DESCRIPTION:Our Sound Series is pleased to partner with Government Center\, neighborhood record store\, cafe and music venue on the North Side\, on a monthly summer series focused on local and regional musicians and bands. These outdoor performances will take place in the recently renovated Silver Street (alley adjacent to the museum) as an intimate outdoor venue under the stars.  \nWe welcome Jordan Montgomery\, acclaimed Pittsburgh-based rapper and entrepreneur who released his debut album Driving While Black in 2016 and started the label of the same name later that year. He has collaborated and shared stages with an accomplished array of artists including Rakim\, Beanie Sigel\, and Freeway. We also welcome Lys Scott\, first generation Thai American artist and vocalist\, who recorded her album squashed dreams & broken wings during quarantine. SUMMARY:Richie Unterberger: The Velvet Underground & Nico
DESCRIPTION:In connection with the exhibition\, The Velvet Underground & Nico: Scepter Studio Sessions\, we welcome Velvet Underground biographer Richie Unterberger\, who will discuss the recording of the band’s classic first album\, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). With audio and video clips\, as well as pictures from the period\, the presentation will focus on their April 1966 sessions at New York’s Scepter Studio\, mixed-down master tapes of which were recently discovered by The Warhol. Unterberger will highlight the birth of classics from their debut album like “Venus in Furs”\, “I’ll Be Your Mirror”\, and “All Tomorrow’s Parties”. \nRichie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books\, including White Light/White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day-By-Day. He’s currently researching his next book\, the full-length biography Do What You Fear Most: The History of the Velvet Underground\, which will be published by Omnibus Press in 2025\, and include information that’s come to light since the publication of his previous book on the band. He teaches rock history courses at several colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area\, including the University of San Francisco and the University of California at Berkeley. His most recent book\, published by Taschen in 2022\, is San Francisco: Portrait of a City. \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome back musician\, artist\, and filmmaker\, Adam Green\, for a unique evening featuring a special solo acoustic survey set of Moldy Peaches and Adam Green songs in our theater. The intimate performance will be preceded by a screening of his latest animated film MDVL: 1\,000 Years of Dark Ages\, written\, illustrated\, and narrated by Green and directed by animator Tom Bayne. The approximately 45-minute film\, a surrealist epic poem\, is about AI\, corporate communism\, the hard drive of the universe\, the phreaker wizard merlin\, a plant orgy\, mandatory corneal implants\, a crusade to Silicon Valley\, and the future world becoming medieval again. Green is perhaps most known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches (along with Kimya Dawson) who provided the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning film Juno (2007). \nThe screening and performance will be followed by a Q & A with the filmmakers. \n\nPlease note this performance contains adult subject matter and strong language.\nDoors open at 7 p.m.

Join us for a once in a life-time community nightclub archives event\, taking place in The Warhol theater\, where the pageant played out almost 30 years ago. \nThe MS 89 series is a live and in-person only nightclub archives screening event. Community members host screenings and discussions of tapes that they had a hand in creating. Pushing back against the tendency to consume archives\, MS 89 packs together to watch and rewatch as a ritual in creating new intergenerational friendships via their shared desire for a shared past. \nThis event is made possible by a generous gift from the Dietrich Humanities Scholars Program\, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry\, and The Andy Warhol Museum. \nAbout Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame \nThe Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pageant was created by Raina Lampkins-Fielder (former education program coordinator) and Glenn Brown (NYC Ball Scene). With a star studded line-up of contestants and judges from Pittsburgh’s queer nightlife\, Miss Fifteen Minutes of Fame tells a lesser known story of cultural meaning making spanning performers\, museum curators\, and after-dark personalities from the Steel City. The documentary footage was captured and edited by filmmaker Roberta Kenney with editing support from filmmaker Chris Ivey\, and produced in the editing bays of the former Pittsburgh Filmmakers. As a result of interviews with members of the House of D’Opulence\, Apple and Kenney connected to reintroduce this footage by donating her source tapes to the Pittsburgh Queer History Project in 2021. \n\nDoors open at 6 p.m.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Andy Warhol’s Social Network: ‘Interview\,’ Television and Portraits\, join us for a panel conversation moderated by author\, music historian\, and DJ Adrian Loving\, featuring legendary New York artist and filmmaker Fab 5 Freddy\, and Rory Trifon\, president of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. In this conversation the panel discusses Warhol’s participation in club culture beginning in the late 1970s and his representation of Black celebrities ranging from Grace Jones and Aretha Franklin to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The panel unpacks Warhol’s social ties\, his engagement with Black music culture\, and interest in exclusive entertainment circles throughout the 1980s. \nAdrian Loving\nAdrian Loving is a visual arts educator at Georgetown Day HS in Washington\, D.C.