DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to partner with Pittsburgh International Classic Theatre (PICT) to present a one-evening special preview of the play\, Andy Warhol’s Tomato\, in the museum‘s intimate theater\, before it begins its run at Carnegie Stage from September 20–October 6. \nIt’s 1946 in Pittsburgh. A rebellious art student at Carnegie Tech\, eighteen year old Andrew Warhola (later known as Andy Warhol)\, finds himself unexpectedly in the basement of a working class bar owned by Mario “Bones” Bonino\, a second generation Italian American from McKeesport. Over the course of the summer\, Andy and Bones form an unlikely friendship that surprises them both.  \nEnjoying critically acclaimed productions in Los Angeles and Chicago\, this tender and beautiful play examines the war between the urban-LGBTQ+ lifestyle and Pittsburgh’s blue collar sensibilities\, reminding us that division can be bridged by our fundamental need to create. As Bones says in the play: “There is beauty in the mundane”. Written by Vince Melocchi. Directed by Elizabeth Elias Huffman. Featuring Johnny Patalano as Mario Bonino and Matt Henderson as Andy Warhol. \nVince Melocchi\, playwright\, was born and raised in McKeesport. He currently writes and acts in theatre\, film and TV in Los Angeles. Other full-length plays include: Lions\, Julia\, Nice Things\, The Pact\, Buried in the Night\, Welcome to Santa. One act plays include: Think of me\, Bully\, Cow\, Last Snow\, Making Moves\, A Night of Lions\, The Last Linen Day. \nElizabeth Elias Huffman\, director\, is the new artistic director of PICT Classic Theatre. She has been an artistic director for five companies in New York\, Los Angeles\, and Portland and has directed\, taught\, and acted in theatre internationally and regionally around the country. She works in film\, television\, and theater.  \nMatt Henderson (Andy Warhol)\, returns to PICT after appearing in their productions of The Old Curiosity Shop\, Romeo & Juliet\, and The Lion in Winter. His most recent roles were in Angels in America with Elsewhere Theatre Company and in Witness for The Prosecution at Prime Stage. He has appeared in many theatre productions in Pittsburgh as well as film and TV. \nJohnny Patalano (Mario Bonino) made his Pittsburgh theater debut more than twenty years ago as Tony in Tony ‘N Tina’s Wedding in Station Square. SUMMARY:Sound Series: Hatis Noit with special guest Morgan Stewart
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Japanese vocal performer\, Hatis Noit\, hailing from Shiretoko in Hokkaido who now resides in London. Hatis Noit’s accomplished range is astonishingly self-taught\, inspired by everything she could find from Gagaku—Japanese classical music—and operatic styles\, Bulgarian and Gregorian chanting\, to avant-garde and pop vocalists. The name Hatis Noit itself is taken from Japanese folklore\, meaning the stem of the lotus flower. She has recently appeared at various festivals across Europe including David Lynch’s Manchester International Festival takeover. NPR had this to say about her debut full-length album Aura (2022): “Aura is a bold\, impressive debut which signals—loud\, clear and creatively—that when Hatis Noit opens her throat to sing\, we should be listening”. Pittsburgh-based ambient\, experimental musician\, Morgan Stewart opens the evening. Stewart draws on a wide array of influences and synthesizes them into a form that is uniquely hers\, manipulating traditional song structures to deliver an environment that is at once familiar and revelatory. This set will see a deconstruction of previous work to create wholly new arrangements by building layers of texture of voice and sound. \n\nDoors open at 7 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Our Sound Series is pleased to partner with Government Center\, neighborhood record store\, cafe and music venue on the North Side\, on a monthly summer series focused on local and regional musicians and bands. These outdoor performances will take place in the recently renovated Silver Street (alley adjacent to the museum) as an intimate outdoor venue under the stars.  \nWe welcome Jordan Montgomery\, acclaimed Pittsburgh-based rapper and entrepreneur who released his debut album Driving While Black in 2016 and started the label of the same name later that year. We also welcome Lys Scott\, first generation Thai American artist and vocalist\, who recorded her album squashed dreams & broken wings during quarantine. DESCRIPTION:In connection with the exhibition\, The Velvet Underground & Nico: Scepter Studio Sessions\, we welcome Velvet Underground biographer Richie Unterberger\, who will discuss the recording of the band’s classic first album\, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). With audio and video clips\, as well as pictures from the period\, the presentation will focus on their April 1966 sessions at New York’s Scepter Studio\, mixed-down master tapes of which were recently discovered by The Warhol. Unterberger will highlight the birth of classics from their debut album like “Venus in Furs”\, “I’ll Be Your Mirror”\, and “All Tomorrow’s Parties”. \nRichie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books\, including White Light/White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day-By-Day. He’s currently researching his next book\, the full-length biography Do What You Fear Most: The History of the Velvet Underground\, which will be published by Omnibus Press in 2025\, and include information that’s come to light since the publication of his previous book on the band. He teaches rock history courses at several colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area\, including the University of San Francisco and the University of California at Berkeley. DESCRIPTION:We welcome back musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green\, for a unique evening featuring a special solo acoustic survey set of Moldy Peaches and Adam Green songs in our theater. The intimate performance will be preceded by a screening of his latest animated film MDVL: 1\,000 Years of Dark Ages\, written\, illustrated\, and narrated by Green and directed by animator Tom Bayne. The approximately 45-minute film\, a surrealist epic poem\, is about AI\, corporate communism\, the hard drive of the universe\, the phreaker wizard merlin\, a plant orgy\, mandatory corneal implants\, a crusade to Silicon Valley\, and the future world becoming medieval again. Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \nThe screening and performance will be followed by a Q & A with the filmmakers. \n\nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language.\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

