. Tomberlin \nWe welcome singer/songwriter Tomberlin (aka Sarah Beth Tomberlin) for an intimate solo performance as part of tour with Andy Shauf\, supporting her latest EP Projections on Saddle Creek Records. Originally from Jacksonville\, Florida\, Tomberlin moved around a bit growing up as a result of her father’s work as a Baptist pastor. She moved to Louisville in 2017 and released her first album At Weddings\, featuring her sparse arrangements and vivid lyrics\, produced by Owen Pallett. \n6 p.m. Andy Shauf \nWe welcome the songwriter Andy Shauf\, and are pleased to reschedule his performance from June so that he and his band could be part of our Sound Series: Block Party\, as part of a tour supporting his most recent\, highly lauded album Neon Skyline on ANTI records. His music is often described as reflecting the Canadian prairie with a unique blend of hushed vocals\, vivid lyrics\, and intricately crafted arrangements\, drawing on influences such as Neil Young\, Wilco\, and Elliot Smith. \n7:30 p.m. 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, featuring Dean & Britta \nIn celebration of its 13th anniversary\, we’re thrilled to bring back\, 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests. The performance\, which consists of commissioned soundtracks by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips for a selection of Warhol’s silent film portraits\, toured extensively after its premiere in Pittsburgh in October 2008\, playing over 85 dates over eight years. The 13th anniversary tour will provide audiences with another opportunity to experience this critically lauded performance with newly digitized HD versions of the films. The project resulted in the first official release of early Warhol films on DVD\, which was produced in collaboration with Plexifilm. \n13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, a project jointly commissioned by The Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts 2008. \n9 p.m. Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500’s On Fire \nThe Warhol’s inaugural Sound Series: Block Party closes with a seamless transition from 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests to a special set of Galaxie 500’s seminal album On Fire\, performed by the same band\, featuring Dean Wareham\, Britta Phillips\, Anthony LaMarca\, and Matt Sumrow. Wareham\, who formed Galaxie 500 in 1987 and Luna in 1991\, has also recorded several albums with his wife Britta Phillips as Dean & Britta\, and beyond working with Andy Warhol’s films\, they have scored films such as The Squid & The Whale and Mistress America by Noah Baumbach. Most recently they released A Sentimental Education\, an album of covers\, and A Place of Greater Safety\, an EP of 6 instrumentals on Double Feature Records. \n\nThe Sound Series Block Party is rain or shine. Miller\, most prominently known as a founding member of Mission of Burma and for his longtime membership of Alloy Orchestra\, which showcases a different musical perspective\, blending elements of classical and rock music\, influenced by everyday phenomena as well as surrealism. This concert features Miller on electric guitar with loops\, devices and electronics\, creating a one-person orchestra for compositions that are organically structured by writings from his dream journal. The second set of the evening features Miller’s music for string quartet instrumentation performed by Boston’s own Ludovico Ensemble\, and culminates in Music for String Quartet and Two Turntables\, with Miller joining in on the turntables. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to present the online premiere of @1minworld\, featuring a recorded live performance in The Warhol’s intimate theater by performance duo\, Princess\, comprised of Alexis Gideon and Michael O’Neill (JD Samson & MEN). @1minworld is a video cycle and live performance piece about social media and our love-hate relationship with cell phone culture. Told through 15 one-minute danceable\, vivid Pop Art music videos\, this hyper-meta work is the first album built for and released exclusively on Instagram\, using the social media platform as a means for delivery as well as material for the content. This piece is also among the first to leverage—rather than mask—the absence of a live audience; at moments Princess breaks the fourth wall in ways that could only happen in an online experience.\n\n\n \n\n\nA conversation between Jose Diaz\, The Warhol’s chief curator\, Ben Harrison\, The Warhol’s curator of performing arts\, Alice Gray Stites\, 21c Museum Hotels’ chief curator\, and Princess will follow.