\, cultural historian\, and DJ – curating public programming\, exhibitions and performing internationally. His 2021 book Fade to Grey: Androgyny\, Style and Art in 80s Dance Music focuses on the intersection of art\, gender and dance music. Loving will appear in the forthcoming PBS documentary Making Black America in Fall 2022. \nFab 5 Freddy\nFred Brathwaite\, aka Fab 5 Freddy emerged in the late 1970’s as a New York City graffiti artist who was one of the first to exhibit his paintings internationally. Along with friends and contemporaries\, Futura 2000\, Keith Haring\, Lee Quiñones and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Fab was a key player in New York’s 1980’s downtown cultural scene instrumental in elevating graffiti into a disruptive movement that would eventually give birth to street art. In addition to his visual art\, Fab co-produced\, starred in and composed the music for the cult classic film\, Wild Style and went on to direct music videos for numerous hip hop stars. From the late 1980’s into the mid-90’s he was the original host of YO! MTV Raps\, the groundbreaking TV show that took hip hop culture global. Today he continues to make and exhibit his visual art and produce and direct projects for film and television. \nRory Trifon\nRory Trifon is the nephew of Richard Bernstein and President of The Estate of Richard Bernstein. The Estate of Richard Bernstein is the heir to the legal rights and interests of the Artist; the mission of which is to honor him by maintaining and enhancing his legacy and to make his art more accessible to audiences throughout the world. Trifon formally created the estate in 2016. He has since produced the book Richard Bernstein Starmaker: Andy Warhol’s Cover Artist (Rizzoli\, 2018) and led the Estate’s business relations with museums\, galleries\, publishers\, and licensing operations with brands such as Coach\, Loewe\, Henzel Studio\, and Flavorpaper. They have collaborated with a wide array of artists including Rachel’s\, So Percussion\, Nico Muhly\, Alter Ego\, People Like Us\, Kronos Quartet\, and Bjork. They will return to our intimate theater on a tour supporting their latest album Regards​/​Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer via Thrill Jockey. Inspired by the Polish experimental composer Bogusław Schaeffer\, the album features contributions from harpist Úna Monaghan\, multi-instrumentalist Ulas Kurugullu\, electronic artist Will Schorre and Horse Lords’ Max Eilbach. DESCRIPTION:We welcome Japanese experimental sound artist\, FUJI||||||||||TA (pronounced Fujita) on his first U.S. tour. His unique practice utilizes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. In 2009\, Fujita hand fabricated a pipe organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Designed to create a soundscape rather than function as a more traditional musical instrument\, he has added a water element\, with sound synthesized water tanks. The music blends water sounds from multiple aquariums alongside his pipe organ and voice. Since 2006 he has had many solo performances and collaborative works with musicians\, including ∈Ｙ ∋ (Boredoms)\, Akio Suzuki\, Keiji Haino and Koichi Makigami. SUMMARY:Adil Mansoor: Amm(i)gone with Operation Sappho DJ’s
DESCRIPTION:Amm(i)gone\, an adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone\, is an apology to and from a mother. Creator and performer Adil Mansoor explores queerness\, the afterlife\, and obligation using canonical texts\, teachings from the Quran\, and audio conversations between him and his mother. Since discovering his queerness\, Mansoor’s mother has turned towards her faith in an attempt to save her son in the afterlife. In an effort towards healing\, Mansoor has invited his mother to join him as dramaturg and co-conspirator. In reading\, discussing\, and translating various adaptations of the source play\, together they mine Greek tragedy\, Islamic traditions\, and their own memories to create an original performance locating love across faith. Can prayer substantiate care? Can care manifest as artistic methodology and inquiry? Can Mansoor and his mother contend with Antigone’s fate? DESCRIPTION:We welcome singer\, composer-producer\, performance artist\, and model\, Lyra Pramuk\, on tour supporting her latest album Fountain on the Icelandic label\, Bedroom Community. Pramuk\, who grew up singing in choirs in a rural central Pennsylvania town\, went on to study at Eastman School of Music\, and is currently based in Berlin. Her interests lie primarily at the intersection of electronic pop music and opera\, counting Björk\, Laurie Anderson\, Meredith Monk\, M.I.A\, and Missy Elliot as inspirations. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Paola Pivi and Justine Ludwig\, executive director of Creative Time\, for a conversation about their new publication Paola Pivi. The monograph\, edited by Ludwig\, is published by Phaidon in association with The Andy Warhol Museum; Anchorage Museum; The Bass\, Miami Beach; [mac] musée d’art contemporain de Marseille; and MAXXI Museo Nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo\, Rome. It features more than 250 images\, including previously unpublished work\, together with five newly commissioned essays giving insight and perspective on Pivi’s diverse body of work. This program is related to our exhibition\, Paola Pivi: I Want It All. \nFollowing the discussion there will be an opportunity to enjoy refreshments in our entrance space\, meet the artist and purchase the book. \nJustine Ludwig is a writer and curator who currently serves as the Executive Director of Creative Time. Over the last decade she has curated projects with many artists including Shilpa Gupta\, Nadia Kaabi-Linke\, Pedro Reyes\, Jill Magid\, Laercio Redondo\, Paola Pivi\, and Pia Camil. Ludwig’s research interests include the intersections of aesthetics and architecture\, violence\, economics\, and globalization. DESCRIPTION:We welcome the Montreal-based French quintet\, Corridor\, and the New York-based dark\, synth-pop duo\, Tempers. With infectious rhythms\, dense and layered guitars and vocals sung in French\, Corridor blends pop hooks with angular post-punk sensibilities. They released their third album\, Junior\, on Sub Pop in 2019.