Community members host screenings and discussions of tapes that they had a hand in creating. Pushing back against the tendency to consume archives\, MS 89 packs together to watch and rewatch as a ritual in creating new intergenerational friendships via their shared desire for a shared past. \nThis event is made possible by a generous gift from the Dietrich Humanities Scholars Program\, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry\, and The Andy Warhol Museum. \nAbout Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame \nThe Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant was created by Raina Lampkins-Fielder (former education program coordinator) and Glenn Brown (NYC Ball Scene). With a star studded line-up of contestants and judges from Pittsburgh’s queer nightlife\, Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame tells a lesser known story of cultural meaning making spanning performers\, museum curators\, and after-dark personalities from the Steel City. The documentary footage was captured and edited by filmmaker Roberta Kenney with editing support from filmmaker Chris Ivey\, and produced in the editing bays of the former Pittsburgh Filmmakers. As a result of interviews with members of the House of D’Opulence\, Apple and Kenney connected to reintroduce this footage by donating her source tapes to the Pittsburgh Queer History Project in 2021. \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public conversation featuring artists Carlos Mare and Michael Walsh and moderated by Chris McGinnis\, director and chief curator of Rivers of Steel Arts. Mare and Walsh are artists-in-residence at Rivers of Steel Arts in a week-long residency and workshop that explores the intersectionality of graffiti and metal arts. The residency’s scope also considers the connections with residents of the adjacent Monongahela Valley communities—communities whose character has been shaped by both their industrial and post-industrial heritage. In this artist talk\, Mare and Walsh\, two pioneers of the graffiti sculpture movement\, will share their experiences in the residency and reflect on the national graffiti sculpture movement and history. \n\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m.\nMasking is optional for this performance.\n\n

SUMMARY:Warhol\, Club Culture\, and the Black Celebrity Image
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Andy Warhol’s Social Network: ‘Interview\,’ Television and Portraits\, join us for a panel conversation moderated by author\, music historian\, and DJ Adrian Loving\, featuring legendary New York artist and filmmaker Fab 5 Freddy\, and Rory Trifon\, president of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. In this conversation the panel discusses Warhol’s participation in club culture beginning in the late 1970s and his representation of Black celebrities ranging from Grace Jones and Aretha Franklin to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The panel unpacks Warhol’s social ties\, his engagement with Black music culture\, and interest in exclusive entertainment circles throughout the 1980s. \nAdrian Loving\nAdrian Loving is a visual arts educator at Georgetown Day HS in Washington\, D.C.\, cultural historian\, and DJ – curating public programming\, exhibitions and performing internationally. His 2021 book Fade to Grey: Androgyny\, Style and Art in 80s Dance Music focuses on the intersection of art\, gender and dance music. Loving will appear in the forthcoming PBS documentary Making Black America in Fall 2022. \nFab 5 Freddy\nFred Brathwaite\, aka Fab 5 Freddy emerged in the late 1970’s as a New York City graffiti artist who was one of the first to exhibit his paintings internationally. Along with friends and contemporaries\, Futura 2000\, Keith Haring\, Lee Quiñones and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Fab was a key player in New York’s 1980’s downtown cultural scene instrumental in elevating graffiti into a disruptive movement that would eventually give birth to street art. In addition to his visual art\, Fab co-produced\, starred in and composed the music for the cult classic film\, Wild Style and went on to direct music videos for numerous hip hop stars. From the late 1980’s into the mid-90’s he was the original host of YO! MTV Raps\, the groundbreaking TV show that took hip hop culture global. Today he continues to make and exhibit his visual art and produce and direct projects for film and television. \nRory Trifon\nRory Trifon is the nephew of Richard Bernstein and President of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. The Estate of Richard Bernstein is the heir to the legal rights and interests of the Artist; the mission of which is to honor him by maintaining and enhancing his legacy and to make his art more accessible to audiences throughout the world. Trifon formally created the estate in 2016. He has since produced the book Richard Bernstein Starmaker: Andy Warhol’s Cover Artist (Rizzoli\, 2018) and led the Estate’s business relations with museums\, galleries\, publishers\, and licensing operations with brands such as Coach\, Loewe\, Henzel Studio\, and Flavorpaper.
