SUMMARY:Sound Series: L’Rain
DESCRIPTION:We welcome L’Rain\, the musical project of multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, producer and curator Taja Cheek. Operating at the intersections of art\, music\, film\, fashion and cultural discourse\, Cheek’s sensibility\, crafted in collaboration with Ben Chapoteau-Katz and Andrew Lappin\, transcends disciplines\, blurs traditional genre boundaries and deconstructs pop tropes. The 2021 album Fatigue garnered critical acclaim including album of the year from The Wire\, and in May 2026\, L’Rain recorded a live album and concert film at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Cheek was guest curator of the 2024 Whitney Biennial and currently is the artistic director of Performance Space New York. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only. SUMMARY:These Americas\, HCUAP Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the artistic trajectory of three visiting artists in the HCUAP Visiting Artists in Residence Program whose work differently reflects on the experience of the Americas as a plural place with vibrant histories: Tomas Ives\, from Santiago Chile\, Ish Muhammad of Indiana and New York\, and Gloria “Gloe” Talamantes\, a first-generation Mexican-American living in Chicago. With different backgrounds in style writing\, printmaking\, graphic design and journalism\, all three visiting artists do high impact work connected to communities in the public realm.  \nHemispheric Conversations: Urban Art Project (HCUAP\, pronounced\, “hiccup”) seeks to create platforms for conversation and education about urban art production (graffiti\, street art and muralism\, among other genres) to explore aesthetic and historical connections between post-industrial cities. Beginning in 2016 they have sustained programming that focused on the intercultural exchange between the post-industrial cities like Pittsburgh\, Chicago\, Mexico and León Guanajuato Mexico. \n\nDoors open at 5 p.m.\n\nIsh Muhammad is a self-taught artist. Born in New York City\, Ish has called Indiana home for over four decades. Muhammad’s work is post-graffiti abstract expressionism and his works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries\, museums\, murals and site-specific installations. He maintains residency at the Lovelace House in Gary\, Indiana and a satellite studio in Hammond\, Indiana. Muhammad earned his bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Purdue University. \nGloria “Gloe” Talamantes is a first-generation Mexican-American mixed media artist\, youth worker\, graffiti writer and cultural worker. Her art consists of mural painting\, documenting\, curating and organizing to promote community building and self-awareness through healing-centered practices. She has self-funded murals across Chicago through the Brown Wall Project\, a project created in response to graffiti erasure in Chicago. Talamantes has produced public art programming\, international mural residencies and exchanges for artists who intentionally work on civic and justice initiatives through arts integration. She has created murals\, community engagement projects\, public speaking engagements and workshops for various institutions and non-profit organization across the country. Talamantes is a former artist in residence with the Museum of Contemporary Art’s School Partnership for Art and Civic Engagement (SPACE) and is a program director at the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council. She believes that art is a universal language that can be used to learn\, grow and heal. \nTomas Ives is a Santiago\, Chile based muralist\, printmaker\, community organizer and graphic designer. He says of his work: “I create through illustration\, motion graphics\, brand design\, mural art and printmaking. My inspiration comes from popular art and stories\, struggles and movements that push us to transform the world around us. For me\, every project begins with people—listening\, connecting and understanding—so that the result carries identity\, meaning and a spark of change.” He has given talks in Santiago\, Berlin and Pittsburgh and painted murals all over the world.

SUMMARY:Dandy Andy: Warhol’s Queer History
DESCRIPTION:Join artist educators for Dandy Andy\, a monthly tour that focuses on Warhol’s queer history. While his sexuality is frequently suppressed or debated\, Warhol was a gay man who had several partners throughout his life. Warhol’s boyfriends\, including Edward Wallowitch\, John Giorno\, and Jed Johnson\, were also his colleagues and collaborators\, helping to shape and define his career as an artist. This tour traces Warhol’s romantic relationships and queer identity against the backdrop of the historical gay rights movement in the United States. Tours meet on the museum’s seventh floor.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Luna
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back the highly influential indie rock band\, Luna\, for a special retrospective set\, playing songs across their catalogue. Formed in 1991 by singer/guitarist Dean Wareham\, after parting ways with his first band\, Galaxie 500\, Luna made seven studio albums before disbanding in 2005. The band reunited and toured in 2015\, and in 2017 released a new LP\, A Sentimental Education and an EP of instrumentals\, A Place of Greater Safety. Rhino also recently re-issued their classic Penthouse (1995) album as a double LP. The band’s line-up has remained the same since 1999: Dean Wareham on vocals/guitar\, Britta Phillips on bass\, Sean Eden on guitar and Lee Wall on drums. In 2008\, we premiered 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests featuring music by Dean & Britta\, which has toured internationally with over 100 performances. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nLuna’s performance begins at 8 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only.
