SUMMARY:Sound Series: An Evening with Dawn of Midi
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Dawn of Midi\, a Brooklyn-based acoustic ensemble made up of Aakaash Israni from India on double bass\, Amino Belyamani from Morocco on piano\, and Qasim Naqvi from Pakistan on drums. The trio met at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles in 2006 and developed a unique musical aesthetic that can sound deceptively electronic and computer-generated\, involving repetition of phrases and entrancing rhythms. On the trio’s record Dysnomia (released by Erased Tapes)\, they favor composition over improvisation and employ rhythms from North and West African folk traditions. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. \nThis performance is standing room only.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Songhoy Blues
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol welcomes Songhoy Blues on its first North American tour. This young West African “desert blues” band takes its name from the Songhoy people of Mali. Band members Oumar Touré\, Aliou Touré\, Garba Touré\, and Nathanial “Nat” Dembele grew up keenly interested in American hip hop and R&B and cite B.B. King\, Jimi Hendrix\, and Ali Farka Toure as key influences. Their debut album Music in Exile was produced by Nick Zimmer of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This performance co-presented with Pandemic\, and it is standing room only. Free parking is available in The Warhol lot.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Sound Series: Bedroom Community Tour featuring Nico Muhly\, Ben Frost\, Sam Amidon\, and Valgeir Sigurðsson
DESCRIPTION:The Bedroom Community Whale Watching 2016 Tour is canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. \nThe adventurous and eclectic Icelandic Bedroom Community record label tour—its first-ever in the U.S.—stops at The Warhol theater. The 2016 Whale Watching tour artists include Nico Muhly\, Ben Frost\, Sam Amidon\, and Valgeir Sigurðsson. Founded in 2006\, a diverse array of like-minded artists from around the globe converged at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavík\, Iceland\, to record their music. This is the label’s third Whale Watching tour. \n“The Whale Watching Tour is an opportunity to manifest what we\, as a record label and a collective of disparate musical personalities\, do behind the closed doors of the studio. To create something uniquely belonging to the live experience from source material that is very familiar to us. These shows are fueled by joyful energy and appreciation for each other but also tension\, blood and sweat that makes it all the more rewarding at the end of the day.” — Valgeir Sigurðsson \nThe performance is co-presented with the Music on the Edge series of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Music.

SUMMARY:CAPA Antithesis
DESCRIPTION:This concert showcases the results of an interdisciplinary collaboration called the Playing Pictures Project. CAPA Antithesis worked with five Visual Arts students at Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 to create colorful graphic scores. These scores are then read\, interpreted and transformed into musical compositions by small sub-groups drawn from the larger ensemble. Each work will be projected for the audience to see during performance. \nCAPA Antithesis is the groundbreaking contemporary music ensemble of Pittsburgh CAPA 6– 12. The goal of the ensemble is to perform music of our time and encourage the composition and performance of student works that mine the rich history of modern music: classical\, jazz\, and the avant-garde. Formed in 2005 by saxophonist Ben Opie\, the group performed in the 2008 Braxton plays Pittsburgh Festival honoring composer and improviser Anthony Braxton. It has opened for several national artists at galleries and performance spaces throughout the city\, and in 2012 it performed at the Hear/Now Festival of New Sound at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater. Composer and oboist Lenny Young became the fourth music director of CAPA Antithesis in 2012.

SUMMARY:OUT OF THE BOX: Time Capsule opening with Cataloguer Erin Byrne\, Chief Archivist Matt Wrbican\, and special guest Benjamin Liu
DESCRIPTION:Chief Archivist Matt Wrbican\, Cataloguer Erin Byrne\, and former Warhol assistant Benjamin Liu open Time Capsule 71\, one of Warhol’s 610 Time Capsules that is filled with books\, a few of which are displayed in the exhibition Warhol By the Book. Warhol was an avid collector of art\, Fiestaware\, photographs\, newspapers\, dental molds\, and especially the minutiae of his daily life. In 1974\, Warhol began filling the first of his Time Capsules with source material\, correspondence\, and clothing. The Time Capsules reflect more than Warhol’s personal life; they act as an insightful snapshot of the time and contain a wealth of information for researchers.

SUMMARY:In Discussion: Chief Archivist Matt Wrbican with author and food historian Susan Rossi-Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of the limited edition 1959 cookbook Wild Raspberries\, which Warhol illustrated. Susan Rossi-Wilcox and Matt Wrbican co-curated an exhibition on this book at The Warhol in 2008. Created by Warhol and close friend Suzie Frankfurt\, Wild Raspberries whimsically parodies popular French recipes that were in vogue with American middle- and upper-class tastes of the time\, highlighted by Warhol’s humorous illustrations.
