DESCRIPTION:We welcome Hand Habits\, the songwriting outlet of guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Meg Duffy\, to our intimate theater. Recorded in Los Angeles alongside co-producer Joseph Lorge\, Hand Habits most recent album\, Blue Reminder\, features collaborations with a range of musicians including Alan Wyffels\, Gregory Uhlmann (Duffy’s collaborator in Duffy x Uhlmann)\, Blake Mills\, Tim Carr\, Daniel Aged\, and Joshua Johnson and Anna Butters of SML. This collection of songs largely eschew the more insular nature of earlier Hand Habits records\, instead veering into the guitar-forward vibe of 90’s indie rock. Duffy has also performed extensively with Kevin Morby’s band and as a touring member of Perfume Genius. Moderated by Emma Riva and Caitlin Bruce with Q&A from the audience. \nHemispheric Conversations: Urban Art Project (HCUAP\, pronounced\, “hiccup”) seeks to create platforms for conversation and education about urban art production (graffiti\, street art\, and muralism\, among other genres) to explore aesthetic and historical connections between post-industrial cities. Since 2016 they have sustained programming that focused on the intercultural exchange between the post-industrial cities like Pittsburgh\, Chicago\, and León Guanajuato\, Mexico. \n\nDoors open at 5 p.m.\n\nMusa71 a graffiti writer from Barcelona who started doing graffiti in 1989. She has been painting since then\, developing her art in the street\, focusing in letters and the use of colors to transmit emotions. She is also the founder of the Breaking Down the Rules podcast\, which provides crucial education on the history of graffiti. \nHarry Bones\, from Sabadell\, Spain\, started doing graffiti in 2001. He is a multidisciplinary artist known for his unmistakable style that fuses graffiti art\, illustration\, and chromatic mastery\, creating captivating works ranging from hyperdetailed to minimalist. It‘s his first album with producer Kramer since Galaxie 500’s This Is Our Music (1990)\, and it was recorded in six days in Los Angeles. It features eight new songs\, drawing on influences such as Bacharach\, Gainsbourg\, and Norma Tanega plus covers of Nico and Mayo Thompson. DESCRIPTION:We welcome the Bristol-based Tara Clerkin Trio\, on a tour supporting their 2023 EP\, On the Turning Ground\, released on the U.K. record label\, World of Echo. Since Clerkin formed the experimental trio with Patrick Benjamin and Sunny-Joe Paradisos in 2020\, they have been cultivating their unique hybrid aesthetic that combines elements of folk\, dub\, and psychedelia\, as part of Bristol’s underground music scene. In a review in The Wire\, the band is described sonically as\, “Drifting from dubby minimalism to smudged acid jazz\, Tara’s stark and tuneful voice acts as the vehicle for her concise poetic lyricism. The group coalesce disparate influences into a cohesive sound\, reflecting a romantic view of a familiar world.” They visit the intimate Warhol theater just after their appearance at the acclaimed Big Ears Festival in Knoxville\, Tennessee. DESCRIPTION:We welcome songwriter and guitarist\, Jake Xerxes Fussell\, who has distinguished himself as one of his generation’s preeminent interpreters of traditional (and not so traditional) “folk” songs. By recontextualizing ancient vernacular songs and sources of the American South\, he allows them to breathe and speak for themselves and for himself; he alternately inhabits them and allows them to inhabit him. His latest album\, When I’m Called (Fat Possum Records) was produced by James Elkington and mixed by Tucker Martine. In addition to Elkington\, it features the playing of Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station)\, Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver\, Califone)\, and others. Blake Mills contributes guitars on several tracks. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to partner with Pittsburgh International Classic Theatre (PICT) to present a one-evening special preview of the play\, Andy Warhol’s Tomato\, in the museum‘s intimate theater\, before it begins its run at Carnegie Stage from September 20–October 6. \nIt’s 1946 in Pittsburgh. A rebellious art student at Carnegie Tech\, eighteen year old Andrew Warhola (later known as Andy Warhol)\, finds himself unexpectedly in the basement of a working class bar owned by Mario “Bones” Bonino\, a second generation Italian American from McKeesport. Over the course of the summer\, Andy and Bones form an unlikely friendship that surprises them both.  \nEnjoying critically acclaimed productions in Los Angeles and Chicago\, this tender and beautiful play examines the war between the urban-LGBTQ+ lifestyle and Pittsburgh’s blue collar sensibilities\, reminding us that division can be bridged by our fundamental need to create. As Bones says in the play: “There is beauty in the mundane”. Written by Vince Melocchi. Directed by Elizabeth Elias Huffman. Featuring Johnny Patalano as Mario Bonino and Matt Henderson as Andy Warhol. \nVince Melocchi\, playwright\, was born and raised in McKeesport. She works in film\, television\, and theater.  \nMatt Henderson (Andy Warhol)\, returns to PICT after appearing in their productions of The Old Curiosity Shop\, Romeo & Juliet\, and The Lion in Winter. His most recent roles were in Angels in America with Elsewhere Theatre Company and in Witness for The Prosecution at Prime Stage. SUMMARY:Sound Series: Hatis Noit with special guest Morgan Stewart
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Japanese vocal performer\, Hatis Noit\, hailing from Shiretoko in Hokkaido who now resides in London. Hatis Noit’s accomplished range is astonishingly self-taught\, inspired by everything she could find from Gagaku—Japanese classical music—and operatic styles\, Bulgarian and Gregorian chanting\, to avant-garde and pop vocalists. The name Hatis Noit itself is taken from Japanese folklore\, meaning the stem of the lotus flower. She has recently appeared at various festivals across Europe including David Lynch’s Manchester International Festival takeover. NPR had this to say about her debut full-length album Aura (2022): “Aura is a bold\, impressive debut which signals—loud\, clear and creatively—that when Hatis Noit opens her throat to sing\, we should be listening”. Pittsburgh-based ambient\, experimental musician\, Morgan Stewart opens the evening. Stewart draws on a wide array of influences and synthesizes them into a form that is uniquely hers\, manipulating traditional song structures to deliver an environment that is at once familiar and revelatory. This set will see a deconstruction of previous work to create wholly new arrangements by building layers of texture of voice and sound. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n
