Recurring Event Teacher Workshop: Symbols and Narrative

Participants in this workshop tour Dominican-born artist Firelei Báez’s intricate paintings and large-scale drawings on paper exploring black culture, Afro-Caribbean folklore, and the complexities of diasporic experiences in Bloodlines. Learn various printmaking methods that can be used in the classroom to create portraits in Báez’s style, using patterning, texture, and symbolism to tell a story. Tickets include museum admission, materials, and a private tour of Firelei Báez: Bloodlines.

Teachers in attendance may receive Act 48 credit hours and information about school partnership opportunities.

Firelei Báez: Bloodlines

February 17 – May 21, 2017

In this bust portrait of a woman with dark skin she sits in profile with her head turned 45 degrees to look directly at the viewer. She has dark brown eyes and wears an elaborate headdress that fills the top half of the vertical portrait. The headdress is a variety of whites, beiges, browns, and a bit of blue where the fabric folds creating shadows. It includes a variety of decorative patterns, and one of the patterns includes black panthers.
