DESCRIPTION:The Warhol partners with Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for the Arts in Society and School of Art to present DarkMatter\, a trans South Asian performance art duo comprised of Alok Vaid-Menon and Janani Balasubramanian. They refer to their performance #ItGetsBitter as an interruption\, which exists within the boundaries of spoken word\, stand-up comedy\, fashion\, and nursery rhymes. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes back spoken word artist\, musician\, actor\, author\, radio talk show host\, and iconic cultural gadfly\, Henry Rollins. Primarily best known as the lead singer for the intense hardcore Rollins Band and the seminal punk band Black Flag\, Rollins has also written more than 20 books\, runs his own publishing company and record label 2.13.61\, and hosts a weekly radio show on KCRW. His spoken word performances—“talking shows\,” as he calls them—are a seamless (yet seemingly extemporaneous) mix of humor and outrage; pop culture\, political commentary\, and personal anecdote; healthy skepticism and rugged optimism. \nVIP tickets include a Meet & Greet with Henry Rollins. DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes singer/songwriter Madeleine Peyroux to the Carnegie Lecture Hall. Beginning almost 20 years ago with her critically acclaimed debut album Dreamland\, Peyroux’s work continues to exist uniquely and comfortably at the intersection of jazz\, pop\, and blues. Beyond a wealth of original material\, she is also highly praised as an incredibly insightful interpreter of a wide range of material by many classic performers such as Billie Holiday\, Bob Dylan\, Bessie Smith\, and Leonard Cohen. \nThe performance features songs from Peyroux’s recording of Keep Me In Your Heart for A While – The Best of Madeleine Peyroux. The material is presented in an intimate trio configuration of voice\, guitar\, and bass (Madeleine Peyroux\, vocals and guitar; Jon Herington\, guitar; Barak Mori\, bass). The program presents a musical anthology of Peyroux’s nearly 20-year career.

Will Oldham)\, through a collaboration with the Carnegie Museum of Art\, in conjunction with the exhibition\, Cory Arcangel: Masters.  Don’t miss this unique evening with the Drag City Records stalwart who\, over the past quarter-century\, has made an idiosyncratic journey through\, and an indelible mark on\, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema. Oldham will release the special holiday 7” Christmas Eve Can Kill You with Dawn McCarthy and a new full length record is planned for early ’13.  Opening the show is Title TK (artist Cory Arcangel\, musician and writer Alan Licht\, and artist and curator Howie Chen)\, self-described as “a banter-prone band” that has been referred to as “a cross between David Antin and Spinal Tap”.  And Licht also edited the recently published autobiography\, Will Oldham on Bonnie “Prince” Billy. \nDawn McCarthy & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy “Christmas Eve Can Kill You” from Drag City on Vimeo. \nIn anticipation of their forthcoming holiday single Christmas Eve Can Kill You\, old friends and collaborators Dawn McCarthy and Will Oldham present you with a gift: a video shot by Lara Miranda during the track’s Nashville recording sessions produced by David Ferguson at Butcher Shop Studio\, as well as footage depicting the spirit of the project from McCreary County\, KY. From the Seeger Sisters to Mariah Carey\, Elvis to Sinatra\, from Johnny Cash to Merle Haggard; there is a remarkably strong tradition of fa-la-la-ing in popular music–to say nothing of the rich tradition of the holiday music video. Yet this is definitely not what one expects to see in a holiday music video–there’s no snow\, no presents\, no sacrificial goose or other consumable indulgences; but rather the tenets of what a pre-capitalist Christmas looks like. The elements at the core of why people celebrate holidays to begin with– friendship\, collaboration\, warmth\, rejuvenation\, and joy. \nChristmas Eve Can Kill You also offers a foreshadowing glimpse at Oldham and McCarthy’s forthcoming full-length record of songs they learned from Everly Brothers records; a project inspired by the songstress’ young daughters’ love of the rhythm and blues duo. In true Everly style\, the video showcases harmony as a medium–which is eminently worthy of attention (and even adulation). DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is thrilled to welcome The Magnetic Fields back to Pittsburgh after their last appearance in 2002\, the same year their side project\, Future Bible Heroes\, performed in the Museum’s intimate theater. The band is led by Stephin Merritt\, considered one of the most talented songwriter’s of his generation. Beyond writing and recording numerous albums\, Merritt has also written songs for the books of Lemony Snicket\, composed music for stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline\, and was the subject of the feature documentary Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields. The band is on tour supporting their tenth album\, Love at the Bottom of the Sea\, which marks the return to Merge Records\, which released their break-out 3 CD collection 69 Love Songs\, after three releases on Nonesuch. Emma Straub\, author of Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures and Other People We Married\, opens the show with a solo reading.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: An Evening with The Psychedelic Furs
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is pleased to present An Evening with The Psychedelic Furs at the Carnegie Lecture Hall in Oakland. Led by the smoky vocals and poetic lyrics of songwriter and front man Richard Butler\, The Psychedelic Furs emerged out of the late 70’s UK punk scene and made their debut on the U.S. album charts with 1981’s Talk Talk Talk. One of the singles from that album\, Pretty in Pink\, would become a bona-fide teenage anthem after being re-recorded for the platinum-selling soundtrack of the 1986 John Hughes film of the same name. After seven studio albums with other hits such as Love My Way\, Heaven\, and The Ghost In You\, the band took a hiatus through most of the 90’s and resumed touring in 2000.

DESCRIPTION:Spoken word artist\, musician\, actor\, author\, radio talk show host and iconic cultural gadfly\, Henry Rollins\, is above all else a self-described “workaholic\,” and best known as the lead singer for the intense hardcore Rollins Band and the seminal punk band Black Flag.  Rollins has written more than 20 books\, runs his own publishing company and record label 2.13.61.\, and hosts a weekly radio show on L.A.’s renowned NPR affiliate KCRW.  Rollins is also currently a regular columnist for LA Weekly\, and is hosting National Geographic’s new three-part series Animal Underworld with Henry Rollins.  Described by the New York Daily News as “some of the most provocative chit-chat around\,” Henry’s spoken word performances – “talking shows\,” as he calls them – are a seamless (yet seemingly extemporaneous) mix of humor and outrage; pop culture\, political commentary and personal anecdote; healthy skepticism and rugged optimism. \n“Diatribist\, confessor\, provocateur\, humorist\, even motivational speaker…his is an enthusiastic and engaging chatter.” \n– Washington Post

DESCRIPTION:The Warhol and Carnegie Museum of Art welcome Malian virtuoso picker and musical visionary\, Bassekou Kouyate\, to the Carnegie Lecture Hall stage for his Pittsburgh debut. Kouyate leads the group Ngoni Ba\, featuring four ngonis (an ancestor of the banjo\, also referred to as a “spike lute”) all played by family members. Blurring traditional lines between West African and American blues and roots music\, Kouyate has performed with Bonnie Raitt\, Bono\, Taj Mahal and banjo maverick Bela Fleck. The group’s second CD I Speak Fula is out now on Sub Pop Records affiliate\, Next Ambience.
