SUMMARY:Sound Series: Block Party
DESCRIPTION:Please note: The Sound Series: Block Party is sold out and there will not be any tickets sold at the door. \nWe are pleased to present the third annual Sound Series: Block Party featuring an autumn evening of live music in a relaxed and festive environment outdoors\, as part of The Pop District. Even more food and beverages will be available for purchase on site\, along with hands-on t-shirt\, tote bag\, or poster making. Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of internationally touring artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum\, featuring Zenizen\, Helado Negro\, and headlined by Ethel Cain. \nSchedule\n5:30 p.m. Zenizen \nSinger\, songwriter\, and producer Zenizen (aka Opal Hoyt) opens the Block Party with a solo performance. Her music explores the fringes of experimental pop\, soul\, and funk\, layered with her rich alto voice. Outside of her work as Zenizen\, Hoyt boasts a sprawling resume that includes performance credits with Helado Negro\, Jordan Rakei\, and Okay Kaya. \n7 p.m. Helado Negro \nWe welcome back Helado Negro (aka Roberto Carlos Lange) in a trio format for the middle set at the Block Party. A South Florida native born to Ecuadorian immigrants\, Lange explores Latinx identity and pluralistic sensibilities in his personal and political avant pop music. His latest critically lauded album Far In\, and seventh-full length record\, is his first release on 4AD and features special guests Jen Wasner (Flock of Dimes) and Opal Hoyt’s (Zenizen). \n8:30 p.m. Ethel Cain \nSinger/songwriter Ethel Cain and her band headline the Block Party. Originally from Tallahassee\, FL\, Cain (aka Hayden Anhedonia) moved to Indiana in 2020\, where she recorded her EP Inbred\, and following the release her full-length debut\, Preacher’s Daughter last year. Cain now resides in Pittsburgh. Her unique sound and sensibility combine elements of rock and country with ethereal vocals and raw lyrics. And her collaborators include Lil Aaron\, who was featured on her single Michelle Pfeiffer and Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine\, who recorded a live version duet with Cain of Morning Elvis last year from the band’s Dance Fever album. Preacher’s Daughter has received several “best of” list mentions\, including the single American Teenager at No. 11 on Pitchfork’s “The 100 Best Songs of 2022”\, as well as being included on Barack Obama’s end of the year playlist. \n\nDoors open at 5 p.m. Entrance at Sandusky and Isabella Streets.\nThe Sound Series: Block Party is rain or shine. All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges.\nAll bags subject to security search.\nAlcohol\, coolers\, and pets prohibited (with the exception of service dogs).\nNo outside food or beverage allowed\, except sealed bottles of water.\nPlease note the Sound Series: Block Party is primarily standing room only. SUMMARY:Sound Series: Soy Sos with PVKVSV: Dub Corridor
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Due to the weather conditions\, this performance will take place in The Warhol entrance space. \nOur Sound Series is pleased to partner with PearlArts\, a multidisciplinary arts organization in Pittsburgh (founded by choreographer Staycee Pearl and sound designer/producer Herman Pearl)\, on a monthly summer series focused on the reggae offshoots/evolutions of dub\, roots\, dancehall\, sound system culture and beyond. Each collaboration will be a different take on these elements\, drawing from prepared materials and improvisations. \nWe welcome Soy Sos (aka Herman Pearl) and collaborator PVKVSV (aka Hussein Pwono) for a special site specific performance\, Dub Corridor\, developed with our renovated side alley\, Silver Street\, in mind. The duo will experiment with the unique acoustics of this intimate urban alley turned patio/beer garden\, with an exploratory\, electronic\, beat-driven\, and dub-inspired set for a relaxed\, outdoor summer evening. This performance is an extension of PearlArts’ SYNCHRONIZED: with Soy Sos series. \nPVKVSV (aka Hussein Pwono) is a Congolese-American artist\, beatmaker\, DJ and emerging producer from Pittsburgh\, PA. He expands on jazz and hip hop roots & incorporates electronic elements and samples from music that moves- bossa nova\, flamenco\, and Italian film scores are just a few sources of inspiration\, but influence can be found anywhere\, and the artist leaves no stone unturned. \nHerman Pearl/Soy Sos is a sound designer\, audio engineer\, and producer. He sees sound as an actual physical force\, literally moving the air around and through us. This was impressed upon him in his early encounters with Jamaican sound system\, dub and bass culture in the late 80s. It informs everything he does from the composition\, production\, and mixing of the music to the design and configuration of the playback systems for performances. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only. Limited seating is available upon advance request. We are committed to offering inclusive\, engaging experiences for people of all abilities. To request accommodations to enhance your visit\, please contact access@warhol.org or call 412.237.8354.\n\n

\nWe welcome Soy Sos (aka Herman Pearl) and collaborator Gladstone Deluxe for a special site specific performance\, Dub Corridor\, developed with our renovated side alley\, Silver Street\, in mind. \nGladstone Butler is a New York based artist working with percussion and electronics. His work takes the form of recorded media\, installations and performance. While percussion is often only tied to the act of striking an object\, Gladstone sees percussion as an expressive manifestation of time architectures that bind humans\, framed by the larger rhythmical walls of sun-rise and set. In Gladstone’s work\, musical rhythm becomes a unique tool for celebrating nonlinearity\, asymmetry and difference in society.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Vieux Farka Touré with special guest DJ Pandemic Pete
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Malian singer and guitarist\, Vieux Farka Touré. The son of Grammy-winning musician Ali Farka Touré\, Vieux’s globally-minded music blends traditional African melodies and instrumentation with modern electric guitar and rock structures. His 2017 release\, Samba (meaning second son in his native Songhai) was recorded in front of a live studio audience in Woodstock\, New York. Last year\, Vieux collaborated with Houston-based psych-rock band Khruangbin on the album Ali\, which reimagines a selection of songs by his father\, Ali Farka Touré. And he also released Les Racines\, which translates as ‘the roots’ and represents a deep reconnection with the Songhai music of Northern Mali. DJ Pandemic Pete opens the evening. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nVieux Farka Touré’s performance begins at 8:30 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only. Limited seating is available upon advance request. We are committed to offering inclusive\, engaging experiences for people of all abilities. To request accommodations to enhance your visit\, please contact access@warhol.org or call 412.237.8354.\n\n
