DESCRIPTION:We welcome the Bristol-based Tara Clerkin Trio\, on a tour supporting their 2023 EP\, On the Turning Ground\, released on the U.K. record label\, World of Echo. Since Clerkin formed the experimental trio with Patrick Benjamin and Sunny-Joe Paradisos in 2020\, they have been cultivating their unique hybrid aesthetic that combines elements of folk\, dub\, and psychedelia\, as part of Bristol’s underground music scene. In a review in The Wire\, the band is described sonically as\, “Drifting from dubby minimalism to smudged acid jazz\, Tara’s stark and tuneful voice acts as the vehicle for her concise poetic lyricism. The group coalesce disparate influences into a cohesive sound\, reflecting a romantic view of a familiar world.” They visit the intimate Warhol theater just after their appearance at the acclaimed Big Ears Festival in Knoxville\, Tennessee. DESCRIPTION:We welcome songwriter and guitarist\, Jake Xerxes Fussell\, who has distinguished himself as one of his generation’s preeminent interpreters of traditional (and not so traditional) “folk” songs. By recontextualizing ancient vernacular songs and sources of the American South\, he allows them to breathe and speak for themselves and for himself; he alternately inhabits them and allows them to inhabit him. His latest album\, When I’m Called (Fat Possum Records) was produced by James Elkington and mixed by Tucker Martine. In addition to Elkington\, it features the playing of Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station)\, Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver\, Califone)\, and others. Blake Mills contributes guitars on several tracks. Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb provide backing vocals. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to partner with Pittsburgh International Classic Theatre (PICT) to present a one-evening special preview of the play\, Andy Warhol’s Tomato\, in the museum‘s intimate theater\, before it begins its run at Carnegie Stage from September 20–October 6. \nIt’s 1946 in Pittsburgh. A rebellious art student at Carnegie Tech\, eighteen year old Andrew Warhola (later known as Andy Warhol)\, finds himself unexpectedly in the basement of a working class bar owned by Mario “Bones” Bonino\, a second generation Italian American from McKeesport. Over the course of the summer\, Andy and Bones form an unlikely friendship that surprises them both.  \nEnjoying critically acclaimed productions in Los Angeles and Chicago\, this tender and beautiful play examines the war between the urban-LGBTQ+ lifestyle and Pittsburgh’s blue collar sensibilities\, reminding us that division can be bridged by our fundamental need to create. As Bones says in the play: “There is beauty in the mundane”. Written by Vince Melocchi. Directed by Elizabeth Elias Huffman. Featuring Johnny Patalano as Mario Bonino and Matt Henderson as Andy Warhol. \nVince Melocchi\, playwright\, was born and raised in McKeesport. He currently writes and acts in theatre\, film and TV in Los Angeles. Other full-length plays include: Lions\, Julia\, Nice Things\, The Pact\, Buried in the Night\, Welcome to Santa. One act plays include: Think of me\, Bully\, Cow\, Last Snow\, Making Moves\, A Night of Lions\, The Last Linen Day. \nElizabeth Elias Huffman\, director\, is the new artistic director of PICT Classic Theatre. She has been an artistic director for five companies in New York\, Los Angeles\, and Portland and has directed\, taught\, and acted in theatre internationally and regionally around the country. She works in film\, television\, and theater.  \nMatt Henderson (Andy Warhol)\, returns to PICT after appearing in their productions of The Old Curiosity Shop\, Romeo & Juliet\, and The Lion in Winter. His most recent roles were in Angels in America with Elsewhere Theatre Company and in Witness for The Prosecution at Prime Stage. He has appeared in many theatre productions in Pittsburgh as well as film and TV. \nJohnny Patalano (Mario Bonino) made his Pittsburgh theater debut more than twenty years ago as Tony in Tony ‘N Tina’s Wedding in Station Square. SUMMARY:Sound Series: Hatis Noit with special guest Morgan Stewart
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Japanese vocal performer\, Hatis Noit\, hailing from Shiretoko in Hokkaido who now resides in London. Hatis Noit’s accomplished range is astonishingly self-taught\, inspired by everything she could find from Gagaku—Japanese classical music—and operatic styles\, Bulgarian and Gregorian chanting\, to avant-garde and pop vocalists. The name Hatis Noit itself is taken from Japanese folklore\, meaning the stem of the lotus flower. She has recently appeared at various festivals across Europe including David Lynch’s Manchester International Festival takeover. NPR had this to say about her debut full-length album Aura (2022): “Aura is a bold\, impressive debut which signals—loud\, clear and creatively—that when Hatis Noit opens her throat to sing\, we should be listening”. Pittsburgh-based ambient\, experimental musician\, Morgan Stewart opens the evening. Stewart draws on a wide array of influences and synthesizes them into a form that is uniquely hers\, manipulating traditional song structures to deliver an environment that is at once familiar and revelatory. This set will see a deconstruction of previous work to create wholly new arrangements by building layers of texture of voice and sound. