SUMMARY:Sharif Bey: Homecoming Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public reception celebrating our exhibition Sharif Bey: Homecoming. Sharif Bey\, a Pittsburgh-born ceramic artist\, sculptor and educator creates complex sculptures inspired by modernism\, functional pottery and Oceanic and African art. His monumental ceramic sculptures will be exhibited alongside artwork by Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat from our permanent collection. All three artists engage deeply with themes of identity\, culture\, and societal commentary and their shared and diverging histories create dynamic dialogues on the complexity of American art.  \nHomecoming celebrates community arts education and highlights Pittsburgh’s enduring role as a crucible for artistic innovation\, continuing the city’s rich tradition of supporting local communities and artists—an essential factor in Sharif Bey’s development and emergence as a significant voice in contemporary art. \nLive music by Bey’s cousin\, Ublai Bey and his band\, Timeless.

SUMMARY:Night of Death and Disaster
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Night of Death and Disaster! Come dressed in your best macabre couture as we dive deep into Warhol’s darker side for a night of eerie revelry\, but help us protect our collection. No masks\, wings\, tails or other props that could bump the artwork. \n\nDJ set by Second Skin (Erica Scary & Huck Finn)\nStay tuned: More mayhem to be announced!\nPlease note: This event is for ages 21+.\n\nIn his Death and Disaster series\, Warhol explored the impact of images taken out of a journalistic context and framed\, through repetition\, as works of art. Some of the photographs that Warhol chose as source images for this series depict horrific scenes. Others focus on a narrative that may not be obvious\, but is symbolic of death and disaster nonetheless\, such as the Electric Chair and Jackie series. In all of these works\, Warhol repeated images to mirror the repetition evident in society through media and technology.
