behind the scenesThe Warhol: Rehang

Rendering of our new 6th Floor

A museum-wide gallery redesign commenced on January 20 and will continue through early May, culminating with our 20th Anniversary celebration beginning on May 17.  When the museum opened its doors in May 1994, galleries on each floor were arranged chronologically beginning with Warhol’s earliest works on the 6th floor to his late works from the mid-1980s on the 2nd floor.  Temporary exhibits were limited to the 7th floor.  Through the last several years as the collection expanded and number of in-house exhibitions grew, assorted installations and projects in our galleries altered the original flow.

Our work on this reinstallation is to re-introduce a proper chronology of Warhol’s life and career, beginning with Warhola family photos from 1930s Pittsburgh alongside Warhol’s earliest paintings and drawings on the 7th floor, a full-scale recreation of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable on the 6th floor, a dedicated film and video gallery on our 4th floor with viewing stations where scores of Warhol films and TV episodes can be selected by the visitor, and a re-opening of our Archives Study Center.  We are very excited about the changes coming to The Warhol and hope to raise the bar for The Warhol experience that Pittsburghers and visitors from around the world have come to expect.