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome guitarist\, composer\, and producer\, Patrick Higgins\, for a solo performance in the museum’s intimate theater. Known for his work in experimental and contemporary classical music\, “Higgins composes with a scholar’s historical perspective and a punk’s sense of abandon” (Pitchfork). DESCRIPTION:Our Sound Series is pleased to partner with Government Center\, neighborhood record store\, cafe and music venue on the North Side\, on a monthly summer series focused on local and regional musicians and bands. These outdoor performances will take place in the recently renovated Silver Street (alley adjacent to the museum) as an intimate outdoor venue under the stars.  \nWe welcome Jordan Montgomery\, acclaimed Pittsburgh-based rapper and entrepreneur who released his debut album Driving While Black in 2016 and started the label of the same name later that year. He has collaborated and shared stages with an accomplished array of artists including Rakim\, Beanie Sigel\, and Freeway. We also welcome Lys Scott\, first generation Thai American artist and vocalist\, who recorded her album squashed dreams & broken wings during quarantine. SUMMARY:Richie Unterberger: The Velvet Underground & Nico
DESCRIPTION:In connection with the exhibition\, The Velvet Underground & Nico: Scepter Studio Sessions\, we welcome Velvet Underground biographer Richie Unterberger\, who will discuss the recording of the band’s classic first album\, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). With audio and video clips\, as well as pictures from the period\, the presentation will focus on their April 1966 sessions at New York’s Scepter Studio\, mixed-down master tapes of which were recently discovered by The Warhol. Unterberger will highlight the birth of classics from their debut album like “Venus in Furs”\, “I’ll Be Your Mirror”\, and “All Tomorrow’s Parties”. \nRichie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books\, including White Light/White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day-By-Day. He’s currently researching his next book\, the full-length biography Do What You Fear Most: The History of the Velvet Underground\, which will be published by Omnibus Press in 2025\, and include information that’s come to light since the publication of his previous book on the band. He teaches rock history courses at several colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area\, including the University of San Francisco and the University of California at Berkeley. His most recent book\, published by Taschen in 2022\, is San Francisco: Portrait of a City. \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome the prodigiously gifted guitarist and songwriter\, Yasmin Williams\, to our intimate theater. Williams\, who began playing guitar in eighth grade after she beat the video game Guitar Hero 2 on expert level\, has quickly crafted a singular and unique sound through her innovative approach to fingerstyle and dulcimer traditions. Her 2021 release Urban Driftwood has received wide critical praise\, including this mention in a recent Rolling Stone review: “When 24-year-old instrumentalist Yasmin Williams plays guitar\, she conjures new possibilities and stories from the instrument.” And according to fellow recording artist and songwriter Valerie June\, “As a multi-instrumentalist\, her music fearlessly leads listeners through soundscapes and dimensions that reharmonize\, recenter\, and ground us during these challenging times.”\n \n\nYasmin Williams performance begins at 8 p.m.\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Adam Green: Solo performance and film screening: MDVL: 1\,000 Years of Dark Ages
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green\, for a unique evening featuring a special solo acoustic survey set of Moldy Peaches and Adam Green songs in our theater. The intimate performance will be preceded by a screening of his latest animated film MDVL: 1\,000 Years of Dark Ages\, written\, illustrated\, and narrated by Green and directed by animator Tom Bayne. The approximately 45-minute film\, a surrealist epic poem\, is about AI\, corporate communism\, the hard drive of the universe\, the phreaker wizard merlin\, a plant orgy\, mandatory corneal implants\, a crusade to Silicon Valley\, and the future world becoming medieval again. Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \nThe screening and performance will be followed by a Q & A with the filmmakers. \n\nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language.\nDoors open at 7 p.m.
