SUMMARY:Sound Series: Soy Sos with Gladstone Deluxe: Dub Corridor
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Due to the weather conditions\, this performance will take place in The Warhol entrance space. \nOur Sound Series is pleased to partner with PearlArts\, a multidisciplinary arts organization in Pittsburgh (founded by choreographer Staycee Pearl and sound designer/producer Herman Pearl)\, on a monthly summer series focused on the reggae offshoots/evolutions of dub\, roots\, dancehall\, sound system culture and beyond. Each collaboration will be a different take on these elements\, drawing from prepared materials and improvisations. \nWe welcome Soy Sos (aka Herman Pearl) and collaborator Gladstone Deluxe for a special site specific performance\, Dub Corridor\, developed with our renovated side alley\, Silver Street\, in mind. The duo will experiment with the unique acoustics of this intimate urban alley turned patio/beer garden\, with an exploratory\, electronic\, beat-driven\, and dub-inspired set for a relaxed\, outdoor summer evening. This performance is an extension of PearlArts’ SYNCHRONIZED: with Soy Sos series. \nGladstone Butler is a New York based artist working with percussion and electronics. His work takes the form of recorded media\, installations and performance. While percussion is often only tied to the act of striking an object\, Gladstone sees percussion as an expressive manifestation of time architectures that bind humans\, framed by the larger rhythmical walls of sun-rise and set. In Gladstone’s work\, musical rhythm becomes a unique tool for celebrating nonlinearity\, asymmetry and difference in society. \nHerman Pearl/Soy Sos is a sound designer\, audio engineer\, and producer. He sees sound as an actual physical force\, literally moving the air around and through us. This was impressed upon him in his early encounters with Jamaican sound system\, dub and bass culture in the late 80s. It informs everything he does from the composition\, production\, and mixing of the music to the design and configuration of the playback systems for performances. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nThis performance is primarily standing room only. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Malian singer and guitarist\, Vieux Farka Touré. The son of Grammy-winning musician Ali Farka Touré\, Vieux’s globally-minded music blends traditional African melodies and instrumentation with modern electric guitar and rock structures. His 2017 release\, Samba (meaning second son in his native Songhai) was recorded in front of a live studio audience in Woodstock\, New York. Last year\, Vieux collaborated with Houston-based psych-rock band Khruangbin on the album Ali\, which reimagines a selection of songs by his father\, Ali Farka Touré. And he also released Les Racines\, which translates as ‘the roots’ and represents a deep reconnection with the Songhai music of Northern Mali. SUMMARY:Sound Series: Al Cerulo: Amplified Perception
DESCRIPTION:Al Cerulo was given his first pair of drumsticks by his father at the age of seven and has never looked back. He has been praised for his work as a musician and educator both nationally and internationally. Al is an advocate for the commissioning and performing of new works by both established and up-and-coming composers to help move forward and breathe new life into the art. \nAmplified Perception is a seventy-five-minute soundscape sculpted through the music of five composers whose compositional styles are each uniquely beautiful: Jude Traxler\, Eve Beglarian\, Mathew Rosenblum\, Paula Matthusen\, and Randy Gibson. Writing for a single voice\, each composer enhances the acoustic timbre of their instrument with live amplification and/or digital processing. Featuring sound design by Jude Traxler and a prelude and postlude of pre-recorded media by Cerulo and Echo Artifact\, this journey will take the listener through various sound worlds – from the ambient to periodic to unearthly.\n \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Amirtha Kidambi & Darius Jones: Angels & Demons
