DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Portland-based singer-songwriter Haley Heynderickx\, this time joined by collaborator Max García Conover\, to Carnegie Lecture Hall on a tour supporting their new record\, What Of Our Nature\, on Fat Possum Records. This collaborative record was made in the spirit of Woody Guthrie. From opposite corners of the country\, the two songwriters spent a year sharing songs while reading Woody’s words and biographies\, slowly exploring a patchwork of Americanism to see where their stories fit. García Conover\, half-Puerto Rican\, and Heynderickx\, half-Filipina\, found themselves with this collection of music about the legacy of colonialism\, generational identity\, commercialism and the slippery target of addressing social equity in song. They recorded directly to tape in five days in a barn in Vermont. Pianist and composer\, Kafari\, opens the evening.  \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

Watson\, a Polaris Music winner in 2006\, has five gold albums in Canada and over the course of his career\, has retained the uncanny ability to coexist in mainstream pop-culture spaces and on the avant-garde fringes. Singer-songwriter\, La Force (aka Ariel Engle)\, opens the evening. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n \n  \nPatrick Watson composes\, performs\, and records his albums with his long-time bandmate and collaborator and multi-instrumentalists Mishka Stein and Olivier Fairfield. The Canadian artist reached gold and platinum status in over multiple countries (including five certified gold albums in Canada)\, and his shows sell out around the world. Over the course of his career\, Watson has retained the uncanny ability to coexist in mainstream pop-culture spaces and on the avant-garde fringes. DESCRIPTION:We welcome back West African Tuareg guitarist\, Mdou Moctar\, and his band who are originally from Agadez\, a desert village in rural Niger. They join us on a tour supporting their latest release Tears of Injustice\, a re-recorded version of their critically praised record\, Funeral for Justice\, re-arranged for acoustic and traditional instruments. According to the band’s U.S.-based bassist and producer\, Mikey Coltun\, in a recent interview in Stereogum\,“there’s a whole other side of the band that comes out when we play a stripped-down set.“ With this latest release out in February on Matador Records\, the band continues to reflect their unique blend of contemporary Saharan music and Western rock music structures and guitar techniques. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and Carnegie Museum of Natural History welcome back Jad Abumrad\, founder and co-host of NPR’s Radiolab as well as composer and producer. Drawing on Radiolab episodes\, and in conversation with Dr. Nicole Heller\, associate curator of Anthropocene Studies at Carnegie Museum of Natural History\, the program will explore Abumrad’s creative process\, how Radiolab bridges science\, art\, and humanities in storytelling\, and the power of this approach for interpreting the complex social-natural science needed for sustaining a healthy planet. Abumrad has received three Peabody Awards for Radiolab\, and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2011.\n \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\nPlease note: For your safety and the safety of those around you\, all those attending this performance must show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination (final vaccine must be dated at least 14 days prior to the performance) at their time of entry with a valid ticket. Richman has been performing consistently over the last 30 years\, beginning with his pioneering band\, the Modern Lovers\, in the early 1970s. DESCRIPTION:Andy Warhol remains an icon of the 20th century and a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. He also was an obsessive collector of things large and small\, ordinary and quirky. Join us to celebrate the newly released publication\, A is for Archive\, featuring curated selections from Matt Wrbican (1959–2019)\, who was the foremost authority of Warhol’s personal collection. The new book sheds light on the artist’s work and motivations\, as well as on his personality and private life. Over 2\,400 objects were newly cataloged and photographed\, in the process of creating this book. 420 illustrations were carefully chosen\, many of which appear in print for the first time. The book also features an insightful essay by renowned art critic and Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik\, as well as author of the Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné\, Neil Printz.  \nThis hour-long event will begin with an introduction to the project by Abby Franzen-Sheehan\, director of publications at The Warhol\, followed by a discussion with Warhol scholar\, Blake Gopnik and Erin Byrne\, The Warhol’s archivist. They will discuss a breadth of subjects covered in A is for Archive\, including the book’s place among Warhol scholarship\, and how working with the archival collection has informed Gopnik’s upcoming biography of Warhol. DESCRIPTION:We welcome SQÜRL\, featuring the iconic independent filmmaker and musician Jim Jarmusch and producer/composer Carter Logan. The band\, self-described as a “marginal rock band from New York City who like big drums & distorted guitars\, cassette recorders\, loops\, feedback\, sad country songs\, molten stoner core\, chopped & screwed hip-hop\,” began in 2009 and has released records on ATP and Third Man Records. In 2014\, the group received the Cannes Soundtrack award for its score for the film Only Lovers Left Alive\, a collaboration with Dutch lutenist Jozef Van Wissem. \nIn this program\, the band performs live scores to four films by Dada and surrealist artist Man Ray. The program features L’Étoile de mer (1928)\, Emak Bakia (1926)\, Le Retour à la Raison (1923)\, and Les Mystères du Château de Dé (1929). \nJim Jarmusch was born in Akron\, Ohio\, and lives and works in New York. Films include Permanent Vacation (1980)\, Stranger than Paradise (1984)\, Down by Law (1986)\, Mystery Train (1989)\, Night on Earth (1991)\, Dead Man (1995)\, Year of the Horse (1997)\, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)\, Coffee and Cigarettes (2003)\, Broken Flowers (2005)\, The Limits of Control (2009)\, Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)\, Paterson (2016)\, Gimme Danger (2016) and the short film “Int. Trailer. DESCRIPTION:The Bang on a Can All-Stars are an electric chamber ensemble known for exploring the furthest reaches of the classical music world. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol partners with Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for the Arts in Society and School of Art to present DarkMatter\, a trans South Asian performance art duo comprised of Alok Vaid-Menon and Janani Balasubramanian. They refer to their performance #ItGetsBitter as an interruption\, which exists within the boundaries of spoken word\, stand-up comedy\, fashion\, and nursery rhymes. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes singer/songwriter Madeleine Peyroux to the Carnegie Lecture Hall. Beginning almost 20 years ago with her critically acclaimed debut album Dreamland\, Peyroux’s work continues to exist uniquely and comfortably at the intersection of jazz\, pop\, and blues. Beyond a wealth of original material\, she is also highly praised as an incredibly insightful interpreter of a wide range of material by many classic performers such as Billie Holiday\, Bob Dylan\, Bessie Smith\, and Leonard Cohen. \nThe performance features songs from Peyroux’s recording of Keep Me In Your Heart for A While – The Best of Madeleine Peyroux. The material is presented in an intimate trio configuration of voice\, guitar\, and bass (Madeleine Peyroux\, vocals and guitar; Jon Herington\, guitar; Barak Mori\, bass). The program presents a musical anthology of Peyroux’s nearly 20-year career.

Oldham will release the special holiday 7” Christmas Eve Can Kill You with Dawn McCarthy and a new full length record is planned for early ’13.  Opening the show is Title TK (artist Cory Arcangel\, musician and writer Alan Licht\, and artist and curator Howie Chen)\, self-described as “a banter-prone band” that has been referred to as “a cross between David Antin and Spinal Tap”.  And Licht also edited the recently published autobiography\, Will Oldham on Bonnie “Prince” Billy. \nDawn McCarthy & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy “Christmas Eve Can Kill You” from Drag City on Vimeo. \nIn anticipation of their forthcoming holiday single Christmas Eve Can Kill You\, old friends and collaborators Dawn McCarthy and Will Oldham present you with a gift: a video shot by Lara Miranda during the track’s Nashville recording sessions produced by David Ferguson at Butcher Shop Studio\, as well as footage depicting the spirit of the project from McCreary County\, KY. From the Seeger Sisters to Mariah Carey\, Elvis to Sinatra\, from Johnny Cash to Merle Haggard; there is a remarkably strong tradition of fa-la-la-ing in popular music–to say nothing of the rich tradition of the holiday music video. Yet this is definitely not what one expects to see in a holiday music video–there’s no snow\, no presents\, no sacrificial goose or other consumable indulgences; but rather the tenets of what a pre-capitalist Christmas looks like. The elements at the core of why people celebrate holidays to begin with– friendship\, collaboration\, warmth\, rejuvenation\, and joy. \nChristmas Eve Can Kill You also offers a foreshadowing glimpse at Oldham and McCarthy’s forthcoming full-length record of songs they learned from Everly Brothers records; a project inspired by the songstress’ young daughters’ love of the rhythm and blues duo.
