Past Event Sound Series: Low

CAL_20110216_low_main

The Warhol welcomes the “slowcore” band, Low, from Duluth, MN, for a unique evening featuring two performances in the intimate Warhol Theater. Emerging in 1993 as a distinctly minimalist, hushed and hypnotic alternative to the predominant “grunge” sound of the time, the initial trio featured the husband-and-wife team of guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk and drummer/vocalist Mimi Parker along with bassist John Nichols. Shimmy Disc producer Kramer, who had produced albums by Galaxie 500 and Jon Spencer, recorded some of their first demos and is credited with helping to shape their quiet, sparse yet expansive sound. Fast-forward 18 years and many albums later to their upcoming release, C’mon, on Sub Pop Records, which features all new material recorded in a former Catholic church (aka Sacred Heart Studio) in Duluth.
