SUMMARY:Barbara Rubin & the Exploding NY Underground (2018) with director Chuck Smith and executive producer Elizabeth Murray Finkelstein in person
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol takes visitor and staff health and safety seriously. In an abundance of caution\, this event has been canceled. \nThe Barbara Rubin & the Exploding NY Underground (2018) film screening has been postponed. Once a rescheduled date is confirmed\, we will update this page with that information\, and will contact those previously registered to attend with the new date. For those registered\, your current tickets will be honored on the rescheduled date. \nUnderground filmmaker Barbara Rubin’s 1964 art-porn masterpiece Christmas on Earth\, made when she was only 18 years old\, shattered creative and sexist boundaries and shocked NYC’s experimental film scene. Working with Jonas Mekas at the Filmmaker’s Coop\, Rubin was instrumental in creating NYC’s thriving underground film community and a rare female voice in a world of powerful men. A rebellious Zelig of the Sixties\, she introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to the Kabbalah. But beyond shaping the spirit of the Sixties\, Barbara was seeking the deeper meaning of life. After retiring to a farm with Allen Ginsberg\, she shocked everyone by becoming a Hasidic Jew. How and why did one of the 1960’s freest spirits submit to a religious life?  For years\, 94-year-old filmmaker Jonas Mekas has saved all of Barbara’s letters and cherished her memory. Working with Mekas’ footage and rare clips from our archives\, the film takes us inside the world and mind of Barbara Rubin; a woman who truly believed that film could change the world and who then vanished into obscurity. \nPlease note this film contains explicit content and adult subject matter.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Beyond Microtonal Music Festival featuring Del Sol String Quartet and FretX Guitar Duo
DESCRIPTION:Hailed by Gramophone as “masters of all musical things they survey” and two-time top winner of the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming\, the Del Sol String Quartet is a leading force in 21st century chamber music. Del Sol’s collaborative performance projects and chamber music programs explore narratives and cultures from around the world\, reflecting the stories and sounds of the Pacific Rim as vibrantly as those heard in European concert halls or East Coast art spaces. \nTouted as a “gifted young guitarist” by the New York Times\, and “a guitarist to keep an eye on” by the Washington Post\, Mak Grgic is emerging as a star on the worldwide stage. An expansive and adventurous repertoire attests to his versatility and wide-ranging interests. From the ethnic music of his native Balkans to extreme avant-garde and microtonal music\, his roles as soloist\, collaborator and recording artist are fueled by curiosity\, imagination and boundless energy. \nGuitarist Daniel Lippel\, called an “exciting soloist” by the New York Times and “precise and sensitive” by the Boston Globe\, has carved out a unique and diverse career that ranges through solo and chamber music performances\, innovative commissioning and recording projects\, and performances in diverse contexts. He has premiered more than fifty new solo and chamber works\, many written for him\, recording several on the independent label he co-founded and directs\, New Focus Recordings.\n \n\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\n\n

SUMMARY:Revelation: A Conversation on Andy Warhol and Religion
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of a prominent and prolific career\, Andy Warhol both pictured religious subjects and practiced his religious faith. Yet in 20th century histories of modern American art\, religion is largely excluded. Warhol was perhaps doubly excluded\, as a gay man\, and a believing Christian\, whose identity in the art world and in American society was made complicated by those identities. \nThis conversation between Erika Doss\, professor of American studies at the University of Notre Dame\, and Paula Kane\, professor of religious studies at the University of Pittsburgh\, considers what religion meant to Warhol\, how his religious beliefs shaped and directed his art\, and why religion “matters” in the history of American modernism. \nRegistration is required. \nDoors open at 6 p.m. \nPresented in conjunction with the exhibition Andy Warhol: Revelation.

SUMMARY:Screening of Making Montgomery Clift with Directors Robert A. Clift and Hillary Demmon
DESCRIPTION:We present the Pittsburgh premiere of the documentary\, Making Montgomery Clift (2018)\, about the accomplished and influential Hollywood actor. Known for bucking traditions on and off screen\, countless biographies have reduced Clift to labels like “tragically self-destructive” and “tormented” because of his queer sexuality. Now\, directors Robert Clift—Montgomery’s nephew—and Hillary Demmon rigorously re-examine these flawed narratives through the eyes of those who knew him. Drawing on interviews with family and loved ones\, as well as a rich collection of unreleased archival materials from both Montgomery and his brother\, Brooks Clift\, this fresh portrait of the actor’s passions\, contributions\, and commitment to living and working in his own way gives one of Hollywood’s underappreciated legends his due. Following the screening\, filmmakers Clift and Demmon will participate in a Q&A. \n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: serpentwithfeet
DESCRIPTION:We welcome vocalist and performance artist\, serpentwithfeet (aka Josiah Wise) on a tour supporting his debut full-length album\, soil\, co-released by Tri Angle Records and Secretly Canadian. With a unique aesthetic that blends elements of gospel music of his youth and more minimal and ambient composition\, Wise had this to say about the lyrical nature of the new record: “I remember growing up there was language for how men and women interact…I hate to say it\, but I think there is still a lot of shame around two black men dating and loving on each other and I was very aware of that. While working on soil\, i was exploring and trying to make sense of my needs and my love language… I’m excited about the way things naturally come out of my body. I am always going to embrace discipline and streamlining. But I’m in a space at the moment where I don’t need or desire the corset. It’s time for expansiveness.” \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Princess
DESCRIPTION:We welcome the performance duo\, Princess\, comprised of Alexis Gideon and Michael O’Neill (JD Samson & MEN)\, who use music as the backbone of a multi-disciplinary practice that often explores issues of queerness and the concept of masculinity. Simultaneously gay\, straight\, queer\, masculine\, and feminine\, Princess embodies the fluidity and coherence between the seemingly contradictory. The duo’s Out There is a concept video album and live performance. Released song-by-song\, each episode stands alone and moves the narrative forward to a conclusion. Out There reclaims the original power of MTV by building on the long legacy of concept albums like Ziggy Stardust and Deltron 3030. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.
