DESCRIPTION:We welcome Japanese experimental sound artist\, FUJI||||||||||TA (pronounced Fujita) on his first U.S. tour. His unique practice utilizes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. In 2009\, Fujita hand fabricated a pipe organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Designed to create a soundscape rather than function as a more traditional musical instrument\, he has added a water element\, with sound synthesized water tanks. The music blends water sounds from multiple aquariums alongside his pipe organ and voice. Since 2006 he has had many solo performances and collaborative works with musicians\, including ∈Ｙ ∋ (Boredoms)\, Akio Suzuki\, Keiji Haino and Koichi Makigami. The performance will consist of original compositions combined with a selection of Andy Warhol’s films featuring the artist Marisol. A South Florida native born to Ecuadorian immigrants\, Lange is best known by his stage name\, Helado Negro. He explores Latinx identity and pluralistic sensibilities in his personal and political avant pop music. His latest album Far In was released on October 22 on 4AD. He is also the recipient of the 2019 Grants to Artists award in Music from the Foundation for the Contemporary Arts. Writing for a single voice\, each composer enhances the acoustic timbre of their instrument with live amplification and/or digital processing. In redefining the 21st century piano duo\, they also frequently include live electronics and alternate tuning systems in their programs. \nMikroEnsemble is a new Finland-based contemporary music group specializing in microtonal music. The core of the ensemble’s instrumentation is formed by new instruments specifically designed for quarter-tone playing. The newest of these instruments is the quarter-tone piano\, built by Otso Haapamäki in 2015. In addition\, MikroEnsemble’s original instrument pallet includes a quarter-tone accordion\, quarter-tone guitar\, quarter-tone flute and quarter-tone clarinet\, along with violin and cello.\n \n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome Eko Chamber Collective\, featuring an eclectic roster of Pittsburgh-based musicians including Herman Pearl\, aka Soy Sos\, (electronics)\, Brittany Trotter (flute)\, Anqwenique Kinsel (voice)\, Sadie Powers (bass)\, Paul Thompson (bass)\, and Brian Riordan (live processing). The collective is a live electro-acoustic ensemble that utilizes spatialized performance techniques that cater to reverberant spaces. With the use of a multi-channel sound system\, the group creates an immersive sound environment by collaborating with the acoustics and architecture of spaces rather than working against them\, and this site-specific performance has been developed with our entrance space in mind. Audience members are encouraged to move about the performance space\, as the ensemble’s compositions are created to lend themselves to unique sonic experiences\, which unfold differently depending on one’s vantage point. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only. DESCRIPTION:We welcome singer\, songwriter\, cellist\, and multi-instrumentalist Leyla McCalla to our theater. McCalla was born in New York City to Haitian immigrant parents\, studied cello performance and chamber music at New York University\, then moved to New Orleans where she became captivated by Louisiana Creole music and culture. She joined the Carolina Chocolate Drops string band\, appearing on the group’s Leaving Eden album\, before focusing on a solo career and debut album\, Vari-Colored Songs\, a tribute to Langston Hughes\, in 2013\, which was named album of the year by both the London Times and Songlines magazine. She has collaborated with an impressive and varied roster of artists such as Marc Ribot\, Rhiannon Giddens\, and Louis Michot of the Lost Bayou Ramblers.\n \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.