DESCRIPTION:We welcome longtime collaborators Amirtha Kidambi (voice) and Darius Jones (alto sax) who join sonic and compositional forces to materialize Angels & Demons\, musical adaptations of cosmological writings by iconic composer and bandleader Sun Ra. The duo formed to honor the intellectual\, literary\, and spiritual contribution of Sun Ra\, as a philosopher and teacher. Dancing between Ra’s prophetic poetic verse\, abstract phonemes and syllables\, sound\, noise\, tone\, melody\, and rhythmic interplay\, Jones and Kidambi use their unique compositional and improvisatory voices to amplify Ra’s poetry to contemporary audiences. \nAmirtha Kidambi is an educator\, activist\, and organizer\, informed by anti-racism\, decolonization\, and anti-capitalism\, and is co-founder and co-organizer of South Asian Artists in Diaspora and Musicians Against Police Brutality. She is the creative force behind Elder Ones and topped the categories of “Rising Star Vocalist”\, “Rising Star Composer”\, and “Rising Star Jazz Group” in the Downbeat Critics Poll for 2019. \nDarius Jones has created a recognizable voice as a critically acclaimed saxophonist and composer by embracing individuality and innovation in the tradition of Black music. He has been awarded the Van Lier Fellowship\, Jerome Foundation Artist-in-Residence and commission\, French-American Jazz Exchange Award\, and a Fromm Music Foundation commission from Harvard University. Jones has received acclaim for not only his studio albums featuring music and images evocative of Black Futurism\, but also for his commissioned work as a composer throughout the United States and Canada. \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome Portland\, Oregon-based folk singer/songwriter Haley Heynderickx for the first time on a tour supporting her debut album\, I Need to Start a Garden\, released by Mama Bird Recording Co. Heynderickx will be joined by The Westerlies as her band; a New York-based brass quartet who according to NPR Music “explore jazz\, roots and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both ‘folk-like and composerly\, lovely and intellectually rigorous’”. Drawing from her religious Philipino-American upbringing and a range folk music\, including guitarists such Leo Kottke and John Fahey\, Heynderickx crafts her introspective songs. It was also the inspiration for American musicologist Brian Shimkovitz’s blog Awesome Tapes From Africa launched in 2002\, and the cassette was eventually released as an LP in 2015. Ata Kak’s unique sound has been described as a hybrid of highlife\, rap\, funk\, hip-hop\, and electronica\, presented with the sweaty passion of a Prince record and the lo-fi recording charm of early Chicago house music. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our exhibition Marisol and Warhol Take New York\, we are pleased to present the newly commissioned multi-media performance Songs for Marisol by Roberto Carlos Lange (aka Helado Negro). The performance will consist of original compositions combined with a selection of Andy Warhol’s films featuring the artist Marisol. A South Florida native born to Ecuadorian immigrants\, Lange is best known by his stage name\, Helado Negro. He explores Latinx identity and pluralistic sensibilities in his personal and political avant pop music. His latest album Far In was released on October 22 on 4AD. He is also the recipient of the 2019 Grants to Artists award in Music from the Foundation for the Contemporary Arts. Writing for a single voice\, each composer enhances the acoustic timbre of their instrument with live amplification and/or digital processing. SUMMARY:Naama Tsabar: Live Performance
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live performance by artist Naama Tsabar\, whose work is featured in our current exhibition Fantasy America. Motivated by her film Stranger\, Tsabar and sonic collaborator Kristin Mueller negotiate the use of an instrument made from two attached chromed plated electric guitars. The musicians will explore the use of the object both separately and together\, resulting in a dance that moves through gentle and violent states. Tsabar pushes against gender norms\, especially those that privilege male musicians\, to examine female empowerment and liberation. \nNaama Tsabar (b. 1982\, Israel) lives and works in New York. She received her MFA from Columbia University in 2010. Solo exhibitions and performances have been presented at the Guggenheim Museum\, Museum of Art and Design\, The High Line Art\, Nasher Museum\, Kunsthuas Baselland\, Palais De Tokyo\, Prospect New Orleans\, and Tel Aviv Museum of Art\, among others. Selected group exhibitions include The Jewish Museum of Belgium\, Ballroom Marfa\, and Greater New York at MoMA PS1. He creates speculative fantasies that peer into otherworldly portals and voids