DESCRIPTION:Please note: The Sound Series: Block Party is sold out and there will not be any tickets sold at the door. \nWe are pleased to present the third annual Sound Series: Block Party featuring an autumn evening of live music in a relaxed and festive environment outdoors\, as part of The Pop District. Even more food and beverages will be available for purchase on site\, along with hands-on t-shirt\, tote bag\, or poster making. Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of internationally touring artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum\, featuring Zenizen\, Helado Negro\, and headlined by Ethel Cain. \nSchedule\n5:30 p.m. Zenizen \nSinger\, songwriter\, and producer Zenizen (aka Opal Hoyt) opens the Block Party with a solo performance. Her music explores the fringes of experimental pop\, soul\, and funk\, layered with her rich alto voice. Outside of her work as Zenizen\, Hoyt boasts a sprawling resume that includes performance credits with Helado Negro\, Jordan Rakei\, and Okay Kaya. \n7 p.m. Helado Negro \nWe welcome back Helado Negro (aka Roberto Carlos Lange) in a trio format for the middle set at the Block Party. A South Florida native born to Ecuadorian immigrants\, Lange explores Latinx identity and pluralistic sensibilities in his personal and political avant pop music. His latest critically lauded album Far In\, and seventh-full length record\, is his first release on 4AD and features special guests Jen Wasner (Flock of Dimes) and Opal Hoyt’s (Zenizen). \n8:30 p.m. Ethel Cain \nSinger/songwriter Ethel Cain and her band headline the Block Party. Originally from Tallahassee\, FL\, Cain (aka Hayden Anhedonia) moved to Indiana in 2020\, where she recorded her EP Inbred\, and following the release her full-length debut\, Preacher’s Daughter last year. Cain now resides in Pittsburgh. Her unique sound and sensibility combine elements of rock and country with ethereal vocals and raw lyrics. And her collaborators include Lil Aaron\, who was featured on her single Michelle Pfeiffer and Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine\, who recorded a live version duet with Cain of Morning Elvis last year from the band’s Dance Fever album. Preacher’s Daughter has received several “best of” list mentions\, including the single American Teenager at No. 11 on Pitchfork’s “The 100 Best Songs of 2022”\, as well as being included on Barack Obama’s end of the year playlist. \n\nDoors open at 5 p.m. Entrance at Sandusky and Isabella Streets.\nThe Sound Series: Block Party is rain or shine. Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of internationally touring artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum on Isabella Street\, featuring Mexican Institute of Sound\, Sudan Archives\, and headlined by Kurt Vile and the Violators. \nSchedule\n5:30 p.m. Mexican Institute of Sound \nMexican Institute of Sound\, led by Camilo Lara\, blends his eclectic interests in Cumbia and a range of Latin American genres with infectious beat-driven arrangements and a DIY/punk and high energy aesthetic. The latest album Distrito Federal (2021) garnered much critical praise\, including NPR’s best albums of the year list\, and features collaborations with Dan The Automator (Gorillaz) a Graham Coxon (Blur)\, Duckwrth\, BIA\, Cuco and Banda Misteriosa.  \n7 p.m. Sudan Archives \nSudan Archives is a unique solo performer who has emerged as an inventive avant-garde violinist and experimental beatmaker who loops and layers her violin and vocals to create a new minimalist hybrid approach to blending classical\, West African\, and hip hop and R&B influences. She’s captivated audiences at festivals such as Coachella and Pitchfork with her hybrid sound\, sharing stages with St. Vincent\, Ibeyi\, and Michael Kiwanuka.  \n8:30 p.m. Kurt Vile and the Violators \nWe welcome back Philadelphia-based songwriter and guitarist Kurt Vile as headliner of our Block Party. With inspiration ranging from John Prine to Sonic Youth\, Vile has been honing his unique songwriting craft and inventive guitar style since the early days of co-founding War on Drugs with Adam Granduciel in 2005\, before focusing on his solo career and his band the Violators with a series of releases leading up to broader exposure with the album Wakin on a Pretty Daze on Matador Records in 2013. He has collaborated with a range of musicians including Steve Gunn\, Courtney Barnett\, and Cate Le Bon\, and his latest album\, Watch My Moves\, marks his major-label debut on Verve Records\, the label that coincidentally released the classic Velvet Underground and Nico album in 1967. \nAnd between sets\, enjoy the eclectic sounds of DJ Pandemic Pete. \n\nDoors open at 5 p.m. Entrance at Sandusky and Isabella Streets.\nThe Sound Series: Block Party is rain or shine. Presented by The Warhol’s Sound Series\, a varied roster of artists will perform on a stage adjacent to the museum on Isabella Street\, including Pastor Deryck Tines & the Lemington Chorale\, Tomberlin\, Andy Shauf\, 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, featuring Dean & Britta\, and Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500’s On Fire. \nEntrance at Federal and Isabella Streets. \nSchedule\n3 p.m. Pastor Deryck Tines & the Lemington Chorale \nWe kick off the day with a high-energy\, spiritually-energizing\, and soul-stirring set by Pastor Deryck Tines and Pittsburgh’s Lemington Chorale. Tines will lead this group of dynamic singers though a medley of gospel songs\, spirituals\, and hymns celebrating black history\, spirituality\, and soul\, from his recently released live album We Shall Overcome Someday. \n4:30 p.m. Tomberlin \nWe welcome singer/songwriter Tomberlin (aka Sarah Beth Tomberlin) for an intimate solo performance as part of tour with Andy Shauf\, supporting her latest EP Projections on Saddle Creek Records. Originally from Jacksonville\, Florida\, Tomberlin moved around a bit growing up as a result of her father’s work as a Baptist pastor. She moved to Louisville in 2017 and released her first album At Weddings\, featuring her sparse arrangements and vivid lyrics\, produced by Owen Pallett. \n6 p.m. Andy Shauf \nWe welcome the songwriter Andy Shauf\, and are pleased to reschedule his performance from June so that he and his band could be part of our Sound Series: Block Party\, as part of a tour supporting his most recent\, highly lauded album Neon Skyline on ANTI records. His music is often described as reflecting the Canadian prairie with a unique blend of hushed vocals\, vivid lyrics\, and intricately crafted arrangements\, drawing on influences such as Neil Young\, Wilco\, and Elliot Smith. \n7:30 p.m. 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, featuring Dean & Britta \nIn celebration of its 13th anniversary\, we’re thrilled to bring back\, 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests. The performance\, which consists of commissioned soundtracks by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips for a selection of Warhol’s silent film portraits\, toured extensively after its premiere in Pittsburgh in October 2008\, playing over 85 dates over eight years. The 13th anniversary tour will provide audiences with another opportunity to experience this critically lauded performance with newly digitized HD versions of the films. The project resulted in the first official release of early Warhol films on DVD\, which was produced in collaboration with Plexifilm. \n13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests\, a project jointly commissioned by The Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts 2008. \n9 p.m. Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500’s On Fire \nThe Warhol’s inaugural Sound Series: Block Party closes with a seamless transition from 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests to a special set of Galaxie 500’s seminal album On Fire\, performed by the same band\, featuring Dean Wareham\, Britta Phillips\, Anthony LaMarca\, and Matt Sumrow. Wareham\, who formed Galaxie 500 in 1987 and Luna in 1991\, has also recorded several albums with his wife Britta Phillips as Dean & Britta\, and beyond working with Andy Warhol’s films\, they have scored films such as The Squid & The Whale and Mistress America by Noah Baumbach. Most recently they released A Sentimental Education\, an album of covers\, and A Place of Greater Safety\, an EP of 6 instrumentals on Double Feature Records. \n\nThe Sound Series Block Party is rain or shine.