and has most notably exhibited with the Institute for New Feeling at MoMA’s PopRally (New York City)\, Recess (New York City)\, Ballroom Marfa (Marfa\, Texas)\, Whitechapel Gallery (London)\, Black Cube (Denver\, Colorado)\, the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles)\, and the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles). \nAnna Azizzy\nAnna Azizzy processes their identity by performing absurd and hilarious exaggerations of their life and wishes. Their practice spans many mediums\, including performance art\, video art\, experimental music\, and gymnastics–most often working with wonky green screen animation\, flamboyant characters\, and soft sculpture. Anna is from Pittsburgh\, where they earned their BA in Experimental Theater and Sculptural Performance at Carnegie Mellon University\, work various art gigs\, coach gymnastics\, and host the Side Split Variety Show. \nAmelia Bande\nAmelia Bande is a Brooklyn-based artist\, writer and performer from Chile. Her work has been shown at Artists Space\, The Poetry Project\, Storm King Arts Center\, Tang Museum\, MoMA Library\, MIX NYC\, Participant Inc.\, BOFFO Performance Festival\, and more. She has been an artist in residence at WORM Filmwerkplaats\, The Shandaken Project\, Yaddo and FIAR. Her chapbook The Clothes We Wear was published by Belladonna in 2017. They received their professional diploma in Performance Studies working with identity\, nationalism\, and conflict at the Srishti School of Art\, Design\, and Technology and are currently an MFA candidate at the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. Tsohil currently makes installation\, photographs\, and video to investigate natural mechanisms and passage of time. These studies aid their current thesis of the thingness of ‘nothing’. \nJesse Factor\nJesse Factor’s solo work is consistently recognized for physical virtuosity\, dramaturgical rigor\, and creative audacity. In Pittsburgh\, Jesse has presented work at PEARLpresents (New Hazlett)\, Fail-Safe Performance Series (Glitter Box) and DONATELLA Queer Variety Show (Arcade Comedy Theater). Factor’s ongoing Marthagany: The Spectre-Acle series has been presented at House of Yes (New York City)\, Boston Contemporary Dance Festival (Boston)\, City Center Studios (New York City)\, Flyover Festival (Iowa)\, Midwest RADfest (Michigan)\, and OUTsider Fest (Texas). \nJoseph Hall\nJoseph Hall is the TQ Live! host\, and a black\, queer\, transracial adoptee\, podcast lover\, creator\, critic\, and youngest of five. He is Deputy Director at BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance as well as a producer\, curator\, and performer working in New York City and Pittsburgh. She earned her BA in Creative Writing from Allegheny College. Her poetry deals with the physical and emotional legacy of trauma\, and the intersecting history of her identity as a black\, lesbian\, woman through themes of the grotesque\, incantations\, and folklore. Her work has been published by Argot Magazine\, Public Source\, Palette Poetry\, and Slush Pile Magazine. When she is not writing she enjoys having intimate conversations with the things that puzzle and delight her\, admiring spiders\, watching horror movies\, and hunting for figs. \nSuzie Silver\nSuzie Silver creates art that alludes to the capacity for desire to disrupt social boundaries and imagine new futures. Her well-known early videos\, Freebird and A Spy are canonical works of queer video art. Silver’s videos have been screened at over 100 festivals on five continents. Her ongoing collaboration\, Fairy Fantastic! a fairy and folk tale video series for gender non-conforming kids of all ages\, has screened at festivals in Belarus\, London\, Portugal\, Romania and Australia. \nGinger Brooks Takahashi\nGinger Brooks Takahashi’s collaborative project-based\, socially enraged practice is an extension of feminist spaces and queer inquiry\, actively building community and nurturing alternative forms of information distribution. She is co-founder of queer and feminist journal LTTR; projet MOBILIVRE BOOKMOBILE project; the touring musical act MEN; and General Sisters. She has presented work at the Oakland Museum of California\, 2019; Jewish Museum\, 2016; Tensta Konsthall\, 2015; Brooklyn Museum\, 2013; Museo Tamayo\, 2010; New Museum\, 2009; and Serpentine Gallery\, 2008. She received her BA from Oberlin College and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program in 2007.
